Birthday celebrations and customs - Are they for Christians?

i sent my birthday document (http://thebentinel.com/jw-birthdays.html) to a poster here that is at the very least a jw-sympathizer, if not a full-blown jw.

the response i got back indicated that my reasoning on it was seriously flawed and essentially any idiot with a passing knowledge of scripture and history can tell that birthdays are not something christians should celebrate.. of course, if you're not a bible-believer or a god-believer, you couldn't care less about pagan origins and all that.

but let's keep this conversation on the 'appropriate for christians' vein.

Hi all.

It's not my own thought, but it hit me as I read it:

Instead of thinking of the birthday of Pharaoh as a 'bad' thing because he killed a man...it might be possible it's the other way around.

Those two men in jail (well, three, but Joseph was innocent) were guilty of something, broke a law against Pharaoh.

Instead of killing them BOTH, which might have been normal , he killed only one of them. The other man was free again. It was kind of a gift, maybe because Pharaoh was happy because it was his birthday??!!

In that case, this birthday history is not a 'bad' example anymore.

i'm getting very little done at work today.

I did do some cleaning... and everytime I was thinking: maybe the next time I check..the news will be out in the open...and then i couldn't resist it anymore...and checked again... and again...

Now I can imagine how worldly kids feel for christmas...What gift will be in that BIG box?? ;P

well ten days ago i got an email sent to [email protected] i didn't really look at it too hard, but something made me go back to it just now - i think it was intended for [email protected] !!.

Ow, this is sooo funny.

We had this happening one day too. In fact...it was a JW sister who lied and had stolen a lot of money...she tried to sneak away and moved to another place. Didn't tell the police, the elders, the lawyer or the family where she was...

But she sent a "I am moving"-letter by e-mail to the electricity company.

And they replied.

"Dear customer, thanks for giving your new address. We now know you will be living at (address & place) after (date)..."

But they misspelled the e-mail address with one 'a' and so the reply arrived not at this "sister' 's email box...but in her brothers inbox.(same last name...) and so the whole family knew where she was going to live! And they told the police...of course :-)

It's in the Dutch KM too.

But since they told us on the circuit assembly that 8-year old kids are (quote:) NOT too young to make the important decision to be baptized....I am not surprised anymore... (The br. said, addressing 8 year old children: "Did you already ask your father: When can I be baptized?"

By the way its sooo funny ...an elder told us last week that he missed our kids in KH. He heard of our friends daughter, who is 14 y/o now. Her parents let het make her own decision to visit KH or not. What did the elder tell us:

"Of course it can't be possible that children of 13 or 14 years old decide for themselves wether they visit the meetings or not..."

So let me summarise :

8 years old, a child can make decision to be baptized into an organisation for life.

12 years old, a child can make a decision about health items, and say NO to blood. (or yes...but they don't want to hear that one, of course)

14 years old and a child is NOT supposed to have a personal opinion about meetings in the KH. ???!!! Where's the sense in that?

also, it's a form of self-glorification and vanity. (JWs are into worshipping God, not self).

you need to carefulliy read Judges 11:40 and 1 samuel 18:6,7 - it's not wrong to honour people. Here are two examples, of people who served GOD, who where honoured and celebrated.
