I think I'd spend it observing Julias Caeser's court.

You can spend 6 hours at any point in history, where and when would you go?
by nicolaou inyou are only an invisible observer.
you cannot interact with people or the surroundings at all and will remain unaffected by the experience.
history will not notice you.. so, do you choose to be present 3 hours before and after the big bang!?

I do all my own retirement investing. I've invested in stocks, mutial funds, ETFs, options, futures, and forex. I've learned that the best way to go over time is to mimick the indexes. Most of my money is in S&P500 and NASDAQ index funds. I do some dabbling with individual stocks, but over time it's much harder to match the consistent growth of the market as a whole.
Having said that, the companies that I individually invest in are Altria, Toyota, and FerrellGas Partners. Not a big selection, but solid companies with good growth and a history of dividends.

Argument with my Catholic mother
by jstalin ini was at my parents house last night, having dinner.
i was really tired from staying up too late the night before, so i crashed in their spare bedroom for a few minutes and my mom came in to ask me about religion (again).
i've never been 100% clear with her on where i stand, so i figured this was the point to do it.

candidlynuts - you're right... it's always good to get a woman's point of view :) That's good advice. I just never shy away from a debate on any issue - so it's hard for me to walk away from an argument. I need to let it go.

She started out telling me about a couple of Catholic books she's just read about people who have converted, etc. I've told her in the past that I've read the bible and I'm even more unconvinced about religion after reading it, so she was saying that if I have questions about the bible I should call this and that person. I said I have no questions, it's all very clear. The bible is brutal, god is a narcissistic, cruel being that demands worship and adherance to arbitrary rules. She tried to go on about the concepts in the bible and the main message is love. I disagreed, saying that the old testament in particular is vile and brutal and many people are slaughtered at the behest of god.
Then we got into literal vs. symbolic in the bible, and she pointed out that the story of Noah isn't literal, it's a methaphor about justice. "Justice?!" I said... God murders everyone in the world except for one family in the name of justice? How could that story be about justice?
She asked me if I believe in god and i said no. She said "what about all the people who have prayers answered?" I said "what about the six million people murdered in gas chambers? Their prayers weren't answered." Her response "you can't understand why god does things."
I'm not trying to convert her or change her mind, but I just can't argue with people about religion - they refuse to look at it with any logic.
This is just sort of a rant of frustration - not that I want her to change her mind, just that I couldn't think of one argument she could make to bring me back to religion - but she keeps trying.

Name the good things that Jw's have or believe....
by AK - Jeff inwe always seem to get focused on the bad - and there is plenty of it for sure - and anyone who follows my posts knows i am no wt apologist by any stretch.
but focusing on the postive is a good thing in the 'moving on' process i think too.
what do you think jw's had right?.

I think their lack of interest in politics is a good thing. The world would be better off with less politics.

Outstanding work! Simple logic. I'd like to see them try to wiggle out of that one.

Apart from JW's, do others still feel 1914 was a turning point in history?
by jwfacts inthe watchtower claims that hisorians say 1914 was when the world changed forever.
as a jw the year 1914 is repeated so endlessly that it seems it must have been the turning point in history and hence the beginning of the last days.
but i have never really heard anyone else ever mention that year, apart from the odd history lesson on ww1.. do people in general ever think of or discuss 1914 as being a year of any significance?.

Yes, 1914 was important because it ushered in the era of modern warfare. In addition, WWI precipitated the rise of Hitler and the Soviet Union. I'm not saying the JWs got it right, just a good guess on their part because Armageddon hasn't happened.
