Do you know the words to the national anthem?

ah to be a jw and be singled out every time it's sung or played.

since leaving the jws do you know the words to the national anthem?.

thanks to the school system and a pretty good memory especailly for lyrics i knew the words in two languages before i ever left the witnesses, something that i'm quite proud of today.

Most Australians know much of the first verse of "Advance Australia Fair".

It's fun watching sportsmen on TV before a game. Many just move their lips occasionally.

When our Government decided to drop the British national anthem and adopt a new one there was huge public consultation.

A very large percentage of the population wanted "Waltzing Matilda".

"Waltzing Matilda" is a ballad about a bloke who stole and ate a sheep, and when the coppers arrived to bust him, suicided by drowning.

That would have been much more fun than our present anthem.

Now we sing that "our land is girt by sea".

Bloody hell. Girt-by-Sea sounds like a dismal pommie beach resort. I always imagine a postcard featuring a fat lady called Gertrude in a beach chair.

when i was a kid, we used to spend every weekend at my grandparants house.

my grammy had a huge leather brown couch, on which we watched movies (i was either on the couch or hiding in her arms cuz the movie scared me sh*tless).

one day, we were watching a movie, which endscene has haunted my mind ever since.

Aw....maybe.

What about the young married couple who loved each other so dearly. It was Christmas and neither had any money to but each other a gift.

So she shaved off her lovliest asset - her beautiful flowing hair - and sold it to to a wigmaker to be able to buy him a golden fob for his watch, his most treasured possession.

But he had sold his watch to buy her a lovely brush for her hair.

I've always considered that O'Henry story more potent than R & J.

Maybe it's time for an O'Henry revival. One of the great American writers.

(Okay, his stories are just short fluff pieces - but what's wrong with that?)

yep, new year's day's a scorcher in sydney, nsw.

in the city (by the coast) it's hit 45 degrees !!!

out near bethel it's a few degrees hotter.

Billygoat....Texas....Yeah, I read in to-days paper that you are in the middle of a 20 or 50 year drought...........Same sort of stuff happening here.

Hey Billygoat from Texas.............A texas (Texan ?) cattleman visited one of our cattle stations over here. He told the owner that it took him three days to ride around his fence line. The Aussie told him that he once owned a horse like that once so he shot it.

Could you be remembering the great O'Henry story about the last leaf ?

The girl is lying, dying in bed staring at a wall covered with grape-vine. The leaves are shedding as winter approaches.

A frustrated, unsuccessful artist in the same apartment cares deeply for her.

She decides that when the last leaf falls, she will die.

It was a bitter winter but one leaf just managed to hang on. It refused to fall. So she refused to die.

The artist's body was found in the snow at the bottom of a ladder.

He had painted his finest picture. A leaf.

Bloody hell...I'm getting moisty-eyed myself now.

They did make a movie of it...

Ozzie isn't here to-nite. But down south where he is to-day the temperature is way over 100 with 50 mph winds.

Every fire crew is out. Houses have been lost. The road between Brisbane and Sydney is closed.

Ozzie is okay where he lives.

It doesn't bear to think of the pain and destruction to our beautiful wild-life. But, that's nature. I guess.

No, it's not nature. It's us stupid people being selfish with our planet.

i have had a quick look and found no references to this, so - here goes..as in the mag we picked up on sunday.. worldwide % increase over 2004 = 1.3%.

memorial partakers 8524 (compared to 8570 in 2004).

most european and nth american lands show pretty static figs - britain 1% increase, canada 0%, germany 0%, france 1%, usa 0%... but spare a thought for the inhabitants of zambia where 1 person in 90 is a reporting witness, must be hell going down to the local market!
