i'll go first: i participated in the chicken dance on at least 3 separate occasions, all jw weddings .
Crikey! I broke into a cold sweat when I read this thread.
My eldest son got married last Saturday and at some point, at the reception, the bloody Chicken Dance came on and had more dancers than any other song.
I was mortified. Black Sheep could be right.

this was briefly mentioned in one of miseryloveselders threads, but i had the honor of a local needs talk pointed at me.
shortly before i got married to my "worldly" husband there was a talk about "marrying only in the lord", "do not become unevenly yoked", blah blah blah.. i wasn't shocked that it was given, i was actually waiting to hear about it.
i was more surprised that they waited until about a month before our wedding day to give it.
My wife and I were walking to catch a boat home after work one Friday, (we lived on an island at the time). As it left later on a Friday night to accommodate shoppers, we stopped to enjoy an outdoor rock concert for about 30 mins. while we had some time. We got home an hour and a half later and learned there had been a riot just after we had left. (The Black Friday riot in Auckland for those who remember).
We told all the friends on Sunday at the meeting that we had been there and just missed the 'excitement'.
At the service meeting on Thursday, there was a local needs talk about not attending rock concerts because you'll get caught up in a riot, sure as hell.
It was given by one of the cool elders. He wasn't so cool with us after that.
Quite well done and with a bit of humour. The conundrum, as far as I can see is that despite 'olah' meaning 'burnt sacrifice', the scripture clearly says Jephthah's daughter went and wept over her virginity with her gal pals for two months and then returned home.
So what is it? Throat cut or intact hymen?
Is there a translation error on someones part?
i was invited today to a person who's studying the bible with the jw from my former congo to repair her computer.
inevitably, the reasons for my da came into discussion.
i gave her some good apostate explanations and she seemed to see the light.
What the...?! That just felt like I was channel surfing!

Undoubtedly, this is an obscure poem about the great English Centre Half that passed away not too long ago.
There are lots of things in the poem that I didn't know about him.
i am thinking along the lines of socialising:.
how easy is it for you to "switch off" and just enjoy the evening, without starting to think "okay- she is a borderline alcoholic, he's prolly gay, that one has multiple personality disorder, he is entering a psychotic episode, and she always starts fugueing after too much wine.".
can you ever see your friends and fambly as just people, or do you have to make a conscious effort to switch off and enjoy yourself.
HamB. I have had a lifetime of mental illness and have got to know lots of Psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and occupational therapists as a patient.
Many of them have saved themselves by being in their chosen profession. Consider that. And some are just really good people with all sorts of problems. Like normal people.
Don't panic matey. Enjoy an ale with them. They don't want to talk 'shop'.

i can't see a religious affiliation, although i am inclined to think a possible adventist connection.. i could not find a referral to it here, just wondering if anybody has any info on this.
i thought jw's were the only ones who held to the 607 date..
"My" visiting elder who I have running around trying to find authoritative, independant academics who support the 607 dogma was thrilled to find screeds of info. by Rolf Furuli.
When I showed him that Furuli is a Norwegian Witness he was.....surprised and crestfallen.
You've probably got another Witness who hides his affilliation.

on monday, pbs began airing a new mini-series entitled, "god in america".

It should be a very interesting series. The story of religion in America, as opposed to the story of religion in general, gives an idea of how American society began to be structured as people from many European nations escaped the clutches of the dominant churches of their homeland and created a society where anyone could pick up a Bible and become a preacher.
I started googling stuff related to 'American religiosity' some time ago and found lots of interesting thoughts on why America has this, virtually unique in the Western world, love affair with religion.
