mrs. anderson, i realize that trying to cover all bases in your pending russell bio would be impossible, but i do hope that you will be able to include a section on the first president of the watch tower society, william h. conley.
i hope that you have had a chance to research conley with some degree of thoroughness, so as to dispel some of the half-truths that some bible students and jws try to promote (such as that conley's age and health caused his inactivity with russell after 1881).

Now, we know that WILLIAM HENRY CONLEY did not quietly fade into oblivion after 1882, but to the contrary even had a higher profile than did Charles Taze Russell from 1882 until his death in 1897.
Now, it is obvious why Russell and the WatchTower Society have kept CONLEY'S history a secret.
It is even obvious why the "other" religious group have kept CONLEY'S "WatchTower history" a secret.
However, what about the Russellites?
The "Bible Students" who frequent here claim to be the guardians of the truth on the history of Russell and the WatchTower.
WHAT IS THE RUSSELLITES EXCUSE FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONSPIRACY TO HIDE THE FACT THAT THE FIRST PRESIDENT (and 50% of the ORIGINAL Bible Students) TURNED HIS BACK ON RUSSELL'S MUMBO-JUMBO? -

thank you for replying to my topic on william h. conley, the watch tower society's first president.
if not for your finding the "treasure" you described, we might not know this fact even today.

Bumping up this thread, so newbies can read about 3 reports of alleged child sexual abuse involving 4 JW congregations in the same Circuit; all within a 40 mile radius of each other.
(Intended as a rebuttal for both current and former JWs who say they were Elders, MSs, etc. for 100 years and never ever heard an instance of sex abuse.) -

THE GOVERMENT AND SHUNNING.....
by Mary inafter reading the tragedy of puternut, i was thinking that perhaps it's time that the government took another look at what can happen when they allow religions like the jws, to cut off family members without a second thought.
surely someone's rights to have normal religions with their family should come before freedom of religion.
isn't it ironic that the gb fought so hard in court to obtain freedom of religion, yet their own members commit suicide when they try to express this very right.

Sue the WTS and Elders using the "TORT OF MISREPRESENTATION".
I assure you that it will work every bit as well against "shunning" as it will against the "blood issue". -

tell me, what is it that happens to you when you ' know' you have the 'holy spirit'?

It was that long ago that my Reply would have been more blasphemous than Skyman's, and not nearly as cute as Golf's.
Remember that the relationship is one between Christ and the individual. Who knows what "comment" might be the "trigger" for someone reading this thread.
Some things I take personally, but not such comments. I understand such, because I was a "Skyman" -- only worse. -

Spanner:
I'm not going to take time to put together an essay to answer this often-asked question, so please bear with me as I ramble.
First, several times I asked this same question of my now deceased JW Grandmother, who professed to be one of the 144,000. She always answered with a curt:
"You/we/I just know."
To this day, I still have doubts that she was "of the annointed". She had supposedly been a "christian" before she and my GGF joined up with the Cult. I'll just have to wait and see.
As for myself, as a JW, I never ever felt any relationship with GOD. That continued for several years after I escaped.
THEN, one day, "I just knew" that something had changed. It occurred while I was re-reading the New Testament for the umpteenth time.
I am no stranger to eading, studying, and doing research. All I can tell you is that "something" opened my eyes to the sciptures so that I could see things I had never seen as a JW.
This may offend those who remain anti-trinitarian, but my experience mainly was regarding the divinity of the "Son of GOD", who I was led to surrender to as One worthy of not only my respect and following, but One worthy of my WORSHIP.
So, there you have it:
"I just know."
PS: I did not seek HIM out (nor the understanding of the relationship). He and the "understanding" came to me. Why?
I don't know. But, thank you LORD!!! -

Notice how close Conley's 1890s post-WatchTower "ministry" sounds to that of Charles Taze Russell's. One can only wonder how much influence that the older William Henry Conley (who was 12 years Chuckie's senior), had on WatchTower theology:
QUADRENNIAL ANNIVERSARY
Among the visitors present were: Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Conley, of Pittsburg; ... .
The first service was Friday afternoon, at which Mr. Conley spoke on "Meat in Due Season," Matt. 24: 45-47, showing God's plan in revealing truth and fulfilling prophecies in "due time." Daniel was to "seal the book," but John was to "seal not the book." The one was not due, the other "is at hand." Many other instances wre cited from the dim light of the antediluvian period to the full glory of the coming Sun of Righteousness. ...
On Sunday afternoon Mr. Conley spoke to a large audience on "The Second Coming of Christ," using his large, comprehensive chart. This was a rich treat to all. The singing of Mr. and Mrs. Conley was a great inspiration in these anniversary services.

I believe that at the time of Conley's death in July 1897 that William and Sarah were members of the Fifth United Presbyterian Church of Allegheny.
This "conclusion" comes from piecing together several bits and pieces of info from multiple sources; rather than direct statement. Thus, it is possible this is not accurate.
I have not verified this with that church. Others are welcome to do so.
