Is Atheism a Form of Blind Faith?
by passwordprotected inif god is outside of nature and therefore cannot be proved or disproved by science, is atheism a form of blind faith?
after all, it cannot be defended on the basis of pure reason.. steven jay gould said;.
"science simply cannot by its legitimate methods adjudicate the issue of god's possible superintendence of nature.

To expand on this a little bit, Phillip K Dick said "reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."
Well, many people can stop believing in God, and magically, God goes away. He no longer plays a role in their life, and nothing that happens to them later on reveals him to them.
On the other hand, for some, God does not go away. They still feel something inside them, and he surfaces again, or reveals himself to them in some manner.
Who is right? Does God "go away" or not?
It doesn't fucking matter!
There may be a reality out there, a "truth," but it is out of our grasp.
And perhaps that's the best thing, because what would Man be capable of with absolute knowledge? Many good things, sure, but also many great bad things.
Sticking with the courage of you convictions is another way of exercising the cowardice of your mutability.

Excuse me, but your answer to the universe is also subject to number 1.
Daniel,
No. It is not. A self-existing God is not "nothing" but is the original something.
Your "original something" is no more logical or plausible than there being no God. And probably less so, since by your interpretation this "original something" has to fit in with what Middle Eastern tribes wrote down.
YOUR experience does not make God exist for EVERYONE ELSE.
God exists or not irrespective of anyone's perspective. This is simply using words to create alternate realities. Both cannot be correct, one must be in error. You do understand that God cannot both exist and not exist at the same time don't you?
Actually, no, I don't understand. It is just as plausible that God does and does not exist at the same time. Why? Because even if there is one true reality, we can never know it, because we only know reality through our own experience.
Thus, you may have constructed God, but for others he does not, or cannot, exist. It doesn't matter if he exists or not!

Likewise, atheists try hard to avoid the facts that are inherent in an atheist worldview, which are:
1. Something from Nothing
2. They know all things and are hence qualified to justify the creed "there is no God"
3. People that God has revealed himself to are liars.
Like the JW's, atheists practice self deception to an unprecedented degree and it doesn't seem to bother them if they are found out or not.
Excuse me, but your answer to the universe is also subject to number 1.
For number 2, change "there is no God" to "there is a God" and it also applies to you.
For number 3, nothing could be further from the truth. If you feel like athiests are calling you a liar, you have major issues. I for one, do not denigrate other people's spiritual experiences. However, and this is the entire fucking issue, YOUR experience does not make God exist for EVERYONE ELSE.

Bethelites and Athletes - are they the same?
by babygirl30 inforgive me if i sound completely cynical - but i have always wondered what the big deal with was brothers who are living at bethel!
i have known sisters that would give their right arm to be around them, snag one, and/or be able to say she is 'dating' a bethelite - as if that's the greatest thing in the world.
jw's from all over the world come to 'visit' them and they receive clothing, trips, food, boarding - all for free!

Society likes to create elites. Why? I have no freaking idea.

alone in the hse with opposite sex....is it crazy ??? or not??
by angel eyes inregarding being in the house with someone of opposite sex...thats a conscience thing too, the individual decides yet many claim that if they were seen in the house with someone of opposite sex they could stumble people..i think its them who have the problem, how can someone think the worse and make an accusation!?!?!
they are the ones with the problem and should be counselled, not the ones together.
its up to the individuals, we shouldnt have to take on other people consciences and be worried what others say...jehovah sees all things and at the end of the day we stand before jah's throne on judgment day not sister or brother so and so.

I know we have to use discernment and have a balance but really!!! do any of you feel sometimes its blown out of porportion?
Not at all. Clearly you have a corrupt heart and have been counseled for this in the past, and only want to smear Jah's faithful slave.

Your reply just does not follow from what I said. Re-read what I said. Better yet, let me re-word it: "JWs are not skeptical about there own religion. We are skeptical about their own religion, and even what is SAID about their own religion. I wish they were more like us."
So you can see, I didn't lament our reasoning ability at all. I emphasized it.
Farkel
Ah my bad. i must've read it hastily.

Chicago is the third largest city in the US. The metro area has over 10 million people. Chicago is very similar to New York.
We are on the shore of Lake Michigan and the city has the tallest buildings in the US. You may have heard of some of them? The Sears Tower? (Now Willis) John Hancock buildings? We have a public zoo that is on the lake shore--Lincoln Park Zoo. Navy Pier. The Planitarium, Field Museum, Art Institute--I could go on, but, there is so much to see and do just in the downtown area, one week would not be enough.
Chicago has Chinatown, Greektown, Koreatown, Rush Street area for major partying, the Magnificant Mile for shopping, State Street for all kinds of stuff. Water Tower for shopping, eating, and more.
The Olympics were to be held all within 10 minutes of the lake shore. The land was already purchased by the city and was an old hospital site. Which would have been the main site. The other sites would have been park district sites. The city has lots of parks and pools, etc.
As for unions and patronage, that is the Chicago way now. That would not change. But, people who are now unemployed and on welfare would at least be working and earning a living rather than sitting on their butts. The contractors and their politician buddies would still be lining their pockets. Just like now. Snow removal comes to mind.
I'm not saying Chicago isn't a large and vibrant city, but that beyond the city, what is there? International vacationers would look for more regional activities and destinations beyond just the city. They want an entire region to experience.
Anyway, I think Chicago would do better to host another World's Fair, rather than the Olympics. The World's Fair of 1893 was, likewise, very expensive and didn't turn much of a profit, but it had such an extraordinary impact on emerging industry, technology, art, culture and entertainment, that we still benefit from the effects to this day. In one sense, it was the celebration of how far western civilization had come since the discovery of the New World.
In contrast, the olympics are about sports, the supremacy of one nation's athletics over others, the generation of TV viewership, and commercialism.
