  this summer i wanted to give my son a religious education.

  by "religious education" i mean that i wanted to educate him about various religions without indoctrinating him to believe any specific way.

  i want him to be knowledgable enough to be culturally literate and able to make an informed decision about his spiritual needs.. we have been reading together in genesis, but i also browsed at the library to find a book that might give us more detail about specific religious beliefs.

  I don't think Ginny was advocating bringing up a child in any particular religious movement. What she wants to do is to give her child knowledge (about the plethora of religious thought) so that he can make his own informed decision regarding what is right for him.

  If you enjoy the book, PBS produced a multi-part interview with Huston Smith by Bill Moyers. You might be able to rent it or check it out from your local library. I only saw parts, but what I saw was very interesting. A very gentle and humble man.

  An excellent balanced overview of many of the world's major religions can be found in The World's Religions by Huston Smith ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0062508113/qid=997899245/sr=2-1/103-9251448-6066225. It is a recently updated classic and is used by many universities in introductory Religious Studies courses. Huston is a believer (Christian) who has adopted practices from other religions (i.e. yoga). If I remember correctly he has dedicated 10 years of study to each of a variety of major belief systems.

  ..."Religions divide people and teach them to hate each other." This is ridiculous...

  Let's see... What about The Crusades, The Inquisition, witch burnings, The Reformation, The Holocaust, Hindu/Muslim violence in India, Northern Ireland, fatwas, all the sectarian bickering and persecution, JW's views about "Christendom," and "worldly people" or "unbelievers," and so on.

  This isn't to discount the good things religions have done. They don't however erase or negate all the bad.

  on saturday, a speaker from bethel was in town and gave a talk/lecture/seminar on the subject of bloodless surgery.

  earlier that day i found the oct 15, 2000 wt with the qfr article discussing blood yet again.

  Charlie uses his father's stage surname (Sheen), and Emilio uses his father's birth surname (Estevez). Martin is from Dayton, Ohio.

  in buffalo, convicted murderer jonathan parker appealed for his.

  life and apologized to the family of the police officer he killed.

  just before jurors took up the issue of whether he will live or die.. his hands wringing but his voice steady, the 20-year-old said he was.

  I don't believe JWs as a group are more inclined to murder, to the breaking of "Caesars Laws," or to things like pedophilia than any other group. What this article and the recent publicity about pedophilia demonstrate is that JWs are just like the rest of us with all our warts, pimples and other defects, contrary to their cherished belief and outlandish claim that they are morally superior, more loving, and "more clean" than the so-called "world." Because of this (and some of their other claims regarding divine direction, Bible chronology, and science) it follows that they have their heads buried in the sand far more so than the average person.

  she even suggested we attend a neutral non-denominational church as a compromise.

  Hello All:

  My wife recently began therapy. Her therapist is unaware of just what type of religion the WT is (high-control group). She even suggested we attend a neutral non-denominational church as a compromise.

  I am to speak with her therapist regarding this in the near future and wanted to refer the therapist to a peer who has experience in this area so that my wife's therapist does not have to rely on my unbiased opinion and has the resources to evaluate just how and how much my wife's involvement with JWs is effecting her psychological/emotional well-being, and how best to treat her.

  If anyone knows of an experienced professional psychologist (preferably a Ph.D. and preferably in the Southern California area, but anywhere in the world would be fine), could they please e-mail me with the name of the person and their contact information.

  A Tasty Lil Bit O' Gossip.

  here's a picture of the late sir john fieldhouse during his time as an admiral in the royal navy.

  he later became first sea lord and was in charge of operations during the falklands war when england and argentina slugged it out in the south atlantic back in '82.

  his wife shown here is lady fieldhouse - known to her friends as midge - who is a very active jehovahs witness residing in lee on solent, near portsmouth.

  Many Argentines also view themselves as being very "European." Some look down on their South American brothers as being beneath them in this respect, being more mestizo (of mixed European and indigenous heritage) or native than Argentines. Because of this many Argentines expected to be backed by their European brothers. When this was not forthcoming, it was another blow to the country. Their greatest support came from fellow South Americans.

  Most South American nations had to break free of the colonial chains in order to enjoy freedom and escape the economic stronghold countries like Spain, Portugal, and Holland had over them. Many followed the lead of the United States, and Argentina's original constitution was molded after the United States'. Some of this disdain remains to this day along with much resentment towards the U.S. for our meddling in their national affairs -- Banana republics, our support of abusive governments, including those of Argentina and Chile.
