I'd be interested in one too. It's cited in another thread as indicating a bit of a different tone in the WT.

In what year did Rutherford forbid military service?

it would be quite right to shoot, not to kill.

That may take some searching to find. I think after the 1918 imprisionment they were extremely cautious in what they said in public, and even in private. But, perhaps others have some info?

Still, the 1934 statement is quite dishonest.

I believe the post-96 view is that civilian service might be acceptable, but not military.

As to Russell...I believe there are quotes where he said a Bible Student in the army would only "terrify the enemy" instead of kill them. So, his acceptance of warfare was quite limited.

The 1918 fiasco (imprisionment of JFR and the members of the board of directors) revolved around this issue too. They had been accused of discouraging support for the War and the military. So, I really think this pre-dates Rutherford.

chess has been a game of war since it originated...a play substitute for the art of war....a danger of stirring up competition with one another even developing hostility towards another, something the bible warns christians to avoid doing...what effect does chess have upon one?

I arrived in Brooklyn about 6 months after this Awake! was published. I was told there'd been Bethelite chess clubs that had disbanded after it came out but a few (the BAs -- Bad Attitudes) who still played it. I remember, at the time, thinking the Awake! article was a bit over the top.

These 1922 Watch Tower articles present acceptance of the Watchtower Society's chronological structure associated with 1874, 1878, 1910, 1914 and 1918 as a test of loyalty.

The Watch Tower magazine reasons that when Cyrus started his reign in 536 BCE, he issued the edict that enabled Jews to return home in that same year. From that date these articles, as did Russell, use the "seventy years of captivity" to calculate the destruction of Jerusalem at 606 BCE. They then use the "seven times" of Leviticus 26 to provide a 2520-year period that ended about August 1914, even though "all the things that some looked for did not materialize." (Watch Tower, May 15, 1922, page 150) "It was on this line of reasoning that the dates 1874, 1914, and 1918 were located, and the Lord has placed the stamp of his seal. ... Using this same measuring line ... it is an easy matter to locate 1925, probably the fall, for the beginning of the antitypical jubilee." (Watch Tower, May 15, 1922, page 150) As support for the Watch Tower's chronologies, the articles point to several 1845-year and 2520-year Biblical parallels as well as to the correspondence of dozens of measurements within the Great Pyramid of Egypt (Watch Tower, June 15, 1922, page 187). The Watch Tower thus calls for endurance: "[Jesus] commands his followers to tell the people that Satan's empire has ended; that the gentile times have ended, that the world has ended, and here is the proof of it; that the kingdom of heaven is at hand; that the time of restoration is here; that millions now living will never die." (Watch Tower, May 1, 1922, page 139)
