Are There Any Worthy Non-Watchtower Charities?
by TMS injehovah's witnesses are subtly discouraged from contributing to any charities other that the watchtower society.
while acknowledging that groups other that the wt may do "some good", jw's may feel that charitable groups are generally dishonest, wasteful or simply not doing things "jehovah's way.".
now, as an ex-jw, have you found any charities worthy of your monetary support?

National Healthcare for the USA
by sammielee24 injust an fyi for anyone interested - there is a major drive on to push the bill forward for national healthcare in the usa.
you can sign the petition by going to http://www.onecarenow.org/.. it has gone through one part of the process last year and now the push is on to get it moved to the next level - it is backed by over 400 groups including the uaw i believe.
it is no longer if it happens, it is only a matter of time as to when it happens.

My proposal would be for an expansion of medicare (left under state control) so that it would cover the gap for those who can't afford private insurance but don't qualify for medicare as well as those who can not attain insurance because of existing conditions.
I'm going to be the "Ann Coulter" on this topic for saying: I personally would not want a nationalized system because being a single personI am already paying more than my share of taxes to provide services that I don't use. My heart doesn't really go out to the people with three kids that can't decide whether to eat or pay for health insurance. Perhaps they should have thought about that before they had three kids. It's all about lifestyle choices. Many people in the western world spend a lot of money on luxuries and call them necessities. So someone who can't afford health insurance for their kids probably has cable TV, a cell phone, and orders take away food a few times a month. Those little things add up.
Maybe Bush's dumb abstinence only sex-education courses should include a lesson on how much having just one child will cost you.

I love my HMO! (kaiser) They approved a $20k surgery for me that Blue Cross wouldn't cover as they say it's not necessary. At my age my premium is only $130/month (but that's paid for by work) and my co-pay is $20. It kicks @$$.
Dental from AFLAC is only $28/month and i haven't paid a dime yet to my dentist.
With the way people here in the US go to the doctor for every sniffle and headache, socialized medicine would bankrupt the country. -

Remember when KH's had a piano and real singing?
by WingCommander inthe thread about got me thinking about my very early childhood, back when witnesses were allowed to be social and have get togethers.
they also had a piano in every congregation i ever attended, and an older sister would always play the kingdom melody.
there was actual singing - not mindless droning and humming.

When my family moved to a new congregation around 1990, the new cong. had an upright and a little grandma organ (the ones that you could add a samba beat etc etc). There was a sister that would play the piano, but she was old and it didn't last long. Soon enough both of the instruments vanished.
I never understood why they had an organ. True organ music is made for an organ or harpsichord. Just like piano music can be played usually on piano or guitar (if there are chords). I had a long lecture on this by someone that was a professor of Baroque music. Or as I called it, broke music because you really can't make a living with a degree in it. HAHA!

I didn't realize you could privately fly so close to LAX. What was your altitude?
We were about 4,500 ft. In the parts we were flying, LAX space was above us so we were safe. Although, we had to watch out for Burbank boundaries as they take up a good chunk of the Valley and hills east of Van Nuys.

It must be nerve racking to do circuits in controlled airspace like you have over there.
It was interesting to hear "you can't go over there that belongs to Burbank and that over there belongs of Los Angeles". But, we did have a tiny GPS display that actually shows boundaries. We did have to have a look out the windows constantly to watch for other air traffic. I know that when I am able to rent, I want to rent a plane that displays other aircraft on screen. It's only $30 more a flight hour but it may be worth it for a trip to Palm Springs.
is it expensive
The estimated cost for your Private Pilot License (plane rental, instructor, books, test, medical, other stuff) is around $9,000. But, it's pay as you go so if it takes two years to train, it's ok. I have some $$ saved up and will finance just a little bit.
