Statistics indicate that the number of offenders who repeat their crimes after being put to death is quite small.

by haujobbz in.
im asking this because lately in the uk 2 girls were murdered that were only 12 yrs old and now 59% population of the uk want the death penalty reinstated.. i assume you already have the death penalty in the usa, but do you think it is effective reducing 1st degree murder and potential child molesters, would you like to see the death penalty removed in the united states or not.. i wonder if the death penalty will be reinstated in the uk what do you think, personally i dont think it will maybe the politicians are afraid they wont get as many votes.

Are You Influenced By Looks?
by jack2 inon friday night i watched a report by abc tv's john stossel (in the normal 20/20 time slot) that dealt with how humans are influenced by looks.
it was a re-broadcast, and even though this was the second time i've seen it it was still fascinating.
to demonstrate whether we are influenced by appearance, several scenarios were set up, involving people considered attractive and those considered more 'plain'.

Here are some standard responses I use for replying to compliments. Very occasionally I do get compliments on my looks, but most often it's on my skills--drumming, programming, conversation, something like that. Sometimes I agree, and sometimes, as in the case of looks, I personally do not think I measure up to what the person is saying. so here's what I say:
- Well, thank you!
- I appreciate you saying so.
- It's nice of you to say so.
- It's good of you to notice.
- You think so? Cool, thanks!
- (Tongue in cheek, with a twinkly eye) You're too kind, too kind.
- (In the case of good job performance) Teamwork, man. Just doin' my part, but thanks for noticing.
- (If I personally don't agree with the assessment) I'm so glad to know you think so!
And, when I'm with someone who has a good sense of humor:
"You did an outstanding job on that, dude."
"Man, I'm glad somebody besides me knows that." (spoken with a straight face and a twinkle in my eye) -

<----------- 5'8"
5'8" is just tall enough
Mmm, talk that stuff to me, Grits!
I'm influenced by appearance, too, but generally in the opposite direction from what we're talking about here. Not appearance as an attractive feature, but appearance as in facial expression and body language. If the person is quite attractive physically, my experience has been that most of the time they have come to expect favorable treatment as a result. They are used to getting their way, used to being the center of attention, used to getting what they want with minimal effort put forth to earn it.
That's just a social dynamic at work, I know, but I generally go for the people of average appearance. Probably, that's because my appearance is average. Whatever; it works for me. I have no patience to deal with egotism.

Blood Transfusions and Pedophilia
by Lee Elder inajwrb was approached early on about working together on these issues.
we took a hard look and opted out for ethical and pragmatic reasons.
though the issues share a common thread (child abuse), they have to be approached in different ways.

Lello, Lee,
that Jehovah's Witnesses should not have the right to refuse a blood transfusion
I was disturbed when I read this statement in your opening post. I have followed and supported your work since you started it--I was one of those you mention who still clung to the JW belief on blood after leaving, until your research enlightened me--and the statement above is not in harmony with the reasonable stance I have come to expect from you.
This subsequent quote presents an altogether different position:
No one in AJWRB wants to force blood on adult Jehovah's Witnesses. We do want physicians to take reasonable steps to insure that they are making an informed choice. We want physicians to question the validity of the WTS wallet sized advanced directive because some JWs sign them under duress and in an emergency actually would prefer to receive blood if their doctors assure them confidentiality.
I believe I'm safe in assuming that the latter is what you meant by the former. Please correct me, and elaborate, if I'm wrong. Because Jehovah's Witnesses--adult witnesses--should absolutely have the right to refuse blood transfusion, just as they should have the right to refuse prescriptions, surgery, and anything else proposed to be done to their bodies.
It's good to hear from you. Long time now see.

Brothers told to stop being wasteful!
by dmouse ini wonder what the real reason is behind this plea from the wbts.
perhaps it is more evidence of a desire to downsize?.
but they can't downsize the printing works if the brothers are being wasteful!

I want them to come back again with that claim from a few years ago, that it's expensive to make CDs and people ought to donate a hundred bucks or so for them.

Interesting Conversation
by CC Ryder ini had an interesting conversation at work yesterday while on break.
two work mates of mine started to talk about the jw missionaries who were taken captive in the philipines.
one guy didn't understand why they would take a jw hostage.

Man, I long to have a conversation like this. I really would like to be able to talk to someone and make a point that gets them thinking, especially a real JW. But no JWs ever call at my place, even when I'm at work! Where are they? This is Dallas, man! When I was still deluded, I visited JWs in Houston a lot. They had problems with covering their entire service territory in two weeks' time, and worried a lot about how they were going to get in the requisite service time without annoying their targets to the point of hostilities.
Seems things are not so tough, here in the other Texas big city.

Polyamorous/Open Relationships
by LucidSky inbut what makes this social taboo still unacceptable by many even today?
we'll define polyamory as a sexual or romantic relationship involving more than two persons during the same time period.
all persons involved understand this up front.

There may be a whole lot more depth to Stephen Stills "Love the One You're With" than we could ever have imagined!
Don't forget Janis Joplin's exhortation to "Get It While You Can", which, I believe, preceded CSN's by a year or so (the album "Pearl")

I NEED your advice!!!!! Please reply!
by worldly girl inok here's the deal..... i've not had much to do w/ my parents since jan '02 when my mother and i got into over her force feeding my 3 year old the "troof".
when i respectfully ask her on behalf of myself and my non jw husband, to respect us enough to let us teach our child about religion.... her response was "well if you don't want her around our religion, then don't bring her around us".
and during the course of this conversation she stated this in the most hateful of tones at least 4 or 5 times to both me and my husband, in front of our daughter.... well i was furious.... that she would say such a thing and openly chose to have nothing to w/ my daughter.. without being given an ultimatum<sp> to choose.

It could be worse, hon. They could be shunning you. Sounds like you're the one doing the shunning. Are you sure that's in keeping with your goals? It might do your perspective some good to watch the movie, "Terms of Endearment".
