Alternatives to JWs
by Xander insince there are new people coming to this board on fairly regular basis with questions about the jw religion, i thought i'd pose this topic.. many, upon leaving the organization, don't really know where to turn for guidance.
"look to yourself" doesn't really cut it when you've been told how to think your whole life.. many choose atheism, which is fine.
however, for those still looking for a religion, here is a site that lists many of the worlds major religious movements.

OK - so i did it twice....
The first time i did it, i answered all the questions as would your typical brainwashed dub.... ans, no surprise here, got 100% JW.
My second time, I did it as I actually feel. Surprisingly, since I answered many questions completely opposite of how witnesses really view things, I was still 71% JW. That's scary... I was 100% Liberal Protestant though.
Xander, in response ot your question of whether it was off base or not, I am not sure. I think some questions only offered teh option to take not applicabel, because how i feel was not on there. all in all though, interesting quiz, Xander... Thanks

" Shay "
by TheRecordCollector inthe following was emailed to me, i'm fowarding it to you.
this will either make you cry, give you cold chills or leave you cold, but it puts life into perspective!
at a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the school's students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.

You know, as much as people like to say that there's no one good or decent left in the world, this proves otherwise. That was so sweet. It also goes to show that all the youth today aren't the evil parent killing, binge drinking, drug addicts that everyone shows on the news. I love stories like this.... Thanks RecordCollector

Hey Mr. Biggs.... I came on the site today to post about what happened last night at my book study too, but you beat me to it! I didn't have something quite that interesting, but i did pick out a few key points.
1. On page 221, paragrph 10, it reads, "To this day religious leaders conspire to have Jehovah's Witnesses banned, persecuted, or punitively taxed. But as this prophecy reminds us, Jehovah sees all such treacherous dealing, and he will not let it go unpunished.
- A sister commented on how *obviously* this was alluding to the Witnesses in France being taxed and how unfair it was because they were the only organization targeted.... All in attendance (minus me) proceeded to go on and on about how the Witnesses are picked on by everyone... Very annoying
2. The following sentence said, "He will bring an end to all religions that misrepresent him and mistreat his people." Rev. 18:8 was cited. That reads, "That is why in one day her plagues will come, death and mourning and famine, and she will be completely burned with fire, because Jehovah God, who judged her, is strong." (NWT)
- Now, this sentence really made me think. Thay are applying this scripture to all other religions, however, read it again, and I think we can agree that it can be applied to the WTS. "misrepresent him" is found by saying all but 6 million people will be killed at Armageddon, out of love..... "mistreat his people" is obvious when one reads what happens to anyone who brings up a doubt to an elder, suposedly in confidence. Or, when the blame game is played by the GB and the publishers are portrayed as the ones who conjured up the notion of certain dates having significance. Sad......
Anyhow, those are two things that stuck out in my mind... what does everyone else think?

In my local paper today, in the letters to teh editor section, there were many letters regarding an article that ran last week about teh catholic church... the letters were all very interesting, but one woman in particular ended her letter this way:
"It is clear that only the Catholic Church can validly claim the ecclesiastical, doctrinal and historical connection to the church in the Scriptures."
Pretty interesting..... Wonder if she has ever talked to a JW. hahahaha

I watched it.... the whole thing. You know what? I don't know if she is really good at putting on an act, or if she was being genuine, but i was on her side last night.... During the whole scandal, i was like, "Well if she had used her brain to begin with...." But last night I really had some sympathy for her.. I guess sometimes things like that do happen, even if you have the best morals in the world.
Anyhow, I did think her crying bouts were a bit dramatic. But, that one time when the sound system got messed up and she made that "Linda???" comment, it was great. Made me laugh. All in all, I thought it was worth my time watching it, even though the ending was very abrupt.
