It took me awhile to become comfortable with the term, but it seems to be much easier after reading 1984 & The Orwellian World of JW's. Frankly, there's no other term for it and it's much easier to tell people it's a cult (which I believe it is) than it is to explain all the oddities that make it different than the average Christian establishment.

Body Modification...
by bbdodger ini love to login to myspace and see if i can find some ex-jws, or active jws from (my) cong., or ones that i knew from other congs.. i came across a profile of someone i knew, who was in the same congregation.
her name isn't particularly common, and there is a resemblance, so i think it's most likely the girl who i went to kh with.. she says she's "atheist", and has a tattoos on her face, piercings, and her profile is decorated with naked women.

bbdodger,
A) You remind me alot of my friend puck (she's here as well), tho she wasn't really punk or goth back in the day, just her own artistic statement. It seems to me that those who stand out as especially unique when they are dubs turn out to be some of the most colorful and interesting people when they leave. You strike me as one of these people, so I'm insanely curious.
B) I understand what you mean regarding "punk". While I never had the "punk look", I love the music and, in a way, am more punk than the new generation as I don't dress in the uniform. The new "punk" to me is Backstreet Boys *gag* with mohawks, where's the anger, social and political commentary that the genre was built upon?
C) As far as doing the look first, I can empathise a little. Shortly after leaving the dubs and moving to Oregon, I developed my now known bald head + goatee look. I shaved my head because my hair was getting in the way and the goatee because I was too lazy to shave. 5 years later, the "Anton Levey look" became super popular and acceptable, so I upgauged my rings :D

Did you ever choke while offering prayer?
by Jourles inof all the times i was called upon to say prayer, i only remember choking once - but it was such a big choke i totally embarrassed myself for days on end afterwards.
and this one time wasn't even at the kh, it was in a home right before we were going to pre-study the wt.. there were roughly 3 elders, their wives, and some other close friends of mine in the living room.
i'd say there were around 10 of us total.

Should I pretend to be Christian right now because of where I live?
by tsunami_rid3r inwhy didn't i follow the way of jesus and go to bethel?
along with my other topic dealing with my searching for my place in this town, i come across plenty of people who follow their parents, go to church, and vote for bush and all that boring stuff.
at subway today, there was a large group of happy christians ordering their food.

My personal hypothesis: As dubs we are raised on the outside of society. After we leave, we become part of said society, but are more prone than most to be comfortable being a bit freaky or on the outside. This is based mostly on my personal approach and observations.

Why use the word apostate?
by greendawn inwhy should we define ourselves by what the fds defines us?
our enemies who seek emotional control over us even after we left their destructive cult have invested a lot of effort to demonize us with the word apostate and when we use the term ourselves we do their work for them.
most so called apostates simply thought about things deeply and came up with many questions that the jws instead of answering in a logical manner labelled these inquiring minds as demon inspired apostates doubting the god appointed fds and expelled them from their org.

Gopher wrote: "I love using the word "apostate", inaccurate though it is. It takes the power of the term away from the bastards. I use it in a tongue-in-cheek way. Actually I think of it as a badge of honor, synonymous with "mentally free from the Brooklyn bastards". If the Brooklyn bastards don't like me enjoying their term, there's a bridge near their headquarters from which I would invite them to take a jump!" My take as well Gopher, similar to the gay community taking back the term "queer". What was once a term of damnation or exile can be worn proudly and thrown in their face!

Why I have issues with Christianity
by bigwilly inaside from the jw bullshit of course.. so, i'm at work and taking phone calls as is my job.
a customer called up looking for pricing and information about some material and whether or not home despot sells equal quality product.
being the honest (for a salesman at least :p) person that i am, i answered her questions to the best of my ability.. after this was done, she asked me what my name was.

Good commentary by all of you. As stated in one of my posts, I was generalizing which is not representative of all members of a group.
OTWO, you raise a good point. I had not considered that I'm harassed by Christian people more due to population density. And honestly, the way I prefer to present myself makes me almost irresistable to those that want to save "lost souls". I also admit that the majority of my bitterness has to do with experiences with seriously overzealous individuals years ago. The lady I dealt with this time was a customer so I had to be nice, but she was really well behaved and not condescending. It just brought back some of the "thorns in my side" over the years.
