any rock climbers in here? when i was a jw it was frowned upon very much in the surrounding cong. so one wanted to do it with me because the elders (who didn't know what the heck rock climbing was) didn't think that it was safe and that it was more of a thrill sport like bungy jumping. there never was even an article in the W&A that addressed top rope rock climbing. there was one that talked about solo rock climbing (without ropes or protection) as dangerous but never top ropeing (safety ropes and harnesses). when i tried to tell people in the cong. that statistically it was safer than flying or driving a car because of all the equiptment involved it felt like they considered me a trouble maker and didn't want to talk about it. anyone else have similar problems with this sport?

My husband is a die hard rock climber and has been for many years. And yes it was very "frowned upon" but he always did it anyways.(I've got to get him registered on here so he can post too)
Yeah statistically it's far worse for you to go skiing. But so many JW's go skiing for the WTS to "frown" upon it. We now live in Alaska in the "Interior" not much rock but lots of wide open wilderness to ride your snow machines! Besides the tons of other things to do here...skiing/snow boarding, ice fishing/fishing,Ice climbing, shoot'n,shoot'n and more shoot'n,kayaking, polyamy(ha ha, he wishes)oh and apostatizing.LOL! He's in heaven livin' the Alaskan dream. And the WTS can go stick it where the sun don't shine!
By the way welcome,we're new out of the bOrg as well.

This Sunday's WT study says that recreation that risks your life is "not appropriate." They show a picture of a guy ice climbing.

mmm I wonder how rock climbing affects Jehovah's Everlasting Life Insurance Policy? Does one get a third resurrection if found dead in gumshoes and powderbag?
unc who argued that rockclimbing and scuba diving were much safer than my everyday occupation (scuba/spear fishing could also be said to be providing for ones family but rocks are strictly designed for throwing at bad people or striking with a rod

My cong. did not like a brother having a motorcycle, reminding him about the blood issue if he had an accident.
Don't do anything fun, or takes away time, or cost $. yeah, right

Ya know, if they just mentioned stuff, expressed a thought (concern), and left it alone, that would be one thing.
But they go on and on about this stuff, and gettin' up in people's business, and making "rules" about shit. Arrrrgh!!!
Alaska has about 6 months of sticking it where the sun don't shine, right?

Welcome to the board aoxo and Morwen! When I was younger me and a few of my buddies really got into free climbing. We never top roped, mostly because it was too safe (I know stupid youth). Anyway, we had to keep our activities secret for fear of the elders, so I know exactly how you feel. Man, when I look back on those days, well I wish I had been a tad bit smarter. Now I stick to safer endeavors like paintball, flyfishing, and backpacking.
