What do you think of AOG church?

hello friends, i am a fading jw and i am thinking of attending sunday service at a local aog church here, just for fellowship.

i have lots of friends but none of them are spiritual minded.

not that i am complaining but it would be nice to meet some spiritual minded people.

Yknot - "The people are 'nice' and 'quaint' folk but they don't seem to be emotionally balanced and functional human beings regarding spiritual matters and such high emotions often cause them to create unneeded trouble in their own lives and in others as they appear to be feeding off each others high emotions."

I've met quite a number and Yknot's comment describes them to a 'T'. One worked for us and one couple I dealt with were the local pastor and wife team. The common denominator was the nutty, zoned out, rapid talk behaviour that seemed to block any rational thought or calm conversation.

Some schizophrenics with the religion fixation are similar.

BTW, the pastor and wife couple weren't too bad actually. I don't think AOG was their thing perhaps.

i've been in lurkmode lately, but with the news that i heard about don cornelius dying, it had me thinking...as this world goes on, and people are coping with this world...i think a lot jw's are going to realize that the end of the world isnt coming...there gonna become more despert, the realities of having to work, pay off debts, etc.

a lot of jw's are going to realize that no magical sky daddy is come and 'take away there problems' and i think the more that they start to realize this, they get older, and there gonna start hating the reality that they have to face.

i had a good friend who's father-in- law (who was a ministrial servant) who had bipolar disorder, killed himself in his car back in 2007. it was sad.

Steve, you're probably thinking of Archie Gemmells' brother, Paul. There was an Awake article about him. Dunno what happened to him. Probably as bitter and disappointed as me !!

The two Human Resource depts. I've had dealings with, one, my own and one, my wifes' have been pretty good. Well done them!

Formerly known as 'Personnel', I think Human Resources sounds like a bit of a 'spare parts' supplier.

Suicide - How many do you know within the JWs

one interesting but truly tragic is the number of jwhovah's witnesses who commit suicie.. now i suspect that if a person commits suicide shortly before or after they are disfellowshipped then the elders would say that person wasn't a witness or that they had done something so terrible that they were too guilty to admit it and by their action of committing suicide they pretty much declared they were no longer a jw.. yup fancy talk to make sure any crap didn't fall on them.. so my question.. do you know of cases like this?

if so then can you answer a few more questions.. had this person been dfed or in real danger of being dfed or whatever the equivalent is if they were never baptized?.

That wasn't intended to be black humour. I know how distressing it is.

I know, personally, of three suicides in NZ. I've posted elsewhere about them; Ben- only son of single sister hanged himself aged about 15. Dion- Elders son gassed himself in his car at cemetery. Sis. _ - Elders mother overdosed on alcohol and sleeping pills. The Elder told me, privately, that the ambulance officers suggested suicide. The wider BOE didn't know and the funeral was conducted at the KH.

All three were baptised or in good standing.

Two or three have joined me in psych groups that were JW's. All had Elders as fathers, coincidentally. They all spoke of suicidal feelings, except for one who had had a gutsful of her endometriosis. (Actually, her Dad is a good guy)

Reasons for my (failed!) suicide attempts revolved around a sense of worthlessness and hopelessness because of never doing enough to keep the jealous God happy. I have never been disfellowshipped.

BTW, after ten years in and out of mental hospitals, I only had one brother try to make contact with me. Good on him, but, only one!?

Actually, while this might be initially true, if memory serves me correctly, the majority that post on JWD are more likely to be atheist, agnostic or ambivalent toward God.

in his book, in search of christian freedom, ray franz make the point about his uncle fred that he lived a detached, cloistered, isolated existence.

he was separated and far-removed from the day-to-day issues of ordinary people.

like him, i suspect that many or even most of the wt leaders fall into that category.

Ha! I was always bugged by the GB using a middle initial when their names were printed e.g. Fred W. Franz, Albert D. Schroeder, Ulysses V. Glass.

Why? Does the middle initial differentiate you from thousands of other namesakes? Will everyone be confused about who you are ?

Unless your name is John Smith or David Jones then use of your middle initial is pompous and pretentious.

(This may or may not apply to Americans)

Is this the future of the new televangelists ? Christianity Hip Hop (lite).

Jesus and religion are inseperable. The catch-phrase "I love Jesus but hate religion" has been around for decades and is often used by the young trenders but, with a little probing, you find that they also have a list of rules and regulations that constitute a different brand of religion.

But he's a nice looking guy and his shuffling rap was endearing.
