How is it different from the seemingly hard-wired human propensity to invent religions?

Belief on the paranormal and superstition, it might not be our choice.
by cyberjesus ini think thats is a waste of time to speak with a stubborn superstitious person.... but we are pattern seeking creatures, and superstition might be an effect and not a cause... enjoy.. http://youtu.be/b_6-ivz1r0o.

Law School/Medical School Reading Book on Genetics and Jehovah's Witnesses
by Justitia Themis inthe book is recommended reading in my bioethics law class.
this is a law/medicine class that combines students from the school of medicine, the school of public health, and the school of law, so a broad cross-section of people will base their opinions of jws on this book.
my fellow students include a working neonatologist, a japanese health department employee, a chinese gentleman who works for some chinese gov't agency, a north african lawyer, an australian international health care worker, an undergrad ethics professor from a different, but local, university, and a social worker who is a fellow at a local pediatric bioethics foundation.

It should be of interest to note whether the authors think that genetic profiling itself (like the search for "cancer genes" described above) has ethical issues...for example - should these women be subjected to pre-emptive mastectomies because they have this tendency?
Should people be tested for "homosexual genes", "alcoholism genes", etc...?
Should ia totalitarian government be allowed to abort all fetuses who will have Down's Syndrome?
At what point have we allowed "genetic engineering" to take over natural human society?

I was an elder up until the time I quit.
We were upper middle class, so we were considered people of the "JW rich class".
Finally, I achieved the high rank of "Apostate".

elders wife swapping question
by unstopableravens ini hear of these stories of elders swapping wives, i remember when i was young hearing of three elders in florida doing this and getting dfed.
my question is this how is it possible to bring this up in conversation?
it seems impossible, how can there be multi elders that know each other willing and the wives?

I always wondered why this is called wife swapping? It makes the women seem like property to be exchanged. Why not husband swapping?
From what I have seen of it - that is exactly the way it works. It usually starts as a male fantasy - using the wife as a sales tool to get the deals made. It is interesting to note that single women are welcome at "swingers clubs", but men have to attend as a couple only.

The Other Side of the Indian Rape Story
by fulltimestudent ini'm posting this story, not to defend an indefensible act, but to try to provide some balance.
the fact is that so many indians exist in a poverty so deep that it's difficult for westerners to even understand.
the youngest of the rapists in the now world known rape story, according to this uk, independent newspaper story, grew up in that world that seems hopeless.

Where did anybody even imply it was excusable?
What does this sound like to you, Cofty? It sounds like an apology to me. For one thing, these notions (poverty, hopelessness, etc.) are irrelevant to the act of rape and murder.

Also, for males who exist in that world, satisfaction of their personal sexual needs is as far off as their next meal. I think we should also appreciate that there is little in their future that may give hope of change.

Justitia Themis is exactly right.
I am starting to wonder if fulltimestudent did this just to stir up contraversy.
The notion that people rape because they want sex is absurd - rape is a crime of violence and control, not of erotic passion.
The notion that people rape because they live in poverty is so stupid as to not even bear comment.
The notion that this crime should be viewed by the west as excusable because of poverty is idiotic and immoral in itself.
I am going to remember this ludicrous thread for a long, long time.

The Oh-my-God Particle
by EntirelyPossible ini thought this was really interesting and wanted to share.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/oh-my-god_particle.
the oh-my-god particle was an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (most likely a proton) detected on the evening of 15 october 1991 over dugway proving ground, utah.
its observation was a shock to astrophysicists, who estimated its energy to be approximately 31020 ev (50 j)[1]in other words, a subatomic particle with kinetic energy equal to that of a 5-ounce (142 g) baseball traveling at about 100 kilometers per hour (60 mph).. the particle was traveling very close to the speed of light - assuming the particle was a proton, its speed was only about 1.5 femtometers (quadrillionths of a meter) per second less than the speed of light, translating to a speed of approximately 0.9999999999999999999999951c.

why the name?(oh my god)
Probably a play on words about Leon Lederman's book "The God Particle"...

From the TV coverage it looked like a very nice, upscale home. The man who broke in (peace be with him) appears to be a very unfortunate individual who had turned to desparate measures in order to live a decent life.
It's too bad it has to come to this. All people have to do is be more sharing and unselfish with their material posessions.
Being shot in the face with a .38 seems a cruel thing to do to someone who is in need.
Either that was posted totally in jest, or it was the most incredibly wrongheaded thing I have yet read on this subject.
