i wrote the following comments in a response to joelbear's thread on the 4 steps to the new system.
but they were sort of off topic there, and i thought they might be of interest as a separate thread.
at one time, door to door work was highly effective.
Oooppps, my bad. It wasn't a 25 minute part it was a 10 minute part. The 25 minute part was about Pioneering, and giving up everything cool in your life so you can go gain more good little JW converts.

There were two exciting times for Saturday field service for me. 10:30 when we'd all pile into McDonalds for break; and 12:00 when we could finally go home. I remember when I got my first car at 16, my brother and I and our friends started forming our own car group to go work "not at homes" or some our own territory we'd checked out. Then we'd just go work about two doors and cruise around till break time. It was sweet.
One more thing, does anyone remember that awkward time at the Saturday field service meeting when Bro. Lame-oh would start dividing up car groups. It was like getting picked for baseball teams in school. Please pick me please pick me. I can remember a few times when they completely passed over my mother and us, like during a CO's visit when EVERYONE was out in service. Then the CO would ask if he'd missed someone. My mom would never raise her hand. She'd get so pissed we'd just drive to one of her RV's then go home. Best days of service ever!

It was under the thread dealing with this weeks Service Meeting. A 25 minute part dealing with how to handbill effectively. You probably know as well as I do, that the WTS does not devote 25 minutes to a topic on the Service Meeting unless they're getting serious about something. I sense a shift in direction, a return to methods employed 50 years ago. It wouldn't surprise me to see JW's on the street corners wearing placard signs.
hi, waiting, and all others concerned about this amicus brief:.
just to set the record straight - i have been a legal secretary for over 20 years, and i assure you there is nothing shady about the society filing an amicus brief in regard to this swaggart thing.
an amicus brief is filed in cases in which the verdict could set a precedent that would or could have an adverse affect on other parties not involved in the suit (i.e., other religious organizations, corporations, etc.).
I remember the moment when the society sent out that letter and changed to the donation arrangement. It was presented to us as an exciting new change. As if the Society was changing so that the publications would now be even easier to obtain for any who might be poor. There was never ANY mention in the congregation that the new arrangement was a result of the Swaggert law suit. Or that the new donation arrangement was not worldwide, but only in countries where the WTS was subject to taxation. In fact there are still JW's today who think the donation arrangement is worldwide.

Ummmm.....I like your belly shot picture.......and pass me a piece of chicken!
don't wait.
update your advance medical directives before you find yourself in my situation.... .
my left arm was feeling 'odd' last friday morning as i was getting dressed for work.
The previous posters were right about the HIPPA laws. The hospital is expressly forbidden from releasing ANY of your treatment info to any other third party inquiries. But beyond that any hospital staff, or sub-contractors that might have come across ANY information about you CANNOT under law reveal that information. I know that because I work in a hospital as a sub-contract electrician. Before I was allowed to step foot on hospital property I had to sign HIPPA compliance contracts, as does ANYBODY who works in a hospital in any capacity.
In other words if a JW nurse or doctor or whatever works at that hospital, the local elders cannot use them as some kind of "theocratic spy" to out you. Your treatment information, and any conversations you had with hospital staff are private information. If the elders find out you have the right to sue!
ok this is where i tell whats going on in my exciting life and all of you give me advice.
1)is a seashell necklace wrapped around a cowboy hat cool or what?
2)what stuff should i bring to the dorm?
I wouldn't even go to meetings. You'll probably be too busy studying and partying to even bother.
I think you're good on the things you're taking to your dorm room. You might bring a few straws for all the cocaine the chicks are gonna want you to snort off their titties (true story from my brother).
I would get over the whole suit hang up. If you really are going to go to meetings, you'd better wear one to keep up appearances. Besides if people make fun of you over wearing a suit, do you REALLY care? You in college now, that's so high school dude!
If you don't have time to get a part time job because you're gonna be studying, how are you going to have time to go to ALL the meetings and study? Your call dude, but I'd take the part time job and a little financial independance from mom and dad over wearing a suit and going to meetings anyday!
i never could clearly explain the "faithful slave's domestics", as the watchtower tries to.
i would quote the publications but i did not believe that the explanation was at all satisfactory......was there anything you just couldn't "get"?
1. How to identify the Faithful Slave. Merely quoting a scripture that asks "Who is the FDS?" proves nothing.
2. Why they teach 144,000 is literal. The WTS goes to great lengths to prove Revelations is FIGURATIVE. Then try to tell us that that one teeny little scripture about 144,000 is literal. Illogical.
3. Why the WTS sees fit to pull bits and pieces from 100 different places in scripture and construct a time prophecy pointing to 1914. If it was so important why didn't God just spell it out in plain Hebrew, or Greek?
4. Why people will willingly submit to WTS dogmatism, and allow their lives to be controlled throught threat of disfellowshipping over ORGANIZATIONAL not SCRIPTURAL issues. (I already know the answer to this one: there's a whole lot of stupid walking around out there!)
