"Just as all members of ancient Israel formed one "servant," so also all anointed Christians on earth at any one time form one "faithful and discreet slave."
Whatever.
There is no such thing as a true Christian who wasn't anointed. Hey Watchtower, show us one single scripture that says otherwise! This idea that there are 'anointed Christians' and 'non-anointed Christians' is a complete myth. God gives his holy spirit in equal measure to all true Christians.
And if all members of ancient Israel formed one "servant" and the parallel is only to the "anointed" class, then where does that leave 99% of JW's? Who are they paralleled to in ancient times? The pagan nations?
And how can all of ancient Israel parallel the 144,000 when Revelation 7 says that the 144,000 come OUT OF the twelve tribes of Israel??
And how can all of ancient Israel parallel the 144,000 when the 144,000 are all priests whereas not all of ancient Israel were priests? -

Expect JW's to actually grow over the next few years
by yaddayadda inthey had, what, an 1.6% worldwide annual publisher growth increase last service year?
contrary to many predictions, i think they will better that this service year (ending 30 september).
and i think there will be ongoing increases for the next few service years.

I'm quite sure that they will. They had, what, an 1.6% worldwide annual publisher growth increase last service year? Contrary to many predictions, I think they will better that this service year (ending 30 September). And I think there will be ongoing increases for the next few service years.
Why? Because of the increasing tension in the middle East. The Iraq situation is going to go on and there is a storm brewing over Iran that has the potential to lead to another world war.
The US will definitely strike at Iran militarily & they are likely to do it before Bush's tenure as President ends at the end of 2008. Many commentators are predicting it. America knows it made a big mistake in letting North Korea develop nuclear technology and they don't intend to let it happen again. The US could not afford to let Saddam Hussein develop nuclear weaponry capability and they certainly cannot afford to let Iran develop it. It's as simple as that really, despite what else you hear about pretexts and US imperialism and geo/political/oil ambitions.
There are also increasing reports and media attention being given to claims that Al Qaeda has very probably already become the world's 11th nuclear power, or is very close to it. If you bone up on this subject it is frightening to read about. The horse has already bolted. They already have the ability to deploy at least a 'dirty nuke' (which is not a full nuclear explosion but nearly as devastating) on US soil. Al Qaeda actually has a huge and diabolical advantage over the US; you cannot retaliate against an unseen enemy with no geographic location to strike against, like any typical country or state has. And what sets Al Qaeda apart is that they have made it plain that they have the desire, will and intent to actually do it. This makes them a unique and practically unbeatable new enemy like nothing before. It's a whole new playing field for the US. All of the US's military might and vast nuclear Arsenal means nothing against such a new enemy because it will only take 1 devastating nuclear explosion on US soil to bring the US to it's knees.
A lot of authorities on this subject are saying it is only a matter of when, not if! Don't take my word for it, do some research for yourself.
The point is: The increasing awareness and media attention being focused on such frightening future scenarios is going to increasingly excite JW's belief over the next few years to the effect that the end is right around the corner, like never before!
JW's live for this stuff. Their loyalty to the Watchtower Society is not so much about truth or Christianity - it is about belief that Armageddon is near and their survival depends on allegiance to the Watchtower. The more they are convinced the end is near, the more the organisation grows.
Despite all the years of disconfirmation, doubts, and disillusionment, these scary world developments on the horizon are what will keep JW's growing in the next few years. More inactive and fringe JW's will be scared into coming back and more people worried about the future will start studying. Remember, JW's are not the only ones expecting the end of the world to happen soon...there is a huge increase in membership of modern style religions, who are more and more excited by developments in the Middle East and honestly believe something incredible is about to happen soon. I believe the JW's will experience a similar trend but on a much smaller scale.
I hope I am wrong, but with the world scene hotting up and nasty developments on the horizon, don't expect the JW's to disappear soon.

A couple of comparisons: the WT of today vs the early 1970s
by Skimmer inthe other day i happened to make my monthly stop at the local fast food joint when i usually borrow one of the community newspapers for an afternoon read.
this time around i see a couple of wt magazines.
as always, my concerns for my fellow man caused me to grab these toxic items for a later meal -- a meal fed to my cross cut shredder at home.

AWAKE! magazine says in the foreword "..Most important, this magazine builds confidence in the Creator's promise of a peaceful and secure new world that is about to replace the present wicked, lawless system of things."
THE WATCHTOWER says "...It comforts all peoples with the good news that God's Kingdom will soon destroy those who oppress their fellow men and that it will turn the earth into a paradise."
"comforts all peoples"...HA!...yes, how comforting indeed for all peoples to learn that Jehovah is going to wipe out 99% of all peoples at Armageddon. Such wonderful, comforting, good news for all peoples. -

Japan closes 638 Congregations!!!!! Why???
by Witness 007 injapan since the 1970''s has had amazing publisher increases!
every year the number of witnesses shot up by many thousands.
this peaked in 1998, since then the number of witnesses and congregations has continued to drop!.
-
yaddayadda
The number of pioneers has dropped off massively in Japan in recent years. It's mainly because the Japanese economy ain't what it used to be and less Japdubbies can afford to work part-time. The drop off in congregations, publishers is probably related to that also.

Is the "marking" policy of the Society defunct or still officially used?
by yaddayadda inin my over 30 years as a jw, i honestly can't recall ever hearing about anyone who was being officially "marked" pursuant to the society's "marking" policy based on 2 thess 3:14. .
in fact, i havn't read anything about their strange "marking" policy in years.
this makes me wonder if the society still has confidence in it and still officially endorses it?

What sort of crap reasoning is this from that 1999 QFR (thanks Blondie):
"3. On quite a different scale of gravity, Paul wrote to the Corinthians about one who practices gross sin and is not repentant. Such unrepentant sinners had to be excluded from the congregation. The "wicked" man had to be handed over to Satan, as it were. Thereafter, loyal Christians were not to mix with such wicked ones; the apostle John urged Christians not even to greet them. (1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 John 9-11) This, however, does not fit the counsel of 2 Thessalonians 3:14 either."
WTF??? Who the hell wrote this on the writing department? Did they even bother to check the context of 2 John 9-11. The articles goes on and on about the context of first and second Thessalonians but totally ignores the context of 2 John.
Hey, you morons at Watchtower headquarters: The apostle John DID NOT urge Christians "not even to greet" persons unrepentant of a sin under 1 Cor 5: 1-13!!
2 John 9-11 is counsel to not say a greeting to anyone who "comes to you and does not bring this teaching,..." (v9), ie "..everyone that pushes ahead and does not remain in the teaching of the Christ..."
So it is only genuine apostates from Christian truth who are to be totally shunned, not persons disciplined under 1 Cor 5.
The Society's reasoning on this utterly woeful and capricious.

Thanks, AlltimeJeff I would love to see a scan of the pages in the new Organised book that discuss marking. Care to post a scan?
The Society have never said it's wrong to lift weights, geez. Watchtower Headquarters even has a little gym. -

RE: Taking predictions for the 2007 memorial
by cultswatter inthat time is fast approaching when the wts will reveal the partaker numbers for 2007.. if you want to make a prediction then please go to this thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/133255/1.ashx.
40 to 59 = master of the crown and cross award.
100 to 199 = master of the pyramid award.

Wot do those numbers signify - the variance from the actual number of reported partakers?
How many were there last memorial?
I predict 8975. -

Does the WTS teach that Jehovah is only "Heavenly Father" to the 144k?
by yaddayadda ini don't know if it is my imagination or what, but i've started to notice something odd in recent wts literature (besides all the other odd things): .
i am struggling to find any mention in recent watchtower articles and publications of jehovah being referred to as the "heavenly father" of jehovah's witnesses!
for example, in the upcoming october 22-28 watchtower study article entitled "your father is merciful" (quoting from luke 6:36), god is not once referred to as "heavenly father" throughout the entire article!
-
yaddayadda
Are you sure those references are to "all" JW's?
I did a search on Luke 6:35 and these two quotes came up in Watchtower's going back to 1990:
*** w99 10/15 10 Learning the Excelling Way of Love ***
Since our heavenly Father sets such a magnificent example for us, we should strive to be kind and helpful to all. By doing so, we can prove ourselves ‘sons of our loving heavenly Father.’—Luke 6:35; Matthew 5:45.
*** w97 12/1 16 'Continue Forgiving One Another Freely' ***
As a little boy tries to be just like his father, we, as children whom Jehovah dearly loves, should want to become like our forgiving heavenly Father. How it must delight Jehovah’s heart to look down from the heavens and see his earthly children trying to be like him by forgiving one another!—Luke 6:35, 36; compare Matthew 5:44-48.
Ok, now go back and re-read that quoted portion in my first post from the new book on Jesus.
Questions: So if all JW's can prove themselves "sons of our loving heavenly Father", as per the 1999 Watchtower quote above, then why does the new book say that they only become such after the millennial reign?
And if all JW's can cry to Jehovah like a little boy cries to his father and we are his "earthly children", according to the 1997 Watchtower quote above, then why does the Society teach that only the 144,000 cry "Abba, Father" and are God's sons and children as per Romans 8:15,16 and Galatians 4:6,7?
Totally messed up and contradictory. Go figure!
