  in a recent thread about an nfl player being allowed to return to play after being convicted and serving time for a felony, it was suggested that maybe his ancestory played a part in his attitudes and actions.. those of you were playing along at home know the deal.... is it fair to lay blame on one's ancestors in how one acts in today's society?.

  i think not.... my ancestor's came here from scotland, when their lands were taken from them back home.

  they came here with nothing and had to start over in a land with next to nothing, eeking out an existance in the mountains of tn and nc, always struggling.

  And none of them would abuse helpless animals, either, I presume.

  Or helpless people.

  Because... we know having ancestors who were abused by other people has a direct correlation with abuse of animals today. Yep. Makes perfect sense.

  Yeah. I can't imagine any of my other black friends talking or acting like her.

  One thing I have learned this week. No matter how much I might think I have a friend in a black person, I will always be one of "them".

  You suffered those things despite, not because of, being White; I suffered those things because I'm Black.

  Snow, i cannot believe you simply don't understand why it's wrong to blame someone's crimes on their ancestry. You're not even blaming it on his upbringing, which, in fact, would be much more reasonable, since a person's upbringing can explain a lot. But you're taking it to the extreme, and saying that a man abuses animals because his ancestors were abused by white men.

  Snowbird: UC, Michael Vick's and my ancestors came to these shores in chains. They were subjugated and brutalized in the worst possible way, denied an education, stripped of their dignity. This spawned a legacy of apathy and self-loathing that characterizes many a Black family.

  Some have overcome and gone on to lead exemplary lives; others have foundered and fallen through the cracks. Vick's family was one of the latter, he spent his early childhood in a housing project known by the street name "Bad Newz." He is reported to have said that as a child he often went fishing, even when they weren't biting, just to escape the daily stress of the project.

  If these few facts I've presented to you doesn't show you how slavery contributed to Vick's (and others) delinquency, then you are the one in need of a reality check.

  There's a difference between "delinquincy" and someone finding enjoyment in inflicting pain on helpless animals.

  How about this: is a wife beater not responsible for beating his wife if he grew up in a trailer park?

  The subject of slavery, African-Americans, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights really bites, doesn't it?

  Yea, especially when it's not even the fucking ISSUE.
