I love Bill Nye. I always have. But I felt like he sold out when he agreed to do that debate. It felt like it was just a publicity stunt to promote Ham's new "museum".

Could the ancient Jews eat pig fractions?
by JeffT inthe recent threads on blood fractions got me to thinking about ways to expose the absurdity of the watchtower's position on blood.
so i thought of the titular question.
would a hebrew have understood the prohibition on pork as meaning he had to avoid "major" pig fractions (ham, bacon, ribs) but "minor" pig fractions like pickled feet and fried pork rinds were ok?

The Watchtower has a long history of not accepting many science concepts. They use to preach that receiving an organ transplant was the same as cannibalism. To me, that isn't much different than their stance on blood transfusions being the same as eating (or digesting) blood.
They let go of their ridiculous stance against organ transplants in 1980, but for some reason, they are having a difficult time seeing the error of their ways with blood transfusions.
The AJWRB website has a great page that showcases the Watchtower's silliest science and medicine claims in their earlier literature. http://ajwrb.org/the-watchtower-on-science-and-medicine

Primary school teacher tried invading temple of Jehovah's Witnesses when 'eight out of ten' drunk, hearing hears
Samantha Beresford Credit: Wales News ServiceA primary school teacher tried to invade a hall full of Jehovah's Witnesses after getting "eight out of ten" drunk at an end-of-term staff party, a hearing heard.
Samantha Beresford, 51, was out with colleagues when she got into an argument with worshippers outside the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Swansea.
The teacher swore at members of the temple as she attempted to confront her sister-in-law - who she believed was inside - over her views on homosexuality.
Beresford refused to leave the premises and grabbed one worshipper by the neck which caused a bleed.
The incident, back in July 2016, led to a criminal conviction of assault by beating, but she has now also been stripped of her teaching qualification after the Cardiff Fitness to Practice panel deemed her unsuitable for the profession.
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses where the teacher attacked a man Credit: Wales News ServiceWitnesses said Beresford was heard by witnesses shouting obscenities, making sexual references and swearing at Jehovah's Witnesses.
She was seen making a lewd gesture on the steps outside Kingdom Hall were an altercation took place.
Case presenter Cadi Dewi said: "Samantha Beresford attempted to enter a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses whilst intoxicated following celebratory drinks at the end of the school term.
"There was an altercation with a member of the congregation outside the hall when she refused to leave the premises."
The teacher had been working at 500-pupil Townhill Community School in Swansea and told police she had been "eight out of ten" drunk.
Church member Gavin Young said: "She was shouting when she walked up the path towards me and she was making references to her relative and making references to her religious views on homosexuality.
"She wanted to walk past me through the open door so I grabbed her wrists and she grabbed me by the neck and held on to my throat for five seconds which resulted in a bleed."
Beresford, of Sketty, Swansea, was convicted of assault by beating at Swansea Magistrates' Court in 2016.
The teacher, who worked at the school since 1991 and was "well thought of," was fined £600 and ordered to pay £50 in compensation.
In a statement Beresford said: "Against my better judgement I walked towards the hall, shouting expletives believing my relative to be inside. I had more to drink than usual and was tired after a busy term.
"I deeply regret my actions which led to my arrest and caused great distress to my family. The incident continues to have a devastating effect.
"I let myself, my family, my friends, and school down badly and I am ashamed and embarrassed. It's something I will regret until the day I die."
The Cardiff Fitness to Practice panel chairman Jacqueline Turnbull said Mrs Beresford had not demonstrated a "significant level of insight" into her behaviour.
She was suspended from teaching for six months - and will have to reapply to join the teacher's register

Born ins: did you have "near life experiences"?
by truthseeker ini recently watched the 90s movie fight club for the first time and heard the phrase "near life experience.".
for me, a different definition of this phrase would be someone who grew up in the truth and led a very secluded and restricted life (like me) but on rare occasions actually experienced something that was considered quite normal by most people.. growing up in "the troof" was depressing.
it was characterized by long periods of loneliness.

I love that term "near life experience".
When I was 14 and a homeschooled pioneer, I was best friends with another girl of the same age, who came from what we called a "spiritually weak" family. Her mom had been disfellowshipped a time or two, and was already on her third worldly husband. My friend went to public school, and while she technically had the same JW restrictions as I did, her mom was much more lenient than my own parents, and I learned to take advantage of that.
One fall weekend, I got permission from my parents to spend the night at my friend's house. Then, we got permission from her mom to go bowling with her worldly friends at school. What we really did was walk to her school to attend the homeschooling football game AND the homecoming dance. It was nothing like I had envisioned in my head. It was a bunch of awkward teenagers running around drinking punch, dancing, and talking ... along with a bunch of awkward teachers. Me and my friend joined in and did the same. Then, we went home. And nothing bad happened. Nothing!
It was my first real "near life experience". I can't believe I survived it.

Here is some of the text from Olin Moyle's letter to Rutherford when he resigned in 1937. Some of Rutherford's behavior toward others mirrors what we have seen and heard come out of the Whitehouse. Rutherford's manner of verbally abusing others around him is only one of the parallels I see with Trump.
Conditions at Bethel are a matter of concern to all of the Lord’s people. Nowhere among imperfect men can there be perfect freedom from oppression, discrimination and unfairtreatment, but at the Lord’s headquarters on earth conditions should be such that injusticewould be reduced to the minimum. That is not the case here at Bethel and a protest should be made against it. I am in a good position to make such protest because your treatment of me has been generally kind, considerate and fair. I can make this protest in the interests of the Bethel family and of the Kingdom work without any personal interest entering into the matter.
Treatment of Bethel Family
Shortly after coming to Bethel we were shocked to witness the spectacle of our brethren receiving what is designated as a "trimming" from you. The first, if memory serves me correct, was a tongue lashing given to C. J. Woodworth. Woodworth in a personal letter to you stated something to the effect that it would be serving the devil to continue using our present day calendar. For that he was humiliated, called a jackass, and given a public lambasting. Others have been similarly treated. McCaughey, McCormick, Knorr, Prosser, Price, Van Sipma, Ness and others have been similarly scolded. They have been publicly called to account, condemned, and reprimanded without any previous notice. This summer some of the most unfair public reproaches have been given. J. Y. McCauley asked a question which carried with it a criticism of the present method of Watch Tower study. For that he was severely reprimanded. Your action constituted a violation of the principle for which we are fighting, towit, freedom of speech. It was the action of a boss and not that of a fellow servant. Securing an efficient mode of study with imperfect study leaders is no easy task, and no method yet produced has proved to be one hundred per cent perfect. You stated that no complaints had come to you concerning this method of study. If that be the case you have not had all the facts presented to you. There is complaint in various places that the Watch Tower studies have degenerated into mere reading lessons. It may be that the present method is the best that can be used, but in view of known limitations honest criticism should not be censored nor honest critics punished.
Brother Worsley received a public denunciation from you because he prepared and handed to brethren a list of helpful Scripture citations on fundamental topics. How can we consistently condemn religionists for being intolerant when you exercise intolerance againstthose who work with you? Doesn’t this prove that the only freedom permitted at Bethel isfreedom to do and say that which you wish to be said and done? The Lord certainly never authorized you to exercise such high handed authority over your fellow servants.
Since the Madison Square Garden meeting there has been a distressing condition of restraint and suspicion at Bethel. The ushers were placed in a tough spot but did an excellent piece of work. They exercised care and diligence in watching arrivals at the Garden, and prevented a number of suspicious characters from entering. They were on the job immediately when the disturbance started and quelled a disturbance which would have otherwise reached serious proportions. But for two weeks following the convention there has been constant criticism and condemnation of them from you. They have been charged with dereliction of duty and labeled as "sissies". To see some of these boys break down and cry because of your unkind remarks is, to say the least, saddening. You can read the entire letter here: http://watchtowerdocuments.org/documents/1939%20Olin%20Moyles%20letter%20to%20Rutherford.pdf

On a related note, I just discovered that Rutherford was knee deep in politics in Missouri before he moved to Pennsylvania to be Russell's lawyer. He ran for office twice and lost both times.
