Argh. I echo Brigid's sentiments exactly.
Just this last week I had a terrible interaction with my (male) friend. We are working through it because we really value each other's friendship but it stemmed from my wierd ingrained JW-style view of there ALWAYS having to be "something" between a male and female. Sometimes I wish I could just relax more about stuff like that.
It's such a self-centered attitude I have that every guy I am alone with must be after me. I logically know this is not true but still get nervous...
I am so glad to know that others also are dealing with this. I thought everyone else exjw or not just automatically was at ease with everyone else...

Marriage vows: What the...?
by under_believer ini, [name], do take you, [name], to be my lawfully wedded [husband/wife], to love, honor [bride: and deeply respect], for as long as we both shall live together on earth under god's marital arrangement.. ummm... what?
so romantic, so meaningful.
is it just me, or is that marriage vow right out of the frickin' twilight zone?

I was wandering through the Botanical Gardens in Phoenix this year when I head the unmistakable sermonizing of a JW wedding.
All the "respect this respect that" immediately caught my ear.
I felt like running through their wedding and telling them all the real truth...
-that would have been fantastic. For me and some bored wedding guests. Would have ruined the bride and groom's day. Maybe later when their marriage fell apart or later when the wife was totally in depression over having to be married to someone who won't have oral sex with her (yeah this is melodramatic) and makes her cook every meal for him they would have looked back on the girl who "ruined" their wedding and laughed.
Anyway.
Yeah those vows are the lamest. Do they let you use your own vows at the KH? -

So what exactly IS the unforgivable sin...?
by Kudra in.
apologies if this has been covered before... .
but is it apostacy --- not being repentant for anything (no matter what the "sin" is) --- saying *something* (i forget what) about the "holy spirit"- this last one seems sorta familiar... .

Oh yeah,
"grieving the holy spirit"
forgot that phrase. Never knew what it meant. So- you're causing the "holy spirit" grief. Sooo- if the holy spirit is not an entity that can have feelings -as the WTBTS teaches- how can you cause it grief? I'm sure they have a way around that one.
thanks everyone for your good answers...

The "trash man" was hot. I don't usually look at guys in "muscle shirts" but this guy was just normal in kind of a all-dressed-in-black way. I shall lurk this place til I GET HIM.
Just kidding.
One quick story: I did speed-dating a week ago and had a uncomfortable interchange with this guy who was belittling my double marathon I have in a month by saying "oh, it's no big deal- I just rode a marathon on my bike (WTF?) and was totally fine afterwards."
I looked at him and laughed. and I think it hurt his ego. awww.
so I KEEP running into him (at this coffee shop) and the first time I ran into him I was like, "Hey! It's the guy who biked a marathon!" And he said "...yeah, and you're riding your bike..." So I bend over to lock my bike up, still talking, and when I look up he has high tailed it down the road...
Hilarious. I keep seeing him everywhere. I am his plague of locusts.
I can never win with guys.
Send positive vibes to me and the trash man.

Forgot to add- I have just ever read "pop" Buddhist books, so I have the general idea of Buddhism but nothing more.

ARTHUR (I don't have cool font stuff on Firefox...:( )
The center is the Tara Mahayana Center but the type of tradition they follow is the New Kadampa Tradition.
We are studying a book (aarrrgh! a bookstudy in an old kingdom hall!) that was written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso called The Eight Steps to Happiness: The Buddhist Way of Loving Kindness.
The classes I think are basic Buddhist- like seeing beyond this endless cycle of suffering, getting true happiness and (the part that I don't buy) getting on the way to becoming "one of the enlightened ones" -like these ones that we say prayers to. The prayers were a little hard for me too.

Very interesting Bebu,
So this is like when the JWs say that all the good charitable works that the churches of "the world" do -like run soup kitchens, blood drives etc- are driven by Satan...?
hmm. -

Hi Sparky!
I'm really giving it a try. I actually have to fork over money to stay with stuff- I can't stick with the "drop-in" classes. There is a nice Buddhist nun who is the instructor and while I like the Buddhist philosophy I just can't take reincarnation, and some other supernatural stuff seriously... So I don't know if I could

aaargh! station break! there is this hot guy here in this coffee shop that I always see!!! He just came and tossed out his trash in the garbage can near me- I think it's love!!!

ANYway. I don't know if I could be a Practicing Buddhist (and she went over the differences) because I couldn't ever believe that if I held onto negative energy that I will come back as a red howling demon... (or something like that).
Sigh, I just want to be happy.
