I think it is very possible that the whole 1914 date itself will be minimized probably starting this year, certainly by the 100 year anniversary of 2014.
It could easily be done by just not mentioning it any more in the current literature - much like they put an end to the 7,000 year creative days.
Then, the emphasis could be a "signs based" eschatology, as was mentioned above.
Really, a 100 year old "sign/time of the end" is pretty long in the tooth to keep on hammering into the next century.

This somehow reminds me of the notion that "eating of the forbidden fruit" was a euphemism for sex...a thought that sprang up during fundamentalism, but not something stated in the Old Testament.

Actually, Terry - if you think about it, the Old Testament itself makes eating the fruit of the forbidden tree a far more serious sin than eating meat, or even murder re. Cain vs. Abel.
The notion of "meat eating = sinfulness" is a much more modern manifestation of modern-day pacifist based religion.
Note that IIRC, while the OT says God gave the passengers of the ark "every kind of animal to eat" after the flood, it also never says that humans could NOT eat animal flesh before the flood.

What the hell is the point of it all? The only thing the JWs use it for is to mysteriously derive the date 1914 from it.
Nothing happened in 1914 that was prophecied - now even the "generation of 1914 that would never die" has had to be redefined into nothingness.
With nothing left to base on 607, why is it still such a big deal to the JW apologists?

Yes, but some of the doctrine (like the "generation" of 1914 that would never die) was so insane that they had to do something.
I personally think that the new light on the FDS being only the GB is reactionary to this increase in the partakers - which just does not seem to be dying down even when the Watchtower warned them that they were probably mental defects.
