i was very surprised when i learned that the speakers at district conventions were graded on their performance like little school girls at a third grade recital...and yet when they speak to us it is as the voice of god. what a joke.

Why didn't Jesus Give Instructions for a Bible?
by gumby inmatt: 24:14 .."and this good new of the kingdom will be preached in all the earth as a witnesss to all the nations - and then the end will come".. jesus plan was that by the time he was to return, the earth would be schooled as to who and what he was.
suppose you were going to leave the planet for 2000 years and you wanted the entire earthly society of people who would be alive when you returned to know about you.
would you tell someone to write down all your words of truth since these words would produce salvation and eternal life to all who believed in you........or would you tell a handful of diciples or say even 500 buddies to spread your words to their children and down through the succeding generations?.

unc,
i don't fear science how did you get that idea? and i don't find jwd all that tough, how did you get that idea? and i have dealt with the hawks of academia and found most of them to be absolute asses, just like elders they can't grab their butts with both hands but they know where the comma goes. and if you dissagree with them or question their research or their conclusion they condemn you to ignorance, just as elders condemn you to death. and both groups believe that their condemnation actually means something. big deal. if you wish to believe either group so be it, i'm not here to condemn anyone over a comma or a scripture. i leave that to the ones who are into that sort of thing.
i find it a little disengenious that you compare the posts on jwd with books. i too find most of these accounts to be true. however they are not books they are experiences, and there is a difference. i know you know this so i'll chalk it up to having just woke up and coffee deprivation.
you are right about historians not being dogmatic purveyors of bullshit anymore than other scientists, but also they are not dogmatic purveyors of bullshit any less than other scientists. and therein lies the rub. my distaste for acedemia is a long held core part of me and not just a phase, but i too have had acedemics for friends and by and large have found them to be just as dumb as any of us. they have only learned where to put the comma. and if they feel they can get away with it they put the comma anywhere they damn well please.
please believe me when i say that i am not trying to diminish the joy you find in history. i just don't share it. i don't pay particular attention to the past or to the future. i learned at an early age that it doesn't matter if i ate yesterday or will eat tomorrow, it's whether i eat today that counts. so to try and bring this back on topic... i don't care if jesus left six words or a billion books it all boils down to love your god and love your neighbor as yourself. so my answer to gumby's origional question is that jesus didn't leave instructions for a bible because it wasn't necessary.
live long and prosper my dear unclebruce, because i look forward to discussing many things with you. do not fear me for i have no reason to fear you.

unclebruce,
you almost got my point. a concept so simple, so ingrained in the human psyche that lao tsu, buddha, celts, druids, vikings, polynesians, australian aborigines, american indians, inuit, mung tribespeople, animistic melanisians, zulus, many others; not to forget jesus, paul, unclebruce, and just2sheep can understand it. you can expand on it, you can expound on it, but; no matter how many words you use, or who you site as your source, or what proof you site as to why you believe one came after the other, you can't make it any truer. or any less true.
those six words are a universal truth...if people would pay attention to just the neighbor part the world would be an easier place to live in. how you or anyone else deals with the god part is up to the individual, and really isn't any of my business. that is between the individual and their god or no god or whatever. but if you aren't treating your neighbor with love, or you aren't treating me with love, then i don't care how you are dealing with the god part of the equation...god may love you; but i don't have to; and no amount of verbage can alter that. it isn't "deep" but it is true.
"there are 450 million taoists who would laugh at your 'depth'..." that may be true, but even jerry seinfeld would have trouble pulling those kind of numbers for one joke. unc, i never try for depth. i have enough trouble trying for quality.
no offense, but i have as much respect for history books and historians as some people on jwd have for the watchtowers and awakes.

myelaine,
the god of the bible was exactly the one jesus was speaking of...endless rules did not help the jewish nation and they will not help you.
unclebruce,
do i have this straight? jesus said 6 words that we are all familiar with and mao tao cow wrote 50 poems that very few people have ever heard of ,that are so full of wisdom that it has to be hidden away and revealed to very few people after 1400 years. as you australians might say...what a croc.
as far as the "golden rule" is concerned...i did not laude it loudly and i did not laude it as something new and extraordinary, i laude it as true. around here we have something called the K.I.S.S. principal---Keep It Simple Silly
also, could you enlighten us with the part of scripture that deals with "jesus the man and his nazarene party followers"? that sounds more like an australian rock band to me.

it would have been great if this had been the case. however, books as we know them did not exist for many centuries after jesus' time. the torah was written, but in very limited editions, even the king had to write his own copy. the method of spreading information was talking. besides, how many books do you need to get across the idea of love your god and love your neighbor? j2s

thanks narkissos,
i wasn't sure whether the definition that i had picked up along the way was the only one. because of the nature of the reference to vlad the impaler it has always been a kinda vivid word to me and i have never been really comfortable with the wtb&ts' use of it, maybe now i can relax about it.

one of the questions i've had about this subject is the use of the word impale. i believe the word has a specific definition and that it has nothing to do with nailing anything to anything...depending on my memory and something i read about vlad the impaler, the supposed real life dracula, when one was impaled they were placed on the sharp end of a stake in sitting position, the stake entered the obvious orifice and continued till you were dead, thus it was a true "torture stake". i have never seen this mentioned by anyone, although i can see why you wouldn't want to wear this image or have it hanging on your wall in black velvet, but i don't do these things anyway so maybe some people wouldn't mind at all. can someone, leolaia perhaps, please address this question---was jesus nailed, as scripture seems to say, or was he impaled in the manner i've suggested. or is it possible for nailed and impaled to have the same meaning? j2s

Do Individual JWs Pay For The Publications They Distribute?
by Joe Grundy inexcuse my ignorance, and i've read on boards about the us not selling/inviting contributions issue, but do individuals jws in effect pay for the publications they give out?
if so, is that only for their magazines or for hardback books as well?
how is this organised, please?.
