The story of my life (part 8- hanging on by a bare thread)
by onacruse ini can't remember the drive home from the airport...all i can remember is how relieved, how incredibly thankful, i was to be back on my own bed, in a safe environment, with two parents who would help me get through all of this.
it was the first peaceful night of sleep i'd had in a long long time.. i also don't remember much at all about the explanations i tried to give to my folks.
but i do remember this: i apparently told my dad enough such that he was compelled to drive over to see the congregation servant (as they were then called), who had himself been at bethel...and demanded to know why he hadn't told my folks about what bethel life was really like..why he had let them send their firstborn son into such an environment without any warning whatsoever.

Tarot Cards
by free2beme ini own five tarot card decks, and use them often.
not so often that i live my life by them, but enough.
one deck is one i use more then others, as i feel more of a connection with the cards.

I had several readings done by so-called psychics, and they weren't too accurate. I bought a Rider-Waite deck and read for myself. I can't read for anyone else. When I ask a question, like, will I get the job, I get specific answers and the cards are never wrong! They're amazing!

Describe the WILDEST JW party you ever attended!! no seriously......
by kid-A ini realize this is totally context and culturally dependent, but the old toronto jw youth scene was quite wild during the years 1984-1994. .
one example, a group of about 40 jw kids would go up to a ski resort (usually mount st.louis/moonstone or blue mountain) over the x-mas week-end.
one year we rented out a block of rooms in a resort close to the ski lodge.

Some of our congregation's wild youth events included pop and pizza, and then Bible charades after. A really big deal was chaparoned roller skating. If nobody was watching, teens tried to brush up against each other, wow!

They have to keep their conversations shallow, because they have to always be careful what they say, lest anything might be considered worldly or maybe get them reported to the Nazi's...um, elders. And the listener is obligated to listen carefully lest anything should need to be reported! It's not considered appropriate or loving to spend all your before or after meeting time with just one or two people only, and not to mingle and show brotherly love and fellowship to everybody. All the while they're chatting, they're observing hair lenght, how much jewelry, perfume, makeup, skirt length, are shoes appropriate, nails modest, tie wholesome, bla, bla.

What silly rules did your congregation make up?
by weinermcgee inelders were famous for making up stupid rules with no bible base at all as an ego trip i guess, what were some of yours?
i am not talking about the stupid rules that we all had to follow, just the congregation specific silly ones.. 1. having to button your jacket while on stage (this was later changed due to all the elders having a beer gut).
2. suits only or no privledges.

I was the only child of an elder. Whenever it was time to shop for shoes, coats or dresses, first Mother and I would scout out the stores' clearance racks for something modest, holding skirts and dresses against me to make sure the length was proper and befitting a modest Christian teen walking in the way of life. And shoes were more complicated! If Mom screened and approved them, it had to wait till Saturday after witlessing. Then my dad would come to the Mall with us and carefully scrutinize them for modesty, gaudiness, practicality, a proper example, bla-bla, thenIi had to put them on and walk in them to be sure they wouldn't stumble or be following a worldly fad! By then, I'd grown a size, lol! Talk about nerve wracking! The guys had to measure their hair so it didn't touch their collar and stumble the newly interested ones. If a family went out to eat, it shouldn't be to a fancy place, or you weren't putting King-Dumb interests first, using the money rather, to advance the Witlessing work. If you took a nice vacation, you had to fellowship with the "friends" in other lands and downplay the fun you had. Better still, every one had to take one of the charter tours to Mecca, er,Bethel

Do Must Dubs Have Pre-Marital Sex?
by tall penguin init's not often talked about but in my experience a lot of witnesses have sex (or something like it) during their courtship.
and most of them never go to the elders about it.
recent case in point: my dear friend got married this past summer.

Ha-ha-! I remember a horny (appearing) little couple at our Hell, er, Hall. He was 18 and she was 19.The fine young brother was giving rise to grave concerns because his hair was over his collar, (everyone raise their eyebrows.) The sister had wavy, thick, flaming carrot- colored hair and big ta-ta's! Yes. The thing is, the were sitting together at meetings every week! Yes they were! So, with a heavy heart, my Uncle-Elder, knew deep in his guts they were going to fall into immorality any minute. The elders met with them and explained their choices: stop sitting next to each other at meetings, or...get married and soon! They got married right away. Jeez!

My scariest, tho I was too young and naive to be scared, was when my parents dropped me off on Saturday mornings to study with the children on my mother's study, Rose R. The grandfather started being in the house also, lying in the back bedroom and calling for me to come "see him." I was a skinny girl of 15, and he was a huge dude in his 50's, drooling over a porkchop! Never occurred to my parents this might not be a good situation to drop your virgin daughter off to!
My funniest was when an odd brother in his 40's, never married was in our cargroup and somebody had to work this house where a known gay man lived. Brother L. blushed and protested, but went to the house. Strangely, he was inside forever! And did many return visits, too, and they lasted for a couple hours! Must've been well received, lol!

"This just can't last much longer...."
by BrendaCloutier ini went over and visited my parents today.
my mom broke her hip while we were in hawaii, and i've been mostly house/bed ridden myself since we got home.
so i finally got over there today.. we talked a little about the hurricane, which was on the news she turned off.

I guess the elderly ones are actually better off staying in, because at least they've got something to keep them active. What would they do with their time, if not going to meetings all week? It burns me up though, all the money my dad's spent on gas to haul people around in service for 40 some years, and now that he's old, shouldn't they be offering him rides? Doesn't work that way tho, they still bug him constantly even with his failing health. But do ya think anybody can find time to help him cut his grass? Nope, my poor Mom's out there in the heat, doing a section at a time! I mentioned this to an elder who I supervise at work, and he explained airily that some congregations are just more loving than others!

I too was told I wouldn't finish high school, need to worry about college, etc. So I finally put myself through while working a full time job. Never told my parents i got a Bachelors degree, and they never seem to question how it is that I earn such a good salary! Now, my husband and I have a rather large and comfortable home, and my parents are now in their seventies, with diminishing health. My father retired at 56, since Armageddon was coming any second, and he wouldn't have to make his savings last. They are finally making little hints about stretching money, heat bills getting worrysome, etc, and joking about whether there is room for them in our house later on. Yet, just last week, they were chirping about how "the brothers" sure were on the spot immediately in the Katrina disaster areas, and of course, nobody else was there right away like "our people" were! Sucked back in! Does anyone else have elderly parents, and wonder how they can still believe? How can they not be angry about 1975, when they are old and can't afford heat, and are running out of money?
