US Extraordinary Rendition Program--good idea or bad idea?
by Merry Magdalene intoronto, sept. 18 - canadian intelligence officials passed false warnings and bad information to american agents about a muslim canadian citizen, after which u.s. authorities secretly whisked him to syria, where he was tortured, a judicial report found monday.. the report, released in ottawa, was the result of a 2 1/2-year inquiry that represented one of the first public investigations into mistakes made as part of the united states' "extraordinary rendition" program, which has secretly spirited suspects to foreign countries for interrogation by often brutal methods.. .
oh well, he was just a muslim so who cares, right?
more justifiable "collateral damage" in the war on terror.

Shipping a citizen of Canada off to Syria to essentially be tortured. What ever happened to due process? These sorts of events destroy any credibility that the US had in asserting the moral high ground. I'm saddened by my government's behavior. This is so completely immoral and unconstitutional that I'm speechless. The Iraq war has turned out to be a disaster for American credibility, morality, and individual rights. A so-called conservative president has shown us for what he really is.

The wife said over and over how bad things are, the world is so bad, that everything is sooo bad, and the governments are bad and there are bad diseases, and there is war, to which I added, "that's bad".
Lol... that just made me laugh.
Fictional JW conversation:
JW1: Things are really bad
JW2: Yeah, they're bad
JW1: War and diseases are pretty bad too
JW2: Yeah, bad
JW1: And the governments are bad. Things are so bad.
JW2: Pretty bad stuff
JW1: And the gays, they're bad
JW2: Bad
JW1: Ok, well, I'm gonna jump into my SUV and head off the movie theater after we eat out

Unfortunately, the terms liberal and liberalism have been co-opted by today's socialists. Liberal, in the classical sense, used to mean support of individualism, limited government, and a "hands off" attitude toward others. People link Peter Singer and today's American (and European) "liberals" prefer to sacrifice the individual for the benefit of the collective. Singer, in particular, espouses utilitarianism, which means that the individual is just about meaningless as long as the maximum amount of positive outcome is felt by the majority of people. His is the vilest form of collectivism.
So, Shining One, you misunderstand the terms you are using. Liberalism doesn't necessarily lead to infanticide - disregard for individuals does. It is the moral relativism of philosophers like Singer that implicetly accepts that individual people are not as important as the collective good. The classical liberal view is that the individual is of prime importance and that no government or individual has the right to violate individual rights.
However, the conservative Christian view is that god makes up the rules and the individual is subject to the whim of a divine power's mood.
As for Simon, et el, who like to generalize that Americans don't care about anyone but themselves - well, you are wrong. There's nothing like a bigoted generalization to make you feel better about yourself - but perhaps that's just a little JW-think still creeping through.

Was Simplification the Downfall of the Watchtower?
by NotBlind ina thought i had daydreaming while at the recent convention .
old timers in the organization often reminisce about the way the wts was many years ago.
attending a convention meant (a) getting hot meals, (b) orchestra music before and during sessions, and (c) two, three, or even four dramas.
-

It sounds like the dubs have scrapped any remaining esprit de corps amongst the members. The simple acts of working together to organize conventions or even cook the meals builds that bond between people which makes them feel like they are part of something. Now the organization dictates and doesn't require any group participation in anything more meaningful than a book study, where nothing concrete gets accomplished.
The organization is managing its own decline, and the actions it is taking to try and cut costs is contributing to its further decline.

Make it clear to her before hand - that she should NOT expect any sort of conversion or reconsideration. Make it very clear that you are sure of yourself and that in no way will going to the convention make you reconsider.
