Some things really ticked me off at the meeting last night...
by wantarevolution in...aside from the snooze fest that was the "bible study", taken by a brother who was 5 minutes late - went 10 minutes over and obiously hadn't prepared shit for the meeting (this is the same brother that "encouraged" me to be 15 minutes early for all meetings to welcome people).
1) i had the no3 talk, about "christians helping the poor", no source material or anything.
i played it good, spoke about our duty to be good christians, and charitable to everyone, and how it is a conscience matter as to how we donate our money or charitable deeds.i even used a quote by mother theresa.

I was feeling particularly peeved at the whole of last night, and on the way home from the meeting, couldn't help but wonder why i hadn't done as i wanted, and gone to the beach with some friends and opened a bottle of wine. Perhaps next week
As long as you're in the JW religion, life will continue to pass you by.

No, God does NOT have the right to make rules for us - and here's why . . . .
by nicolaou inreading through reniaa's latest topic i found the following sorts of comments from believers and unbelievers alike.
i think they show how habits of thought run most easily along the well grooved and often travelled ruts in our minds.
we need to question these 'obvious truths' more often .

THe purpose of rules is to enforce behavior. It doesn't make sense for God to create humans as free will agents, but expect them to follow a set pattern of behavior.
It does make sense, however, for other humans to say that God has certain rules, and to take on the authority to enforce them. Perfect sense.

Hi Jerkovah! (nice name)
What ever you do, DON'T let them in the door. Wear a huge smile and tell them you'll come talk to them when you're ready. Tell them "you've been a little depressed lately." Not many elders want to go through the trouble to "encourage" a depressed person--what a drag!!! ;)

Faith necessary to please God is a great mind control trick to encourage gullibility
by frankiespeakin inthe way i see it faith; as used in the bible and specifically in the book of hebrews is a powerful tool used to encourage gullibility, and strongly discourages critical examination.. "and without faith it is impossible to please god, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.".
it is of course true that when those words were first put down in writing there wasn't the vast accumulation of scientific knowledge we have in our modern times, there wasn't any telescopes, microscopes, atomic accelerators, satellites, or serious studies in anthropology & archeology.
and so faith in an unseen biblical deity was not met with the huge amounts of critical data, in fact for a sizable portion it was forced upon them with the threat of torture or loss of life(such as inquisitions,& being put to the question).. back in the days proceeding from when the official cannon was sanctified by both the politically&religiously minded early church fathers with the states approval or support "faith" as described in the book of hebrews became not only a necessity for future benefits, but became a life or death matter as the church through its political maneuverings became more and more powerful.. so as i see it "faith" or uncritical acceptance of a jealous and murderous and contradictorally loving deity is losing ground as a mind controlling device, but is still being used by those of the who preach the word for a livelihood but with less and less success on the more informed.. .

I have, more than once too :D
As most of us here have. If there is one thing that's abundantly clear by scripture, it's this: God doesn't need to give any explanation for anything. He requires faith, demands it even. And, despite supposedly offering abundant proof for his existence and will throughout scripture, he no longer has any interest in doing so nowadays. His believers have since used faulty reasoning to show that faith is not what it is. With such a clean definition offered in the Bible, it's mind-numbing that people actually fool themselves into believing that faith is NOT the absence of questioning. Questions seek evidence of fact. Faith is a means to maintain belief in the absence of evidence.
Unless, of course, faith to you just means some kind of fuzzy, good feeling you get when you think of the Supreme Being actually caring about you. In that case, your idea of faith is completely contrary to what the Bible says and the actual definition.

I disagree, those that faith have have no issues in questioning or being questioned.
Illogical, captain. With questioning, there is no need for faith. Read the Good Book more carefully.

Trying to plan a camping trip is exhausting!!
by AK - Jeff inmy eyes ache from looking at hundreds of websites and trying to find information.. i am looking at several neighboring states.
the problem i keep finding is that some of the sites tell you certain things, others don't.
all i want is three 'peaceful' nights in an out of the way place of quiet.

You'll easily fall into the trap of bringing along too much crap (it rhymes!).
