  Watchtower History Gem: I Found When Maria Got Her Teaching Certificate

  i consider myself an amateur watchtower history buff.

  i have always read that maria frances ackley russell, charles taze russell's first and only wife, went to a teacher training college and was a teacher for a number of years before marrying russell.

  but, i have never seen proof that she truly did finish college and became a certified teacher.

  I was researching Maria Frances Ackley Russell. I have gone down a rabbit hole lately and have been interested in her life and the part she played in the early Watchtower that the society would like to sweep under the rug.

  There is a record of her being a student at Pennsylvania Central High School when she was about 16, which had a free teacher training program, but during the Russells divorce proceedings, she said went to Curry Normal School for her teacher training, which a teacher program that required tuition. I was looking for proof that she attended Curry University when I happened upon this gem. I am still not sure at which institution she studied at to become a teacher. Perhaps, it was both. More research is needed.

  I have found records of Maria being listed as a teacher at the First Ward in Allegheny for the 1868 and the 1869 school year. That would have been when she was 18 and 19 years old. I need to do more research on teacher education from that time period. It is possible she was in training and didn't have her "permanent certificate" when was teaching in 1868.

  Awesome! I had heard/read that she did some of the early writing in the Watchtower magazine.

  Yes, she did. If you compare writing styles of the early Watchtower writings, you can tell which ones she wrote and which ones were penned unedited by CTR. His had a lot more grammar mistakes!

This is significant because it is proof of how much more educated she was than Russell, a man who would go on to create an organization that rallies against higher education.

  greetings, techies:.

  i'm teaching a class right now and my students' desktop computer is showing microsoft word upside down.

  we share documents between our two computers but cannot because of this crazy turn of events.. any ideas?.

  Haha! I use to do that to some of my friends at work on April Fools Day. Sometimes I would turn it sideways, and I would walk in and they were trying to work at their computer with their head cocked sideways because they couldn't figure out how to fix it. Haha. It was all in good fun and the prank was always returned in full. :)

  Control of information is very powerful. Evidently powerful enough to cause the Watchtower to spend a lot of money on lawyers to squash and bury any information they don't want disseminated.

  Terrific movie monologue from "Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri'

  just watched this movie last night.. the premise of the title and film centers around the mother of young girl, who was raped, murdered, and set on fire by an unknown killer.

  convinced that the local police could be doing more, she erects billboards outside of town, calling into question the efforts of the town's beloved chief of police.

  this does not sit well with the other townspeople, and soon, the town priest comes to visit and admonish her.and after hearing him tell her if she came to church more regularly, she would be able to find the peace and resolution she needs over her daughter's death, she delivers this speech to him:.

  I thought it was a good movie. My only objection to the movie is how they portrayed people from Missouri. Every single character was a racist, backwoods, ignorant person. We're not ALL like that in Missouri!

  When I was a kid, the visiting Circuit Overseer told me a "riddle". He said that a man was resurrected that they have confirmed is the original Adam. How did they know for sure? The answer was "because he didn't have a belly button". I know ... lame.

  Funny News From My Old Congragation - Elder Fight!

  i haven't stopped laughing since i heard this.

  a pimo in my last congregation told me that an elder has been removed from his elder position.

  apparently he grabbed another elder by the throat, put him up against a wall in the back room and punched him in on the nose... during an elders meeting on thursday evening after the meeting.. the congregation were running round like headless chickens wondering what to do?

  I grew up an elder's kid. We always had to stay late after the meeting with the other elder wives and kids when the elders had to meet after the regular meeting. One time, when I was around 12, the elder's meeting got so heated, we could hear them screaming at each other and at one point, pounding on the table (I think). My mom and the other elder wives made us get out our songbooks and sing "Kingdom Melodies" to drown them out so we couldn't hear what they were saying. It was crazy!

  me: well, they were saying that it will expand and eventually burn out.. jw: but it can't do that, it just keeps blowing up inside and getting more power.. me: well, they were talking about stars in general, how they have a life span.. jw: but god didn't make it that way, it's firmly established to time indefinite.

  it's not like the sun is a regular star.
