I remember the 'beheading' thing about the birthdays but I also remember that the main reason given in our hall for 0 holiday fun was that jesus only wanted us to celebrate the memorial of his death. All the other reasons were almost like an afterthought. I also remember as a teenager becoming fascinated with the origin of wedding customs and telling my mom of the pagan origins of the wedding ring, veil, bridemaids etc. Her response was that it was ok for witness to follow these customs as they had stopped (?) being pagan and were now socially accepted by all members of society who weren't following them because they were pagan. Never mind the fact that holidays are celebrated in modern times for non pagan reasons exactly like the wedding ceremony.!!!!!!!!

Birthdays
by 9thWonder ini have been df'd for over 3 years (for the third time... you know it's the charm).
i have an 8 year old who is being taught by my parents the same things that i was taught, including how we can't celebrate birthdays.
i have been doing a little research on the origin of worldly customs, such as weddings and birthdays only to find that there are many wedding customs that witnesses have adopted that have pegan origins.

Is College now wrong for Jehovah's Witnesses again?
by booker-t ini have been out of the jw's for many years now but i still have devout jw's family members.
and i am attending college now at 40 yrs old working on my ba degree.
i was so happy a few years ago when my jw mom told me that the wt is slacking off on telling jw's teenagers that college is bad and it is ok to attend college and universities.

My parent's assembly was in mid June, I think. When she called me last week it was to tell me that my brother was going back to university to finish up his degree. He had done a full time work co-op program after completing his first two years of the program. My parents encouraged him to go to school as they didn't want to have him struggle thru life like they did. As far as I know there has been no problems with the elders in the hall.
Crossing my fingers he doesn't run into problems and finishes his degree.

JW view on therapy?
by damselfly ini'll start by saying a big hello!
to everyone on the board, i wish i had known about it when i was still a teenager in the religion.
what i am curious about is the jw view on people getting therapy for mental/emotional disorders.

Oh my! I didn't think so many people would reply. I had never given any thought that the therapist may have been unethical. I can't comment on what may have happened in the elder's wife's sessions, but for myself I didn't stick with it to find out. She may have wanted to discuss the JW's and was waiting for the right moment? She seemed to be a very nice and understanding person, but I wasn't ready to talk at the time.
Thanks for the replies.......Big wave to Talesin!!!!! East coast born and raised!

I know that if an elder's wife hadn't been in therapy then I wouldn't have been either. But if an elder says it's ok it must be right? I only went to 2 or 3 sessions and then quit, I knew my problems were as a result of the religion and how they had handled various situations in my life so to be forbidden to discuss the JW's seemed counter productive.

I'll start by saying a big Hello! to everyone on the board, I wish I had known about it when I was still a teenager in the religion.
What I am curious about is the JW view on people getting therapy for mental/emotional disorders. In my old hall my parents were told that getting therapy for me would be ok IF the elders gave the therapist the OK! So I ended up going to see this one elder's wife's therapist ( who was "approved" because this elder saw the therapist before the wife met her and the therapist had been instructed to NOT talk about the religion in any way, shape or form and to focus only on the "problem".) I am rolling my eyes as I type that. This was about 10 years ago.
So does anyone have any idea if there is an official stand on therapy or not?T
Thanks!

Small children are by nature more attuned to the energy fields and the "spirit" world around them but tend to lose this ability as they mature ( alot of it is the reactions they get from sharing this information with the adults in their lives).
Also the line between real and make believe is still blurry for the under ten set. As a child and (still as an adult) I saw/see and heard/hear voices/images etc. And I must say I consider myself fairly normal

I would have been able to join the track team.
I could have gone to high school and been able to emotionly mature with my peers and have an eduacational background instead of trying to teach myself thru home schooling.
I would have a family that speaks to me when they see me out shopping.
But I am very happy with the life I have now. I have a great career that I love, I'm studying the most fascinating courses with people I love. I have a wonderful partner who loves me because I'm weird and different, and his family has " adopted" me as one of them. Life is good overall.

Jehovah's Witness! Nothing but a period in the world novel.
by free2beme inoften, more so then not, my former witness friends have the habit of wondering why more people do not hear or know about things witnesses do in modern history.
yet in time, from being on boards like this one and from knowing far more people that are not witnesses, then ones that are or were.
the crazy acts of the early 1900's that gained public attention, were replaced with a more invisable conformed organization that really does very little to be noticed.

I tend not to reveal that I used to be a Witness, as I learned that I would find myself 20 minutes later trying to explain to this poor "wordly" person what they believe and don't believe. The only information they knew was the "no holidays of any kind" sort accompanied by the poor cute boys who had made the mistake of falling for a witness girl and had the hearts crushed by the girl's family. Great job of spreading Christian love there.

Could the Spirit world have helped your exit from the religion?
by free2beme inboy, this might be that can of worms i meant to keep closed!.
i was thinking about something though and wondered what your thoughts might be.
if you believe in angels, the spirit realm, spirit guides or spirits of loved ones that have crossed.

It was definitly " man " that prompted my leaving but it has been the " spirit " world that has confirmed in my darkest moments that my decision to stay away was the only option to preserve my mental health and to continue my growth into a healthy, functional adult of any kind.

OH my god it's moving all by itself!!
by hamsterbait ini have just discovered that i can move the cursor on my screen by moving the fingertips of my left hand about one centimeter above my laptop sensor pad.
i don't think it's demunzz, but maybe the electrical field of my body interacting in some way.. if any part of my body is touching the computer it doesn't happen.
i can also make my face tingle when i hold my right hand over my head about five inches above where my soft spot was as a baby.. i often get electrical shocks from the fittings in department stores.. any theories - has anyone else found this??.

It means that your body is a great conductor of energy and that you are able to sense and change/influence the energy fields around you. In my line of work and current field of study this is a very desirable thing. Have you considered studying bodywork of some sort? You could have amazing results!
