any electricians out there?

my fiance and i are going to have a panel upgrade and all rewriring in our house.

the house is an old craftsman built some time in the 30s here in california.

Here's my humble two cents.

Demand a Square D panel.....Homeline minimum, but a QO is much better (will run more money).

All of your knob and tube wiring should be reconnected through GFI breakers.

Make sure your electrician provides the newly code-required Arc-Fault breakers for all bedroom circuits.

Your voltage will not be 100v, you probably meant 100 amps. A 100 amp panel is the minimum allowed under code (as opposed to the older 60 amp styles). The higher the ampacity of your service, the larger the feeder wire required and the more cost incurred.

I can't speak to the cost of work in California, it's much higher than other parts of the country. Are you only having your panel upgraded?

Remember, the lowest bid is not always the best option. Thoroughly research your contractor before you hire him. How many years has he been in business? Is he a member of any local business organizations? What type of insurance does he carry? Will the electrician performing your work be licensed?

Bethel Police pulled me over for a violation

wearing faded jeans only as a bethelite is a cause for concern for the governing body.

i had jeans that were not totally faded as the "world" would consider them.

so one freaken' weekend as i passed by a wt building, a tightwod bethel elder (now just an elder) asked me how i was doing (bla bla bla).

Maybe if the Governing Body (i.e. God) were paying you more for your services, you could afford newer jeans?

During a Watchtower Study, my father (the congregation service overseer), once commented that there wouldn't be so much depression in the congregation if everyone would just read their Watchtower's and Awake's like the Society said. I assume that in the "New System" tm, Watchtower and Awake reading will be mandatory, therefore depression will be all but obsolete. Gosh if everyone would just listen to what the Society says, we wouldn't have all these so-called problems!

I have always felt rather unsure of how to feel about this. On one hand, it's only right that if they're going to ask someone to help out repeatedly they should reimburse them. But this wasn't done with all the trades, only some. And it was kept very quiet, which made me feel that there was something shady going on.

Wow, paid to work on a QB. I've got no problem with a workmen being paid for his work, I am a union tradesman after all. But when you get paid, as well as recieve all the "spiritual credit" for "volunteering" at QB's? That's wrong.

I was actively involved in KH building throughout my high-school years. I probably went to 20-30 builds in that time. I loved them! I met my wife at one. It wasn't until I joined a trade union and began to study labor law, and OSHA safety regulations that I realized what a scam KH builds are.

The ultimate labor scam pulled off by the Society, is getting JW tradesman to travel to New York City (arguably one of the highest labor markets in the country) and "donate" their work.

'Knocking' Review from East Lansing Film Festival

an announcement was made after the screening that there was going to be a party held for this film at beggars banquet in e. lansing and that all in attendance was invited to come.

If 90-95% in attendance are JW's, then what's the point of the film? In reality, nobody cares except JW's. Those of us in the real world are focused on much more important things. Frankly, I'm glad to hear about all the JW backslapping, it goes to show the utter uselessness of making a film about an insignificant cult.

Let us not forget that the book of Revelations is a collection of "signs". To apply anything from Revelations as literal is to go beyond the intent of scripture. It's always the nutcases who turn to Revelations in an attempt to prove themselves correct.

Outdoor Spirituality.

i often find myself engaged in outdoors activities.

once while fly-fishing on a sunday, i realized a deep spiritual feeling.

standing in a trout stream, watching an otter swim by, and listening to the gurgle of moving water, i felt closer to god than i ever had in a kingdom hall.. has anyone else ever felt this?

Letting go...a letter to my brother

dear friends and fellow sojourners,.

as i posted sometime back, i have been grappling with my last fear from the wtbts--that is, saying good-bye to my mother and brother who are still in the organization by revealing that not only have i left but am now what they consider an apostate.

it has come to me, that i must do this to be finally free of the last vestiges of "hold" that the organization still has on me.

Brigid, I think your letter is wonderfully written and very loving. I applaud your courage in preparing to send it! I have several letters sitting on my harddrive, all prepared to send off to family. Someday, I hope to have the same courage that you do.
