Is This Discrimination ?

yesterday, i received a notice of an arts grant available for people in urban areas.

in reading the materials it stated (and i'm going to bold the same words the application did): must be a person of color from african, asian, or hispanic heritage.

i was quite offended by this.

In reading the materials it stated (and i'm going to bold the same words the application did): Must be a person of Color from African, Asian, or Hispanic heritage. I was quite offended by this. To me it seemed like everyone can apply except caucasians. To me that feels like discrimination. Maybe someone understands something about this that I don't.

I know that if someone put out a grant for only people "not of color" (whatever that means) from European heritage there would be an outcry as there rightly should. I believe in equality and it must be enforced on all sides.

What are your thoughts?

I love it. It's funny. I can see how someone may take offense; however, if they did they have no sense of humor.

Pest Problems

so with the hot weather in so california, it's common to have ant problems.

well, last night i discovered a pest i never imagined.

Our infestation happened from about February through early May.

Well thanks for sending them my way. My ants arrived around the end of May and are still coming in.

Ah! So with the hot weather in So California, it's common to have ant problems. Well, last night I discovered a pest I never imagined. Around 7pm I heard a crash come from my kitchen. I ran over to inspect it and nothing seemed out of place. About 15 mins later, I heard another crash. I ran back and heard scratching coming from one of my cabinets. I thought, "oh jeez, rats". I started to make a plan when I heard something that sounded like wings flapping and come "cooing". It was a pigeon!!! There's a vent that goes through one of my cabinets and I guess it wasn't hooked up right and the pigeon fell from the roof into my kitchen cabinet.

I called the manager who sent over someone to help catch it. In the process it flew all over the place. It was so strange. What's the strangest pest you've had in your house?

This thread is just meant to start a flame war. This board has people with pretty strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. As a centrist there are things on both lists that I agree and don't agree with. BUT, knowing that the nature of this thread is to get people peeved, I will keep my comments to myself as I know they won't change anyone's mind.

i got rid of all my led zeppelin (satanic backtracking and all that baloney).

My mom was liberal in that sense and let me listen to whatever I wanted. However, I had a friend who's father was the P.O. and he had to play every album he bought for his father. It didn't stop him from buying "immoral" music though. He would just throw out the jewel cases and hide the CDs he knew his father wouldn't approve.

This heat

its finally cooled down, i can't believe how hot last week was and that were expecting even more of it.

i'm gonna melt!.

the uk has been hotter than most places, including greece, turkey, texas and other places.

It got up to 119F 44C over the weekend in "the valley" where I work. Thankfully I live a little closer to the ocean where it was only 90ish. My receptionist from Egypt says it doesn't even get that hot there.

They have had quite a few people without power for days now. Last night on the news they interviewed one home owner and she made the most horrific spoiled sounding comment. She said, "this is just like Katrina!" HAHAHA!!! How embarassing to say that on the news.

yesterday, my brother and his son were in town visiting.

me and the wife decided to go out and get some pizza to bring back for supper.. when we pulled up to the pizza shop, a guy came up to the car window and gave us his sob story about how he had cancer removed, how he refused to stay in the homeless shelter, and presented a stack of papers stapled together along with his mb health card.

he asked for any change that we may have.

A few stories.
The one time I got really peeved was when I was eating at an outdoor cafe in San Fran and someone just walked right up to our table and stuck their hand out. No words. Just a hand and a look. They had no problem walking over so obviously they can work.
I noticed a lot of teenagers and young adults begging in Montreal. That really annoyed me.
In Amsterdam, my friend got mugged twice by junkies. I was with him but always seems to not get bothered. Maybe he wasn't as aware of his surroundings as he should have been because he smoked too much.
There is a guy that works in my company's maintenance department that has been off and on homeless. It is mostly due to an addiction. It really bugs me. About two years ago he inheirited around $150k from a family member's death. It was gone in less than a year. HOLY CRAP! If I was in his position, I would use it to get on my feet and go to a nice treatment program. I feel some people just don't want help.
