The fastest scripture looker upper
by SacrificialLoon ina comment by rubadub in the thread about learning new things at the meetings made me remember something, and gave me a chuckle.. i would always see how fast i could look up the scriptures during the talks, and race to beat most everyone else.
of course everyone else didn't realize i was racing them, but i'd always feel a smug (and perhaps a bit self-righteous) satisfaction at having the scripture looked up and ready to follow along while from the sights and sounds around me most everyone else was still looking it up.
being able to look up jehovah's word with such speed would surely earn me spiritual brownie points.

Did Fred Franz?
by sspo inat the service meeting this week it was mentioned that fred franz was very educated and spoke 6,7 languages.
and was able to give 1.5 hrs talks without an outline and quote all the scriptures from memory.. i heard that about him for the last 30 years.. is it true or just a mith?
anyone know more about it?.

Nearly Middle Aged Woman Asks: Should I watch the Sopranos?
by Crumpet inokay last night the sopranos got voted the best drama ever to be shown on tv.
i have never watched a single episode, but before i commit myself to starting from season 1 and working my way through to season 6 or whatever it is up to can anyone here tell me what is good about it.
what are its strengths?.

Birthday pay for JWs
by uuus2b1 inwhere i work... an employee's birthday is a paid holiday.
as a witness and an elder, i always had a tough time explaining why jws didn't celebrate birthdays but could accept the day off and be paid for it .
"a matter of conscience" was usually the explanation.

Why must observers attend the Kingdom Halls for the Memorial?
by RULES & REGULATIONS injesus had only 12 members attend and partake the last meal and memorial.there were no observers in the room.each disciple was given bread to eat and wine to drink.there is no mention of other people in the room who couldn't eat or drink the last meal.this was only for those who would partake of this meal.. why does the wts feel that observers need to be at this yearly event?
why can't the elders who(supposedly) have any 144,000 in their congregations,have a memorial with only these members?
if jesus wanted observers he would of had some at his last meal and requested that they be present from then on..

I've always wondered why there's the big push for memorial attendance myself. It's just about the most boring meeting of the year. If before or after the meeting you're talking with someone and laughing, you must not appreciate the solemnness of the occasion. Does any newcomer ever attend and say, "oh yeah, this is where I want to be"?
The memorial was the last meeting I attended some 5 or 6 years ago, and afterwards vowing never to return. The ritual of it all kind of freaked me out since at that time I hadn't been to a meeting in years.

What did you have to dispose of when you became a dub?
by exwitless inlittle drummer boy's comment on the d&d thread made me think about this:.
when i became one of the borg, i threw out about $600 worth of pnp materials and books, a fact that i was proud of at the time and which makes me sick now because almost all of it is irreplaceable.
he also threw away who knows how many cds that were "bad" for dubs; also threw away a framed picture of a dragon that was really cool, and maybe some cool rock band t-shirts.. i don't remember having to physically throw away a lot of stuff, but i had to resign from the citizen's band i was in (played the clarinet), threw away my good friends from high school, etc.. what did you all throw away when you became dubs that you regret now?.

Since my mom became a dub when I was about 5, I had to give up my Batman cape.

Remember how great the get-togethers were in the 1980's??
by PaNiCAtTaCk ini remembers skating parties at least once a month, volleyball at the park, get-togethers where everyone would play bible charades and sing kingdoms songs, going to the river to swim with the whole congregation after the sunday meeting, spending the afternoon at the lake eating watermelon and water skiing.
it was a great upbringing!
also, i dont want to leave out the strong feelings of eliteness that i had even as a child, of having the truth.

That made me think of my step-dad remodelling an old duplex that we lived in back in 1974. He made all sorts of secret compartments for the "literature". I wonder what the people thought when they tore that place down about 10 years ago?
