  My oh my, the jws have a high opinion of themselves and their importance
  in the world at large, don't they? The watchtower is truly a legend in its' own
  mind! I fail to see how anyone can actually believe this crap:

  The modern-day locusts had a job to do. The Kingdom good news had to be preached. Errors had to be exposed. Lost sheep had to be found. As the locusts went about these tasks, the world was forced to sit up and take notice

  They obviously don't watch the news very much - about the only time they
  attract media attention is when they've done someting wrong, like when one
  of their flock has been brough to book for some crime like child abuse. They
  attract no attention whatsoever for their pointless and meaningless ministry,
  despite the "urgent message" they purport to be delivering to all mankind.
  
  The world, or most of it, didn't "sit up and take notice" of them then, and takes
  even less notice now. How they are able to delude themselves into believing that it
  does says a lot for the level of control that the wts hierachy is still able to exert
  over it's followers, because anyone capable of even a modicum of independent
  thought would be able to see this for the total bull$hit it truly is.

  will this arrogant, presumptuous organization that has ruined so many lives, that loves to talk about humility and modesty, ever present a formal apology to all those who've suffered at their hands?.

  would it really matter if they did?.

  They probably don't think they have done anything to apologise for.

  After all, they have helped their followers to live upstanding, moral lives, and avoid
  the traps that many of us worldly folk fall into, like drug abuse, smoking, alcoholism,
  marriage breakups, immoral sex, STD'S etc.

  At least, that's what they say........

  this topic has been talked about before but it is worth mentioning again.

  the revelation grand climax book is currently being studied ar the book studies world wide (4th time) usually on tuesday nights.

  at the book study the jws are force fed false doctrine by the wts evil slave class.

  It's supposed to have been, according to wts doctrine, to have been fulfilled by the
  7 conventions of jws held between 1922 and 1928

  The jws were studying the revelation book when I first joined, and I just accepted
  the teaching at the time, but thinking about it later, when I'd read the account in
  Revelation 8, it seemed to me that these trumpet blasts would be heard throughout
  the world. I doubt if everyone in the USA had heard of the jws, or bible students as
  they were then known, in the 1920's, so 7 insignificant conventions just didn't seem
  to fit the bill for fulfillment of such a prophecy for me. I doubt the "blasts" were heard
  in places like China, India, Russia etc somehow.

  Jehovah's Witnesses bizarre reaction to world events

  isnt it a bit strange how jw's react to the different things that go on in the world?.

  after 9/11 i heard a brother describe the death and carnage as 'tragic but exciting'.

  it seems to me that jw's have their heads so far up their own arseholes that they cant even react in a humane way when things happen in the world.

  After 9/11 I heard a brother describe the death and carnage as 'tragic but exciting'. Is it just me or is this a totally twisted way of looking at what happened in NY that day? Can you imagine hearing ANYONE else describing the loss of thousands of lives as 'exciting'?

  No one else but the jws would see the death of so many as "exciting", but they get very excited at the prospective death of 6 billion humans at armageddon, so what else can we expect from them when a major disaster occurs?

  I think some of them actually look forward to events like 9/11, and secretly wish for more of them. As you said, they love to talk about how these trgedies fit so neatly into their pet prophesies of the "sign" of the last days

  Hi nvr,

  I think you put this topic in the wrong category - it would be more suited to
  the jokes and humour section!

  I personally believe that those at the top of the wtbts know, and have known for
  years, that their supremely arrogant claim to be god's only channel of truth to be
  the bs we know it really is. The periodical doctrinal shifts they have to make,
  such as the generation change, which they put down to "new light", and which
  they somehow persuade the majority of jws to accept, are forced on them in
  order to protect them from the embarassment of having to explain yet another
  failed prophecy.

  I also believe that they have learned the lessons of history, in particular of the
  worldwide church of god. After the death of it's founder, Herbert Armstrong, that
  cult radically changed many of it's doctrines, became more mainstream, and
  lost many of it's members as a consequence. If the governing body did that, the
  consequences would likely be the same, so I don't really see them ever coming
  clean about any of the obviously-false doctrines they have promulgated.

  I guess they are so used to lying now, and getting away with their lies, that it's
  become a habit, maybe even an addiction for them. They probably couldn't tell
  the truth even if they wanted to.

  have you heard of that famous book the tipping point by malcolm gladwell?

  well i thought i would have a go at his more recent book called blink which is about subconscious split-second decisions.

  generally i would say it is an overrated if entertainingly written book.

  Hi slim,

  It could go some way towards explaining it. I guess none of us wants to acknowledge
  we have got our life choices wrong, especially when it's as drastic a change to our
  lifestyle as becoming a jw can be if, like me, we have no background in any religion.

  When I started my own independent research of the doctrines around 8 years ago,
  at the time I would have preferred to have been able to prove the watchtower right
  rather than admit I'd made such a monumental error in joining. I have wondered
  myself if the fear of being proved wrong, and having to admit it, is what keeps
  jws and members of other cults from really investigating their own particular beliefs.
  I suppose if you've spent your whole life as a jw, to find out that you have been part
  of a cult rather than the "one true religion" all these years would be a real bodyblow.

  my mom passed away yesterday.

  she was a die-hard jw.

  i tried to explain why i couldn't accept certain teachings but rather than rationally consider what i had to say she chose to believe i was just "confused".

  Just in case someone wanted to learn a little! None of us JWs look at him as a prophet

  But a lot of his followers did at the time he was making his prophecy that the rapture would occur in 1914, then 1915, then 1918....

  He was a prophet actually - a false prophet, like his successor J F Rutherford (millions now living will never die, written in 1920: armageddon will come in 1925, the scriptures say so etc)

  just as an admirable man to started to question the ridiculous dogma of the churches

  He challenged the "ridiculous dogma" of the churches, and came up with an even more ridiculous dogma of his own, which became even more ridiculous when Rutherford succeeded him, and is still ridiculous today
