last night i called to do the "check-in" thing on my mom.
she had just been to the assembly and she was all fired up and decided to give me an earful.
apparently, at the assembly all in attendance were told that "this is it" the end is nigh and they should do all they can to prepare for the impending destruction about to befall everyone.
Detach with love, love from a distance, and continue with your own process. It's one of the ways I find peace through this whole thing.
Sloboy - I really think that is good advice. I enjoyed our conversation at Apostofest so much!
I also think Reborn2002 is right, I suppose it is a matter of acceptance - that nothing I say can really change her thinking..
Some people are so brainwashed, they are beyond hope.

You know what Elsewhere? I find that offensive. This is my mother I'm talking about, not my ex- JW friend or cousin. And I asked for some feedback or help, not a slam on my mother.

Forgive them, for they know not what they are saying.
Easier said than done when "they" are your mother

Apparently, at the assembly all in attendance were told that "this is it" the end is nigh and they should do all they can to prepare for the impending destruction about to befall everyone. She asked me to talk to an elder again because she hates to think that I am going to lose my life outside of Jehovahs organization.
this conversation only went downhill. I told her that I was happy outside the "org" and then tried to plant some seeds and explain why. Her only response was that "even if the new system never comes, and the organization is wrong, she wouldnt go anywhere else" That floored me, totally blew my mind! How do you answer that? What does that mean? I felt very frustrated, it feels like beating you head on the wall.
joy2bfree and i have so enjoyed meeting over 70 of the posters here on jwd in the last few months.
this has brought us even closer to many, yet the things i learned about each made me even more concerned about others here.
i hope each is getting what they need from this cyberpub we visit.
Just2Laws,
Thank you so much. Steve was quite impressed with the kindness and love between total strangers that he witnessed at Apostofest, and your story was an inspiration as well. And actually, I might add that this board is wonderful for mates of ex-JW's just to gain insight into what has happened to so many people. Steve is a lurker, and will hopefully post someday. I wrote a short synopsis of my story when I first started posting. Someday, when I get up the nerve, I will write the details. It would be cathartic I'm sure.
as most of you already know, the jehovah's witnesses are covering an article in their august kingdom ministry to be discussed the weeks of 8/19 and 8/26 which details how they are to shun and avoid those who are no longer members of their organization, even immediate family members.. .
undoubtedly this article has been written to reinforce to the rank&file jehovah's witnesses the shunning policy, so as to tighten the ranks and prevent members from having the opportunity to learn the abundant contradictions and hypocrisies found within watchtower doctrine and practice from any who may have left.. this policy also serves to divide families and attempt to shame or abuse those whom have chosen to no longer be jehovah's witnesses, for whatever reason.. that much is obvious.
in recent days this topic has been discussed in detail in various threads.
Reborn-
I was shunned prior to this, so not much has changed for me. Mostly that is because I moved 3K miles away... although I wonder if my mom will shun my "check in phone calls", we'll see. (especially since she's at the assembly in Tampa/St.Petersburg this weekend)
It's cruel and it's unnatural to treat any human being this way - MUCH more so if it's family. How the society can continue to keep the lid on a boiling pot astounds me to no end.
I remember reading about the terrible fight you had with your brother over your seeing you nephew a few months ago, I was curious if your situation has gotten more difficult since this KM came out?

having finally accepted that the united kingdom is not the centre of the universe - i know, it hurts, it hurts - i have been boning up on some american history for a change.. first off, i have been watching a series on sky that deals with the american civil war.
wow, what an amazingly complicated conflict that was.
i was astonished to learn that the the uk was about to switch it's allegience fron the north to the south purely for trade purposes so as to keep it's cotton mills spinning.. secondly, i have been swotting through my encyclopaedia's for more information about this conflict.
Englishman,
The History of the Civil War by James Ford Rhodes is great book that is very unbiased. I would recommend it.
I was raised in Tennessee, and my family is all from the south. My father pointed out that after 198 years, I was the first member of our family to move North of the Mason Dixon line. I think the North/South issue depends on the family. My fathers family was active in the Civil war, so it was kept alive for generations. Being a southerner living in the Northwest is irrelevent, but I do hang on to a lot of my southern roots. I eat grits and cornbread and collard greens and say ya'll. I don't feel any animosity toward any Northern folks and I have never felt any against me because I'm southern. Of course, I can't speak for everyone. I know there is still a lot of prejudice in the south, more than a lot of areas in the United States.

Just2Laws, I enjoyed visiting with you last weekend in Edmonds!!
Why am I here?
Just2Laws, your words expressed a lot of what I feel, but I think the 2 main reasons Im here is to heal, and to develop the skills to help others. I think the value of this board became a realization for me after the death of Robert Bryant and his family. I felt like this was the place I could grieve for the Bryant family and understand my own feelings by reading the thoughts and feelings of other posters. I also felt an intense need to reach out to other people who feel lost after they leave the organization.
I went to my first Apostofest last weekend, (which I learned about on this board) and I meant so many people who came from a similar background as me. Ive spent the last 6 or 7 years feeling like a freak of nature because of how I grew up. Now I have a community of my own that I can feel comfortable in, and that I can lead other people to. Thats my selfish reason.
My unselfish reason is that Im meeting people here locally that have questions, or who dont know where to go. I just got an email the other day from a young guy who was recently disfellowshipped. Weve been talking and I sent him here to learn other peoples experiences. I can help and Im learning things here that can help others, and I can send people here to feel part of this community.
i just want to take the opportunity to thank steve and rachael (princess) for hosting an excellent party.
contrary to what may have been a false impression, though there was beer and wine for those who wanted, the gathering was not a "kegger" and teetotalers and children were both safe!.
my personal thanks and warmest regards to our wonderful hostess and host.
I also used the "little potty" and almost fell down getting up..it was comical.
