I am glad I don't worry about that anymore.

Hotel Discounts, at conventions. Oh how we fooled ourselves!
by free2beme ini honestly thought, when i was a witness, that there was a special discount at hotels when i went to them at conventions.
not just a simple special that can be given to anyone, but rather an extra special discount that was negotiated with the watchtower society.
well that is not the case, i used to work in the hotel industry for a short while and we did conventions for everyone from religious organizations to clubs.

Society readjusted their thinking on this matter in the mid-90s. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/111303/1942214/post.ashx#1942214

WT filters and why people don't see what's right in front of them
by Lady Lee inmany of us find it hard to understand why we didn't see/read/understand what was right in front of us all along.
we get frustrated with those who are still in who can't see what we have discovered.. i think i just found a similar reaction.. i've been playing an on-line game called luxor.
i've been playing this for months now.

Excellent post.
Reminds me of one of my first cases of independent thinking. I did not agree with the society's view on marriage for resurrected people after Armegeddon. I unfortunately voiced this to a goody-two-shoes MS who "corrected my thinking." Or so he thought. I knew they were bass-ackwards on it. And they thought so too, a few years later.
I pose the question to the MS, reminding him I had the Society's new view several years ago. He said I was still wrong for running ahead the Slave. Condemnation for logic.
The beginning of the end for me.

No doubt, mate. No doubt. I respect your advice.
I want to make 10,000 posts before Armegeddon. Can't get suspended for getting on people's cases. Wouldn't be cricket, as you guys say.

Looking glass and wombat:
Thank you for your concern expressed through you comments. I do agree that I am going to let him sit where he is now. Reading all of our comments, any forum member can see what the point is, and decide for themselves what went on. That was my goal.
Wombat:
I am skinny, too, but they don't follow me around the department stores because of it!

If you were applying for a job that involved public speaking...
by DanTheMan inwould you mention your experience as a student in the tms during the interview process?.
today i had my second interview for a position that, from time to time, will involve giving presentations to various groups within the company.
i know that it's something i can do, but other than a speech class at community college that i took probably 5 or 6 years ago, i don't really have any other experience besides the tms to let them know about.. i was an ace on the theocratic ministry school, people really loved it when i gave talks, i was good at it!

Hope it goes well. I'd never think of bringing the topic of Jehovah's Witnesses into a job interview unless I didn't want the job.
Sabotage yourself, eh?

Yes.
Most people would frown on a man fighting a woman in any circumstance except absolute self-defense. So, when part of your story includes you wanting to fight the person, it would make you look very bad if you did did not state that you both were male.
The race would not be necessary, however.
Your choice to include it, as well as your obvious dodging of my comments about your agenda, coupled with the tenor of your response (It's my post, and I'll cry if I want to, cry if I want to, etc.), make your attitude very clear.
As I said before, there are other websites, and on this particular website, there are other forums, that are more suited for people who think like you (in whatever varying degrees).

Big claims made that simply arn't true
by drew sagan ina number of posts on the board have got me thinking back to the time when i first became aquainted with jehovhah's witnesses.
many things that i was told (an probably no doubt many of you) where the ramblings of people are so dedicated to their religious system that it clouds all basic judgement.
here are some of the things i was told by certain members (mostly elders) that have panned out to be actual lies.

In the short time I've been here the best phrase that I have learned is "cognitive dissadance".( I hope that I spelt that correctly.)
Close enough:
dissonance.
It is so applicable to what most of us have experienced directly and/or indirectly:

rock climbing
by aoxo inany rock climbers in here?
when i was a jw it was frowned upon very much in the surrounding cong.
so one wanted to do it with me because the elders (who didn't know what the heck rock climbing was) didn't think that it was safe and that it was more of a thrill sport like bungy jumping.

Ya know, if they just mentioned stuff, expressed a thought (concern), and left it alone, that would be one thing.
But they go on and on about this stuff, and gettin' up in people's business, and making "rules" about shit. Arrrrgh!!!
Alaska has about 6 months of sticking it where the sun don't shine, right?
