though i went for the obligatory meeting attendance, it was nice to be able to go on a fishing expedition for sisters, if that was your choosing.
Brothers make it very clear they are checking out the goods and sisters go to great effort to adorn themselves for display, and they're all painfully obvious about it. As a single woman attending the assemblies for spiritual purposes , I found the meat market aspect both amusing and pathetic.

my mom's got this pioneer sister friend who stays at our house every weekend (she stays in some remote town that's far away from the hall) and i go into my bathroom cabinet this morning and she used up half the bottle of daily oil control cream for my face i had in there.
i mean ladies, you already know how expensive those things are!
and i would always just use a pint size amount so the bottle was filled to capacity.
I don't think this is something exclusive to JWs. There are lots of inconsiderate or thoughtless people in this world, people often do careless things that aren't meant to hurt anyone. She may have thought the stuff in the cabinet was to be shared with her.
I agree with Anewme, when someone is a guest in your home, they should be treated graciously. We expect them to return that behavior, but sometimes they just don't.
Couldn't you just consider that little bit of lotion a gift to her? Maybe she can't afford to buy it and couldn't resist the temptation to try it but was too embarrassed to ask.
Why not take your mom up on her offer, buy a bottle of the lotion and give it to your house guest next time she comes over. Or just drop it and forgive her indiscretion -- it's only a little bit of lotion, a small gift that might have helped her feel better about herself.
Yes, take your stuff out of the cabinet if you're not willing to share it. You'll save yourself a lot of stress.

Hi Keith, interesting observations. Art can contain fascinating subliminal or perceived messages.
Michelangelo's works at the Sistine Chapel have been widely viewed and analyzed for satanic and devil-inspired imagery too. Some see those images clearly, many scrutinize them carefully to find them, and others see only holy and God-like portrayals. Many study Michelangelo's work to learn his motives, some simply accept them as inspired, others admire them for his talent with color and depiction. It's all part of what has kept his work alive for so many centuries.
Maybe Watchtower art is being used the same way - for interpretation and to ensure longevity of the pictures and the words and unknown motives behind them...
maybe it's about why one looks at things and how one chooses to view them.

i've recently had lengthy pm discussions with a person claiming to be a current jw.
this person has been above the standard level of arrogant for a jw, raising conceit to practically a defining characteristic.
you almost expect that when you're dealing with a member of the "elite".. but he goes beyond it.
Dave, the attitude and approach you describe was once explained to me as some sort of "tough love" --
maybe a twisted interpretation and certainly doesn't justify it IMO, just tossing it in for consideration.

Children can recognize hypocrisy at an early age. Adults who tell them not to lie, then contradict themselves by lying, are hypocrites. And that's one of the messages the children hear -- that they can SAY it's bad to lie, but it's okay to DO IT anyway.

It's a nice thing to believe in...a guy going around giving kids presents without payment.
It would be only be nice if it was the truth, Under. But it's not. There is no guy or as oldflame said, a fat man in a red suit.
And there is payment. The children are told that they must be 'good' or santa WON'T bring them presents. What's that message???
It worries me that these might be the same adults who tell children that God will punish them if they're not 'good'.

The fun is only there until the child realizes they've been taught to believe in something false and imaginary -- then goes a little deeper because of the teaching that the child must be 'good' in order to get the gifts, so there's another destructive factor in the mix.
I agree, they do figure out the santa lie themselves... at the same time, they figure out the deceit of the adults who encouraged them to believe it was real.
There are plenty of wonderful, innocent activities that trigger the imaginations of children.
Ian, sorry, but honestly I fail to see what is so magical about christmas..... but we know that's another whole discussion!
I think the teacher DID think, and did the right thing by being honest to herself and the kid.

under, there's NOTHING wrong with kids having dreams and little make believe stories --- I agree, it's important to the development of their imaginations and good to stimulate creativity.
They also need to understand what is PRETEND and what's REALITY. It's up to the adults to teach them this, and not perpetuate what amounts to a lie in the child's eyes.
We don't encourage them to believe Bugs Bunny is real do we? Why should the fantasy of santa claus or any other imaginary character be any different?
It's funny isn't it, the differences? I understand your feeling about your childhood --
to that point though, Id rather have been taught to believe in God, not imaginary icons that offered nothing except materialism and dishonesty, and an unrealistic view of the world and the adults in it.
