  JW and Hurricane Katrina

  her only comment was, "this is nothing compared to what armaggedon is going to be like.

  My husband spoke to my mother-in-law (a die-hard JW) after the horrors of Katrina started to unfold. Her ONLY comment was, "This is nothing compared to what Armaggedon is going to be like. Wait, you'll see". That was it. No expressed sympathy for the victims. No shock over the loss and human suffering. No mention of what we, as a society, can do to help the victims. I was disgusted to hear that the only comment from a "Christian" woman had nothing whatsoever to do with at least wishing she could help the victims, or send a prayer. Also, three days after Katrina, about a DOZEN JWs worked my neighborhood in full force. I've never seen so many JWs out in field service. As they knocked on my door, I peeked out the window and counted heads. I couldn't believe it. At first I thought that they came to do a follow-up call that my husband inadvertently started with another JW. However, I then saw all 12 JWs go to every home in my neighborhood. It seems that JWs might be using Katrina to gather steam for their pioneering. Anyway, my interest is in this: What in the world are the JWs going to do for the victims of Katrina besides preach? Moments after the storm passed their were several religious organizations that saturated the affected areas to give food and water (Southern Baptists, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, Episcopal, and others). These religious orgs. were distributing food and water days before our own government did !! I read an article that explained that these orgs. were assisting ANYONE that they could whenever they could. No preaching. No religious selection. Just giving out the necessities to those in need. If the JWs are not responding in the same way, I would like to use that fact either with my mother-in-law or other JWs when they tell me how loving their org. is. But, I don't want to be wrong with my facts. If anyone knows of any relief efforts by the JWs to help ANYONE, regardless of the victim's religion, please let me know. I don't want to put my foot in my mouth. Thanks.

  BTW: Hats off to all the organizations, especially the Red Cross, for their humanitarian efforts. Perhaps they can train our government in how to respond to a crisis. Please consider a donation to one of them.

  Thanks everyone for your advice and insight. I guess being nice to this JW hasn't paid off. If he comes knocking again, I'll politely tell him that we aren't interested. If he persists, then I'll have to let him know that I believe he is a lunatic whose mental illness rivals his physical illness. I pride myself on being a respectful person, so I hope it doesn't come down to me having to insult this guy. This board is great and I am glad I found it.

  Steve2, thanks, but the issue is that my husband is really the one that was talking to the guy. I never, ever, ever talk to the guy. When he was literally "knocking" I would refuse to open the door and talk to him if I was home alone. However, if my husband was home, he would often open the door. My husband says he "feels bad" leaving the guy on the doorstep knocking. So, hubby use to be the poor soul that got stuck talking to the JW, not me. I'd run into my office for safety and shut the door. If I took your advice Steve2 (which is good advice), I would end up telling a guy that has never spoken a word to me personally to "bug off". I suppose I could do that. I just wish my husband was a rude enough person to tell this JW to take his mags and leave our house alone. What a friggin annoyance. Don't JWs realize that people work hard all week and just want to relax in their pajamas on Saturday mornings? Thankfully, this guy doesn't physically knock anymore and just leaves those magazines. But, when he use to knock, man, oh man....he would knock early in the morning on a Saturday before I even had my first cup of coffee. Do these people have any sense or courtesy at all?

  By the way, outside of my house I fly the American flag at ALL TIMES and I currently have a political sign for an upcoming election outside of my house. Doesn't this tell this JW guy that our views and his views are worlds apart?

  This guy has already left handwritten notes !! LOL. He writes on little pieces of scrap paper, "Dear XXXXX, I stopped by today to see how you were doing. I am having a harder time walking as days go by. I might need to go into the hospital. I have left you a copy of some material ("What Does The Bible Really Say?") and I have underlined some things that I would like for you to read. You will see where we are in this system of things and how close we are to the end. I will come by next Saturday if I am not hospitalized" That is the last note he left. So, it is funny that you mentioned that I should expect him to start leaving notes.

  Ok, so the dinasours, according to JW material, were extinct before the flood. That makes more sense than Noah trying to squeeze a T-Rex into the Arc. But, I thought the bible said that God created man....then he created animals. I am sorry that I can't quote Genisis, and I may even be wrong with the steps to creation. If so, someone please correct me. If I am correct, then how can the Dinasours (animals) be in existence after man and before the flood without whatever killed the Dinasaurs before the Flood killing man too? If Dinasaurs existed prior to man, doesn't that make the Bible wrong? Am I confused or is there something illogical here? I am no Bible expert so throw whatever criticism you can muster up.

  Well, if this JWs heart really isn't in it and he is feeling pressured to go door knocking, I feel horrible for him. He is clearly physically disabled as he walks with cane. He is a fairly young guy who ought to be enjoying life. He appears to have great difficulty with both legs and his hips that is getting progressively worse by the week. I am guessing he might have MS or some degenerative disease. He talked to my husband about all his "pain meds" before, but never mentioned what his medical problem was. Another question: why wouldn't the JWs that hang around with this guy be the ones to walk up our steps considering this guy has such a hard time walking? He is always with a few JWs that wait in the car while he struggles to get up the stairs. Not all disabled people want help and I understand that allowing them to be independant brings dignity to them. However, I was wondering if there was also some JW rule that the one who "finds" the house must also be the one who keeps walking up the stairs.

  Thanks everyone for such quick responses. So, I guess JWs would just talk themselves around the Dinasaur issue huh? Another question: If Dinasaurs where here before and/or at the time of the Great Flood, then why didn't Noah bring them on his arc? Of course, the Dinos wouldn't fit on the arc, but what would the JW explaination be? Didn't God say to Noah: take "all" living things on the arc?

  My husband and I are not JW's. My husband sympathizes with the religion because his entire family is "in". As a result, he has come to know a local JW (non-relative). This JW does not know my in-laws because they live in different towns. For a few months, this JW would knock on our door every Saturday and try to make small talk about the religion with my husband. My husband was curtious, but always blew him off. All the "talks" were limited to our front porch because my husband was afraid to invite the guy inside. Anyway, for the past few weeks, this JW has been leaving the magazines and books in our door without knocking or attempting to "talk". Often, we are home and see the guy drop the mags and take off with his JW group. What is going on? I am GLAD AS HELL that this guy is no longer bugging us by knocking, but at the same time...I am curious. What is the point of leaving mags and running? I think my husband made it clear that he does not want a bible study. I don't understand this religion. By the way, this guy keeps underlining warnings of "the end" in certain publications. Why try to scare the crap out of people? Not that I believe any of this stuff. I just can't understand what this guy's point is. I am ready to hang a sign on my door that says, "Stop leaving what amounts to death threats in my screen door, you nutcase". I am trying so hard to be nice.

  JWs and 9/11

  Hi. I am new here. I am not a JW and neither is anyone in my family. However, I married into a JW family. My husband was raised JW, but was never baptised. He has gone to the "hall" a handful of times in the past 15 years and he has attended the Memorial a couple of times in the past 15 years. He is very uncommitted to this religion, questions it constantly, and will never be baptised. Due to his raising, he is very sympathic when JWs come to our door and has developed a loose relationship with one of them (never studied together thanks to my hubby blowing them off all the time). My mother in-law is a 30 year pioneer and completely brainwashed. My two brother in-laws are both elders. Everyone else in hubby's family is either baptised, or a "believer" that hasn't gotten around to baptism yet, except for one relative that was DFed. Hubby's family is cordial to us, but they don't socialize with us wicked people. So, that is my background and this is my only interest in the religion. I was raised Catholic, although I do not practice or believe in it anymore.

  My question is this: What, if anything, did JW's contribute in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks? Thanks to hubby's JW sympathy, I have Watchtowers and Awakes stacked up in my house. I've read through some of them. Besides the typical "there is proof that the end is near", in reference to the type of death and destruction brought on 9/11, I didn't see anything that explained if JW's helped the victims in any way. I did read on the official JW website something about how the JW headquarters in Brooklyn was opened up to people in need of water and a phone on the day of the attacks, but was there any other help offered? To me, giving someone a cup of water or letting them use the phone immediately after they nearly burned to death inside the World Trade Center is not a huge contribution motivated by compassion. Instead, that sort of flimsy help is more of a quick reaction when there are dozens of people banging on the door for help. Even the most mean criminals have stories of how they did a small favor for someone in NY on 9/11. What I want to know is whether JWs were advised by their elders to get involved in organized assistance i.e Red Cross, etc. Did JW's contribute anything financially like so many other religious organizations did? Did JW's give 9/11 the attention it deserved besides writting it off as "proof of the end"? Please answer if you know.
