Living
by joelbear inthere is only one law, love your neighbor as yourself.. very simple words that get buried under lots of gobbledegook.
we strain to rid ourselves of the guilt of the shoulds that were cast upon us throughout our life.. we run our lives based on these shoulds and apply these shoulds to others.. there are two parts to the law.
love your neighbor gets most of the attention.

money will destroy us all
by joelbear init takes the place of natural resources.
it allows natural resources to be allocated lopsidedly.
it is destroying more and more of the natural world every day.

money does nothing in itself. recall the proverb, "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." besides, if it wasn't for the invention of a common commodity, we'd all be walking around with the goods we produce looking for someone to trade a pair of shoes for all these potatoes i grew. i find that rather cumbersome.

Jehovah's Witnesses Are Awaiting Persecution!
by minimus inif jws "suffer" persecution it will make them feel as if they are fulfilling bible prophecy.
they like thinking and believing that they are chosen to be abused and persecuted.
if any political upheavals occur, they look at it as a sign to say that the end is near.

the religious persecution complex has been well analyzed by nietzsche. according to him, viewing one's group as persecuted draws the herds together in their resentment. it provides weak people with an outlet for their will to power. persecution gives meaning to a christian life: it's a cut that gives a christian reason to live. the absence of suffering is an absence of a reason for the christian to live.

fallacies are a rather controversial notion in the field of argumentation. they have their roots back aristotle's 'sophistic refutations'. but, generally, in our time, academics agree that fallacies are mistakes in reasoning, which occur with some frequency in real arguments and which are characteristically deceptive (Govier, 1995).
the best thing i've ever seen written on argumentation and the WTBS is a chapter called "Argumentation & Manipulation" in ray franz's book "In Search of Christian Freedom".
a more controversial analysis of christian reasoning as a whole can be found in nietzsche's Geneology of Morals. there, he focuses on the psychological motivation behind the way Christians go about justifying their beliefs. -

Curious as to what a wedding at the KH is like...
by Riverwatcher ini don't know why this has popped into my head.
just wondering about j/w weddings.. is there music?
are there any traditions used in the ceremony?
-

as others have said, a JW wedding at a KH is exactly like any other boring meeting....same people in the same suits, same music, same old elder giving the same old talk....except you don't have to worry about preparing a watchtower study! boooooring!

Orwell, 1984, and the Watchtower
by RichieRich inso my english class just got handed (yesterday) 1984, by george orwell.
its a book i've been wanting to read for a long time, but haven't been able to (i read non stop for english class).. so i was really excited when i got the book.
from what i've heard about it, it seemed like it would be really pertinent for people in the watchtower.. all i can say is wow.

i remember reading 1984 in highschool and being struck by the similarities between the novel and the society. but, 1984 is really just a satire of england at the time it was written more than a social commentary on stalin's rule. (i recommend reading 1985 by Anthony Burgess for the only good analysis ever written on Orwell's book.) i come from the same small town as Gary Botting and did my undergrad at the same university as he. i have a little story about the first time i heard of Gary.... i was working part-time for a very nice elder in my congo doing some cleaning work. we were having lunch one day and he asked what i planned on doing with my education. i told him that i would like to continue on to grad school. he replied, "i only know one witness who ever became a professor....and now he's an apostate. he wrote a book called The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses. his name is Gary Botting. we used to be friends back when he was a witness and went to school in town. he invited me to have a drink one day with some of his friends from the university at the campus pub. the whole evening these people were talking about evolution and other godless theories. you just couldn't reason with them-Gary fell in with a bad crowd." home-town apostate pride!

scarecrow is my father. seriously. hi there old man! i didn't find anything that others haven't already. franz's books, this website, and other sites supercede whatever i could share with you. but, i had to do my original research w/o those resources because (as a JW) i didn't want to taint my results with any so-called 'apostate' influence.

Another experience story about leaving the society
by enderby ini was raised a dub, though not born one.
my mother had told the woman her story about studying in the 70's and that she believed the dubs were on to something but just didn't really care.
what i need are some dub friends.

SERVICE REPORT 2005 : WATCHTOWER FEB 1ST 2006
by BluesBrother ini have had a quick look and found no references to this, so - here goes..as in the mag we picked up on sunday.. worldwide % increase over 2004 = 1.3%.
memorial partakers 8524 (compared to 8570 in 2004).
most european and nth american lands show pretty static figs - britain 1% increase, canada 0%, germany 0%, france 1%, usa 0%... but spare a thought for the inhabitants of zambia where 1 person in 90 is a reporting witness, must be hell going down to the local market!

numbers going down? hurray! the love of the greater number is cooling off as predicted and the end is near!
numbers going up? hurray! god is blessing the work of the great crowd as predicted!
how about a falsifiable thesis, brooklyn? haven't you read any Popper? oh yes, you have . . . you've quoted him before! err, i mean, you misleadingly quoted his views on the theory of evolution.
