  Orwell, 1984, and the Watchtower

  so my english class just got handed (yesterday) 1984, by george orwell.

  its a book i've been wanting to read for a long time, but haven't been able to (i read non stop for english class).. so i was really excited when i got the book.

  from what i've heard about it, it seemed like it would be really pertinent for people in the watchtower.. all i can say is wow.

  1984 is one of the greatest books ever. The end, in particular, shocked me when I first read it.

  The movie Brazil is a loose re-telling of 1984. I recommend it highly.

  So were any bible prophecies true?

  i'm just wondering to what extent the bible accurately predicted future events?.

  when i was a good little jw, i was constantly reassured that we could have confidence in the paradise because the bible always got it's predictions correct since it was inspired by jah, blah, blah.. does anyone know of a good website which critically examines each bible prophecy one by one?

  what do real bible scholars with no bias make off all these prophecies?.

  Is Christmas for Atheists?

  given that so many practises associated with christmas are blatantly christian in origin, is christmas truly for atheists?

  i know that often there are few christian connotations attributed to it nowadays, in such a secularised society, but history is on record in showing that the whole baby jesus thing and angels singing with their "peace and goodwill" stuff is definitely a christian element.

  would any true atheist today want to drink such a mixed cup?

  Taking Life Too Seriously

  i've been thinking a lot this week about what has gotten my brain into the mess that it is in.

  yes, chemistry plays a part, but i think thoughts affect brain chemistry as much as brain chemistry affects thoughts (especially over a long period of time).

  i know that one thing for sure is true, i take life and all the bits and pieces of it way too seriously, allowing my emotions to be swung on a much greater arc that i should.. but just think about witness childhoods.

  child sacrifice was never god's idea, the prophet jeremiah quoted the almighty as saying.

  he never commanded it, nor did it even enter his mind for worshipers to do such a horrible thing.

  yet the ugly practice arose among professedly religious people in the old testament times.

  Didn't god command Abraham to sacrifice his son? It seems as though that's the first instance of such an idea in the bible, so the idea came from god - even though it wasn't carried out.

  Filibusters are used in the US Senate as well, but they can be overridden... I'm not sure what the rules in the UK house of commons are.

  As for the secular authorities, I frankly don't think it's any of their business. You weren't dealing with criminals, but with people who needed help.

  Excuse me? Molestors are criminals and they deserve to be punished. This man molested two children, and it's extremely unlikely that they are the only two. This is a criminal matter and the guy should be turned in. Praying for pedophiles doesn't protect children - jail does.

  i am extremely disappointed to read some people's comments about the latest news.

  it is one thing to express and opinion, perhaps that you think it isn't as big as you imagined (one wonders what you imagined) but it is another to be downright insulting to people who have put a lot of time and effort into this.. get real.

  I agree with Legolas. It's an interesting essay, but it's just an essay. It was over-hyped.

  My view is that it's just one more small nail in the coffin, nothing more.
