ok some of you will laugh at this, but it's true, there is a spirit that haunts the premises where i work.. it has spoken to me once when i was locking up, it was 1 single word "hello", i looked around and saw nothing, i ignored it, set the alarm locked the door & went home.

other times i have felt something brush passed me as i have entered the building early in the morning.

the experience that got to me most happened the other nite when i was called back to the store by security, as i pulled into the drive way there was a man standing at the rear of the building, in the split second of looking away he dissapeared, there's no way that he could have run off the property in that split second.. what do you think?.

This is what I think: If ghosts do exist, why is there not one shred of objective, verifiable, repeatable evidence proving so? Why is there ONLY testomonial evidence?
There ARE photographs, videos, recordings of evp's, but skeptics like to fall back on "they were doctored".

Are there any recordings, videos, etc. that have been produced by honest researchers (and not quacks or hoax creators), that have been independently verified? Has anything ever been recorded in a controlled setting, and thus having precluded any tampering with the scene? I don't think these are too big to ask, considering the extraordinary claims.

Of course, if people want to absolutely believe in the supernatural, no critical question is ever legitimate.

But doesn't experience also include our thoughts? In fact, isn't our experience chiefly comprised of our thoughts?

What I'm trying to say is, wouldn't our belief shape our reality? If we think "there is nothing" there will BE nothing. If we think "ghosts exist" then they WILL exist. ???

This has been an ongoing philisophical topic for hundreds of years. You'd probably do well to read into phenomenology, which is a from of rigorous inquiry that dispenses with requirements of rational objectivism as employed by modernist thinkers. Or rather, it can be described as objectivism within ones' own frame of reference or experience, a discovery of being itself, rather than the discovery and explanation of just things. Start with Heideggers "Being and Time," then on to Husserl's writings.

However, what you posit is more radical... that our experience literally changes the world. This is physically impossible, since we are all undeniably living in the same world. For your theory to be true, we would have to each be living in a seperate universe, but somehow have our physical existences overlapping... that too, is a high proposition, and I don't think the tenets of basic subjectivism are near enough to support it.

If I believe myself to be a wonderful spirit medium, I think this would probably be my reality. If I believe nothing supernatural exists, then I will never find proof of the supernatural because the world caters to my belief.

Suspending belief that something does or does not exist does not preclude an objective reality.

FF, very interesting.

Here's an example from my in-laws: My BIL and MIL are both supersticious JWs. They used to like going on drives together. One times they took a drive through the woods, heading to a coastal town. On the way, they saw an old lumber mill town red school house. The red school house is a museum, but is closed most of the time. They stopped and looked into the windows and saw that inside it looked like it did 100 years ago, with all the desks set up with pencils and paper on them and the chalk board with math problems on it, etc. It was almost as if one day they just closed the school house, walked out, locked the door, and never went back in (I've seen it and can testify to this perception). At some point they both got a "creepy feeling", so they left and walked back to the car. As they drove away, a flock of vultures began flying over their car, and they saw the vultures fly above the car for an indeterminate distance down the highway.

Every time they tell this story, they tell it together, and the vultures get more and more menacing, until finally, they are swooping down and attacking the car. The last time my BIL told the story the vultures followed them for about 20 miles.

This same BIL can tell when a storm is going to throw lightning, and swears a primal connection with electrical disturbances.

i apologize if this has been mentioned, but i don't have the time to come on here as often.

yesterday's bookstudy on divorce got my shorts in a bit of a knot.

apparently, according to the god's love book, a wife could consider legal separation from her husband if she is physically abused, but (get this) only in the case of extreme physical abuse, and if the wife's life is in danger.

One of the elders made the comment that if he 'comes home in a bad mood and smacks his wife around' then that's not grounds for divorce. I couldn't believe my ears and me and several other sisters all looked at each other in disbelief. After the meeting I went up to him and said "so if I come to the meeting next Sunday and knock your teeth down your throat, that's no reason for you to do anything about it eh?'

Why these JW "sisters" put up with this crap is beyond me. REVOLT!!!!

Okay, so society has stated that you cannot own pornographic images of children... is it because of its sick nature? or because that pornography was created by exploiting children? I think think the second reason is more important, and should be the real reason why it is outlawed, because it supports the abuse and exploitation of children. However, how does a man writing his own stories, not sharing them, pose a threat to others? We could suppose that he used his stories to tantalize himself, and that those fantasies would someday be acted out. But such a theory is highly tenuous and is a slippery slope leading to many other unethical situations.

EDIT: noticed this was in Canada, but principles still apply.

Certainly, it is all anecdotal. Not being scientists and submitting our experience to the scientific method making it provable, we are left simply with our personal experiences. In the long run, it really doesn't matter what our belief's are in ghosts or demons, that is, unless we are being personally attacked by them (or something we THINK is them). People like to think about it though. The fact that there are TV shows such as Ghost Hunters (which seems to be popular) shows that there is an interest in them. There is also a great interest in vampires, I can't even count the shows about them. Never had an experience with a vampire.

I like to think about it too, and am not in absolute disbelief of things that are outside our current scientific understanding. I am merely highly skeptical, but would love to have real evidence for these things.

I think humans do have a sort of "sixth sense" left over from times when we were in constant danger, and that these mechanisms sometimes go "haywire" and interfere with our more basic senses.

Many things we take for granted today would have been considered "supernatural" just a few hundred years ago. I'm open to the possibility that life forms exist that are not yet detectable by our current technology, and that this could change at some future time. That doesn't necessarily mean they are "ghosts", "angels", or "demons". It just means we haven't yet reached the level of science necessary to define such phenomena.

It's not just that those phenomena would be undefinable with current technologies, but that their existence would be contrary to virtually every known law of the universe. That's a big proposition, one for which personal testimony is simply not enough to support, in my mind.
