"We agree that there are many benefits to be gained from increased knowledge that institutions of higher learning can dispense. At the same time, we do not ignore the benefits society has received from men such as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, who had little or no formal education. We do not condemn the so-called higher education as such and reaffirm what we have stated before, that going to college is an individual matter. At the same time, we feel compelled to point out the hazards of the college environment.
First, although there may be exceptions, the thrust of college education is generally against faith in God and in favor of humanist philosophies.
Second, college education usually puts the emphasis on getting ahead in the world and attaining material success, contrary to the advice of Jesus and the apostle John.—Matthew 6:19-21, 25-34; 1 John 2:15, 16.
Third, the usual college environment fosters a spirit of independence and permissiveness, resulting in sexual immorality and drug misuse that may be difficult for many young people to resist. We encourage young people to continue acquiring knowledge, especially that found in the Bible because it leads to gaining everlasting life. (John 17:3) We also encourage them to cultivate the skills necessary to lead a useful, productive life with the emphasis on Jesus’ words at Matthew 6:33, to keep seeking first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness.
And fourth, the time is short. (Luke 21:34-36; Ephesians 5:15, 16) It can be spent most profitably in serving our Creator.—ED."

Awake = College Education, % of brain usage, where are these?
by drew sagan ini've heard that this is somewhere in the magazines, but i have no clue where.
also, does anybody know where (or even if) the watchtower ever fed off the idea that we only use a fraction of our brains, an idea that has proven to be false?
i heard so many people talk about this in discussion, but have been unable to locate it in a publication.

I think many of you will return to the religion one day
by free2beme ini don't mean this as an insult, more of a life experience thing.
i saw a lot of people leave in my years there and a lot were angry with the religion and the people, and some even protested the kingdom halls and wrote things in the newspapers.
a lot though, came back in time, as it was just the comfort zone they felt at ease in.

What Bethelites Are Saying About The Layoffs
by wanda infor those who have friends there or who just left there, what is being said about this?

"If the Society does have its usual part - as has been the pattern from time to time - of "Bethel Service is Great" etc. In other words, the usual compaign to drum up new Bethelites, to my mind that would run counter to the goal of reducing staff."
You misunderstand the nature of this downsizing. It is designed to get rid of the extra "baggage" of middle-weight bethelites who present a growing risk of medical problems and may have jobs that are easily trimmed back. They will keep on encouraging young boys to go to Bethel because they still need the muscle for the menial, laborous tasks. This 19 to 24-year-old cohort has the highest attrition rate, thus the campaining will continue.
You say that it would be helpful to have a document outlining the downsizing plan - well, there are many second-hand accounts of talks given by the GB concerning this - obviously this is not enough for you and I'm confused as to why. You seem awfully eager to discount credible reports.
As far as my personal friends and family posting their experiences on JWD - are you insane? or just sarcastic? -

Orobus: There you go again, talking out of your ass. First of all, the rumour was on the scale of 1500+/- bethelites in the US. 1500/6000 = 25%. Second, it is not a rumour! I have friends AND family who are being sent home as we speak - never having to face anything like this before. I have gotten the INSIDE scoop directly from bethel.
I have no problem with the occasional Devil's advocate, but you take it to a new level of absurdity... so just stuff it.
edit: Oh, and the downsizing is going to be happenning over time, not all at once. Whether its 10, 15 or even 25%, it is certainly a substantial and massive downsizing that is going on. -

This is a review of Prince's new single from his new album, "3121." I thought it was hilarious....
He's done skeletal before, and in retrospect, "Black Sweat" is almost proto-snap music. But after a decade or so of progressively schlockier soft-focus Midnight Love ballads, this song still registers as a shock: industrial pulse-clank drums, winding German whistle-synths, negative space. Prince works his sinister falsetto hard against the unforgiving rhythm-tide, gasping and cooing and screeching: "I'm hot, and I don't care who knows it," "You'll be screaming like a white lady when I count to three." All the stuff about working up a black sweat reads false; this isn't a club jam, it's a fierce display of otherness. It's harsh and alien, like he's been listening to Mu or some shit. Finally, someone cancelled his subscription to The Watchtower." [Tom Breihan] http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/tracks/06-02-17.shtml -

Women be silent!!
by skyman ini have been looking into the research art d. ehrman from the department of religious studies from the university of north carolina.
he makes a very convincing argument that to me proves the bible verses that make women less human was not in the originals.. paul called women by name some of the women were taking the lead at romans 16: 3-16 in verse 3 say fellow worker prisca (woman).
then verse 7 junias (woman) this is interesting some bibles including the new world translation then says who are men or kinsmen this is not found at all in the older manuscripts so the new world translation and any other translation is in error.

"And Daniel!!!!!!! ((((HUGS))) I feel by the post you wrote you needed that... I still believe there is a creator....DO YOU????"
In my innermost I do believe that there is something vastly greater than me and by the very nature of the universe it stands to reason that it is an intellegent entity. However, I just no longer have a need to define that entity or try to figure out what it requires of me. I would rather live my life and still be asking those questions openly than think I have the answer and still have nagging doubts. I guess that's the biggest reason I have left the JW faith in my heart: I just want freedom to think my own thoughts and agree to disagree. Unfortunately, they do not allow that. It is nice to be here on JWD!
As far as the woman vs. man thing, I just get frustrated with people trying to re-write the Bible when there are just so many glaring facets of it that clearly do not allow for freedom of thought. Religion is all about control. Every religion of every society and people is designed to control people from birth to death and beyond even. -

Watchtower Society Losing the Information War. What Will Sink the Last Nail
by Rig Boy inwith the proliferation of blogs and forums like this one, ex-jws writing books and protesting, lawsuits, exposure of abuse, pedophilia, and mind control, what more needs to be done to sink this cult and kill it?
do the ex-jehovah's witness have enough momentum to destroy any remaining credibility the watchtower society has, or perhaps, bankrupt it?

Metatron,
I was one of those obedient zombies, but then I changed. I do not think there will ever be an entire collapse of the T religion, but it might be relagated to an ultra-specialized faith that only appeals to extremist zealots. As they lose more and more of the broad demographic to the draws of everday Western life, they will get more and more focussed on specific types fo people. -

No matter how hard you try to re-interpret scripture according to your convenience, the fact remains that the Hebrew culture and the Christian religion are largely patriarchal and efforts to change that will eventually create new sects. What's the point? The book is 2 fucking thousand years old - just write a new one for Christ's sakes. I just don't understand why so many people want to go back and re-interpret scripture because of social norms instead of just dismissing it outright. Just another example of cognitive dissonance in my opinion.

I only shower about once every 3 or 4 days, and here's why:
Out here in the temperate climate of California it is not muggy so you don't get all sweaty just being outside. I also do not work hard - I just go to school, study and design.
Actually, I have heard that dermatologists recommend not showering every day if you do not have to because of something it does to your skin or something. With that said, no, I do not smell in public and yes, I have a wife to let me know if I do.
