I've recently been exploring a few different churches now that I'm outta the dubs. I have got choked up emotionally at every service I've been too. Something about the music and singing that opened me up emotionally unlike anything I've experienced as a dub, (except occasionally when I was a teen during closing songs at district assemblies.) Had to hold myself back from blubbering my eyes out. It kinda made me realise that I am holding a lot of shit inside me at an emotional level and could really do with some healing. I fully agree that the JW meetings are emotionally sterile and lacking love.

Although non-trinitarian, I actually enjoyed the emphasis on Jesus, although I did squirm a bit at some of the song lyrics and a few things said that portrayed Jesus a little too highly for my liking. One church in particular I won't be going back to because the speaker, although good, basically made out that Jesus was Yahweh. But I intend to return to one church in particular. It was a little less 'rock n roll' and more relaxed and a chap there really impressed me with his friendliness and personal attention, showing me all around the place and having a coffee with me afterwards. And Lord knows I could really do with some new friends as its been a real struggle since leaving the JW's.

Generally I have been extremely impressed with the kindness and friendliness shown by people at the revival type churches. It has made me realise that they really are nice, caring people who love God and Christ (or so it seems). I'm trying not to get too hung up about the fact that they have a few false doctrines because I have come to accept that there is no one true Christian denomination on earth. They all just have a mix of true and false.

LOL Seattle, your analogy between believing in unicorns and a rational choice to belief that there must be a Creator is not a valid comparison. More like a rather silly straw-man. There are solid, scientific, rational reasons for believing that there is a God. Many of the greatest scientific minds on earth today profess to believe in a creator, and they base that decision on sound reasoning, not wishful thinking or religious bias. They may not believe that entity or mind is exactly as portrayed in the bible, but they accept that there must logically be some creative mind force much higher than ourselves. I'm sure you are obviously aware of those arguments, assuming you come from a JW/Christian background. If you aren't then I'd be happy to provide you with some information. On the other hand there is absolutely no valid scientific reason to believe in unicorns, which is a product of fictional imagination.

I can understand people being agnostic, but atheists? There is no such thing really. Everyone believes in something higher than ourselves, even Seattleniceguy. Atheism is the highest form of bravado.

like so many people, i'm (very carefully)trying to convey the obvious "truth" about the wtb&ts to some of the members of my family.

is there any key point that "stands out" in your memory as pivotal in the opening of your eyes?

or any particular point that may have opened the eyes of your loved ones?

Pride in Statistics. How well are the JW's doing, really?

this week's study article is: people "out of all the languages" hear the good news (december 1, 2005 wt) .

and they state "eagerly embracing that commission, jehovah's witnesses are active in 235 lands, distributing literature in more than 400 languages.

a recurring theme with jehovah's witnesses is pride in statistics; the volume of literature they place, the number of lands where their version of the good news is preached, their growth, and the number of translations available.

The book 'Captives of a Concept' makes the excellent point that there is no such thing as an uninspired prophet. The Society has said on a number of occasions that it has acted as a modern day prophet, yet it claims it was never inspired! Go figure. They can't have it both ways LOL.

The 'this generation' change of understanding in 1995 + when I saw the accompanying change in the box on the inside cover of the Awake describing it's purpose. I thought; "WTF! Hold on a minute, this meets the definition of a false prophecy according to Deut 18...it was just speculation the whole time after all....if they could get this so wrong then I wonder what else they have got wrong...I wonder if the whole 1914 teaching is wrong too?".

And then the NGO thing really did it for me, especially the fact that they wrote entire Awake articles centred around certain UN anniversaries and events and evidently submitted those articles to the DPI.

I walked away with my head held up.
