ok long story short i was baptized at 17 (because i felt pressured into it), and i was df about 2yrs ago i believe (i'm 27 now).

i wasn't at the final meeting, or any meeting about my dfing.

i had an elder call me twice at work and tell me that there was meeting that night.

Welcome Confused!

You've found a really good board. It's filled with all sorts! I was raised in the bOrg too, and can understand where you are coming from with these feelings of doubt and anger and aloness and maybe a little guilt. You'll find a lot of sympathetic ears and when you're ready a lot of them can help you with spirtuality on a chatty basis...or if you choose to go the other route via atheism or agnoticisim...well we've got our fair share of those too. What I'm trying to say is there is a lot of variety here. You'll find that shoulder to cry on in cyberspace, and you'll find lots of people here to share your victories too.

So welcome aboard the handbasket!

at your place?

it is dang cold here today - just above 0* f at sunrise and no more than mid teens for the day.

the whole week sounds like more of the same.... yuck!.

We had snow here yesterday...snowflakes the size of small buicks...and it was below freezing...and then it warmed up just a little and then it turned to rain...and then it all froze...so it was fun driving home last night. And now it's in the 40s...so I give up. I like consistency. This...is not consistency.

my spouses grandfather is in the hospital and only has a couple days left to live.

last night we were there and my in-laws decided this would be a good time to preach to the their fleshly relatives, as they are the only ones in the family that are witnesses.

my father-in-law has not been active in the witnesses, just attends meetings, so his ability to explain their faith is a little on the weak side.

My mother couldn't be further OUT of the religion and she still says "Jehovah this and Jehovah that" and she told me one time that she still believes that the JW taught her the truth. I'm thinking that she meant because they read the bible so much but I'm not sure and honestly I don't want to ask her. I'm sure she stills sees me as a bible-abiding citizen when it couldn't be farther from the truth.

I tell her I don't believe and she still uses that Jehoba mindset of LA LA LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

Everyone else knows I don't believe anymore. Which is a good thing...I'm getting my non-believing family back. This is a good thing...cause they're crazy and it helps me feel better about myself. ;)

i remember in one of my bethel entrants school classes, the instructor commenting on the events that went down in genesis chapter 3 and commenting that one of the reasons why the serpent was so persuasive was because he "evidently" partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.

because he had taken such a course, he could persuasively convince eve to do the same.

i can't remember what source material he used to support this assertion.

I always felt that they were naive and innocent. After all, Adam and Eve knew nothing of deception or evil. Here was this snake saying that god doesn't want you to eat this fruit cause then you'll be just like him...and who wouldn't want to be just like the very thing that created you? After all, the lie was just being invented at this point....

Can you say unfair advantage here? Here, lets give the two humans a test...but they have no knowledge on how to defend themselves against this trial. I know...I'm being over-simplistic in a way, but then again we are talking about talking snakes and eating fruit that will make you like "God."

even if that were the case, who would drink a glass of water with 1% poison content?

As I was reading through these fallacies of argumentation I was struck by just how many the JWs employ to try to convert or keep its peeps in line.

Ad hominim - Attacking the individual instead of the argument. Appeal to force - The hearer is told that something bad will happen to him if he does not accept the argument. Appeal to pity - The hearer is urged to accept the argument based upon an appeal to emotions, sympathy, etc. Appeal to the popular - the hearer is urged to accept a position because a majority of people hold to it. Appeal to tradition - trying to get someone to accept something because it has been done or believed for a long time. Begging the Question - Assuming the thing to be true that you are trying to prove. It is circular. Cause and Effect - assuming that the effect is related to a cause because the events occur together. Circular Argument - see Begging the Question Equivocation - The same term is used in an argument in different places but the word has different meanings. False Dilemma - Two choices are given when in actuality there could be more choices possible. Genetic Fallacy - The attempt to endorse or disqualify a claim because of the origin or irrelevant history of the claim Guilt by Association - R ejecting an argument or claim because the person proposing it likes someone is disliked by another. Non Sequitar - Comments or information that do not logically follow from a premise or the conclusion. Poisoning the well - Presenting negative information about a person before he/she speaks so as to discredit the person's argument. Red Herring - The introduction of a topic not related to the subject at hand. Special Pleading (double standard) - Applying a different standard to another that is applied to oneself. Straw Man Argument - Producing an argument to attack that is a weaker representation of the truth. <sorry bout that...it entered before I was done posting>
