Dick Cheney involved in a shooting
by IP_SEC ini saw this in the news paper today.
busted a gut laughing.. reuters.. washington (reuters) - the white house was bombarded with questions on monday about why it failed to go public with news that vice president dick cheney shot a fellow quail hunter until the day after the accident.. the victim, harry whittington, 78, took pellets in his cheek, neck and chest when cheney fired his shotgun while aiming for a bird during a hunt in southern texas on saturday, and was in stable condition at a corpus christi hospital.. whittington was moved out of intensive care on monday afternoon but peter banko, administrator of christus spohn hospital, said he did not know when he would be discharged.. "his condition continues to be stable ... it's not critical, it's not serious.
he's in stable condition, doing extremely well," banko said.. the accident happened about 5:30 p.m. on a private ranch about 200 miles south of san antonio, where the vice president has hunted previously.

What is the big deal about Valentines Day?
by damselfly ini don't quite understand all the "hype" and the endless questions about what my s/o is going to do/get me for the "big day".
i think diamonds are ugly, i don't like gold, flowers die and if want chocolate i'll buy it myself thanks.
honestly what i want for valentines day is for him to start being financially responsible and pick up after himself.

Yay Babs! Welcome, and great sentiments. I remember the JWs always denegrating the holidays, like Thanksgiving and such by saying "we should be thankful all year, not just on that day". Christmas of course was the same sort of thing. People putting a hardship on themselves to buy presents, when they should be showing affection etc. all year. To me it was just a way to make us feel superior, and less left out of the loop. I am a holiday nut! now. Of course we love all year, and are thankful all year, but how nice to have a day where you can set aside some time, to really focus on each other. Family, honey, friends, (chicks in the bar Tet). And heck, how many occasions does a poor JW have for gift giving??

Right now, John Lescroart's "Guilt" I'm hooked on the Dismas Hardy character.
Read all of Dan Brown's stuff, and I really liked both "DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons". If you like that sort of literary thriller, try just about anything by Greg Iles. Best would be "Mortal Fear" and "Black Cross".
I got halfway through "Devil in the White City" and then I moved, and had to return it, I need to pick it up again.
One of my favorites, "The Professor and the Madman". It's about the writing of the Oxford English Dictionary, very interesting, almost reads like a novel.

Thank you Serendipity! I have been trying to do that, but ummmm I end up spending quite a bit....................
So, how about this. I am sick of current mainstream music. All genres. I mean I listen to it, but I just don't think we are in a good place musically right now. Anyone have any suggestions for good music? Any era, any genre?

Anybody still buy vinyl records?
by DanTheMan ini haven't had a turntable in years, and i'm starting to feel all romantic about getting one and restricting my new music purchases to vinyl exclusively.. some reasons why:.
longevity - cd's get to be pretty skippy after about 10 years, and after 15 or 20, they are pretty much useless.
a vinyl record can last 100 years if taken proper care of.

Ok, I was waaaaayyy behind the times as a youth. Go figure, I was raised in a cult!
Anyway, the first albums I ever bought, were Bee Gees "Children of the World" and Led Zeppelin IV.
Conflicted child, huh?

Well I hope you're happy now Dan. All I can think of is Cheech and Chong bits. And for the life of me I can't figure out how my mother allowed me to have any of them. She was obviously not policeing my album choices like she should have been.

I agree with those of you who have seen them live. I have seen them several times in the last 25 yrs, and they put on one hell of a show. As far as them being has beens and such, if I could ONLY be half as energetic in my 60s as they are, I would be thrilled. Also, I believe an artist of any kind who loves their art, doesn't just want to roll over and die and stop feeling the need to create because of another birthday. How rotten is that? Unfortunately the rock world and fans (and Hollywood), are not so kind to older artists.

Some French jazz or blues of the 40s and 50s I suppose, not sure about the time period there. Louis Armstrong stuff like "St James Infirmary" and Cab Calloways "Minnie the Moocher". That kind of smoke filled room stuff. Ack! Am I managing to put my feelings into words here?
