What One JW Belief Could You Never Totally Accept???

I couldn't accept the fact that most of my friends (non-JW's), who were great people, whould die at Armegeddon simply because they weren't JW's (or anyone good non-JW person for that matter).

One thing about 1914 I never understood. How they decided that that particular combination of numbers were really meant to go together. It always felt to me sort of random. Why would part of the equation be in the book of Daniel and the other part in Revelation? And why would God speak in code? How could they be sure they didn't miss a factor? I always felt like the whole thing was rather contrived. When I spoke to people I would concentrate on the signs of the last days, which seemed like it was more applicable.

So true. Let's not forget that the "year for a day" principle got grafted out of one of Peter's books. Apparently, Daniel was prophesing things ahead of God being able to make those prophesies possible .

Even if the book didn't already loose credibility for having talking snakes and donkeys, surely this tale should at the very least tell people that the bible shouldn't be taken too literally?

we have a guy who comes by every now and then selling homemade tamales....those wonderful little morsels of lard...beef, pork, chicken and bean & cheese...i got the beef...and scarfed down uuummmm 5 of them .

For those of you who don't know what Krispy Kreme is, it the crack-cocaine of the pastry world.

Agreed. Before eating my first Krispy Kreme doughnut, I always felt that doughnuts were overrated. Now I'm in a minor depression because the gas station near my school has stopped serving them (not like I can't get them at another location, though ). Yet another reason not to believe in a loving god .

Now I've got to go find a Mexiacn restaurant and taste a tamale, I suppose.

Hey Laura, I remember when you first started posting here. I'm glad to hear that you are doing better. While I haven't been disfellowshipped myself (I am inactive for the most part), I definitely concur that having the JW's out of your (or anyones) life is the best thing. Hopefully, things will continue to look up for you; like me you are young and you have a whole long lifetime of non-JW things to experience. Hope to read more from you here .

Coffee gives protection against diabetes?

my husband is half- finn.

his father (full-blood finn) drank coffee constantly, and smoked like a chimney and was an alcoholic.

he came down with type ii diabetes about 30 years back.

Yeah, I've heard about this study for a couple of weeks now. I'm a big coffee fan, but I don't drink more than 1 cup a day generally, though. Then again, my coffee of choice is Starbucks, so that explains it .

Remember Dateline??

i'm trying to get some comments that active jehovah's witnesses may have heard after dateline aired back on may 28, 2002.

do you remember any comments made about the dateline program either made from the platform at the kingdom hall, or in private conversations with other jw's?

how were the people who where on dateline viewed in your area, especially at the kingdom hall or by other jws?

There were several people in my hall who said they saw it (including a few Bethelites, and also my own mom). As you may imagine, they said it was either overblown or outright untrue, and that "apostates" most likely got a lot of the people in the episode to say what they said (that is, if the people weren't already outright apostates themselves). Some thought that NBC was being overly dramatic in some of the things; many thought that the video of the pedophile guy who was out in field service going door to door was over the top because: a) the Society would never allow a person who would hurt kids to be reinstated or out field service (), b) Even if the guy was pre-disposed to still doing such stuff, the setting (field service with all the holy spirit being there etc.), and the fact that the guy is in the open public (thus not having the opportunity to do anything anyway), made the danger that NBC was trying to put foward as being too dramatic. I even heard from one person that it was probable that some higher up at NBC was either closely related to an apostate or an apostate their self, and therefore had an anti-Witness agenda. If there were any Witnesses in my congregation who this did affect they didn't state so in public .

The phrase "buck up" has always meant to me something along the lines of "things will get better" or "continue despite the past discouragement" or something of the like trying to encourage someone who has faced dissapointment. I've never heard it being used in a negative way like it is down in Australia, so it's probably a cultural thing.

Actually RubaDub, the majority of Americans are against gay marriages (meaning many educated non- Southerners as well ) , but more people favour letting individual states decide whether or not they should allow gays to marry rather than endorse a constitutional amendment: http://www.ktvu.com/family/2837654/detail.html

So G W Bush may be possibly alienating some moderates who would have otherwise voted for him, while gambling that he'll more than make up for it by riling up his fundamentalist Christain base. Since I'd like to see Bush leave office next year, I hope this move backfires big time.

I love the way some backers of this amendment try to maintain that they'd like to curtail the rights of gays but still insist that they have "no problems" with gays.

I think I'll probably go to see it just to see what the big deal is about.

Gibson did say that he would try to be as faithful to the gospel story as possible, so don't go into the movie thinking that you are watching a history documentary; it's more of a dramatic art piece .

I totally disagree with this law.

Now I'm as secular as the next non-religious guy, but if a religious fundy-nut like Pat Robertson started complaining about this law being anti- religious bigotry, I'd have to agree with him. A religious head scarf/ turbun, etc. does not force anyone to observe the other persons religion or anything like that, it's no different than if some secular person preferred to wear red everyday for good luck. This is a big time encroachment on freedom of religion and speech; the kids aren't trying to convert anyone nor endanger anyone with these religious symbols, they are simply trying to express their own religious faith (or their parent's, depending on the situation).

Now I totally understand that France has been having some cultural clashes with its Muslim population (hell, which country doesn't? Let's just wait untill the US' Muslim population gets significant), but as some other posters have pointed out, this ban will not mitigate the situation in anyway. Hell, it will most likely make it worse. Find useful ways to deal with the situation instead of divisive ones like this. Poor Sheiks, Jews, etc. having to needlessly suffer.

Let freedom (of religion) ring.
