In praise of Randall Watters
by nicolaou inexjw's of a certain age will remember randy's site well.
freeminds was instrumental in waking me up along with ray franz's books.
if net soup and armageddon okies mean nothing to you you're probably under 30.. whatever caused randy to post what he did recently is something i can only guess at but it won't be what i remember him for.. randy, i wish you well and thank you for all you've done over the years .

I first starting reading this website because Randy would link topics from here on the homepage of his website. His website was important in me realizing the fraud the JW religion is. I was (and continue to be) impressed by his measured and reasonable writing style while addressing his audience. I think the old "Quotes" website may have been my first exposure, but Randy's website really helped me put a lot of that raw information into context.

Quality of newer membership
by Lostandfound inon a previous post mamacita29 pointed up the low quality of new jw converts.. is the quality falling even more as the society use lower than low meeting, talks, broadcasts etc.. when i was active initially the organisation and standards seemed totally different today.
i have seen hard working intelligent elders fall by death or exhaustion.
the younger generation that came along never really grasped responsibility hence shortage of good elders, never mind the watered down to almost nothing quality of meetings.

Having not attended meetings since the early 2000's, the religion today (from what I read here) is way different than what I experienced. The "lower quality" member thing was already starting back then, but it seems to be a much bigger issue now. Even though I found the literature unconvincing back then (towards the end of my time in there), having skimmed some of the newer stuff, that older literature might as well have been written by Harvard professors.
When I was in, one of my favorite books was Mankind's Search for God. I was always mad that it was never featured at the Book Study, but we would study the Greatest Man book for the thousandth time. Obviously, now I can read MSFG and see its many flaws and biases, but I remember reading it as a teen (through JW colored lenses of course), and actually feeling like I learned something and was reading something substantive. Now most of the stuff seems like it's written in the style of the "simplified English" edition of the magazines (do those still exist?).
But as someone mentioned up thread, this is all the religion's fault for promoting an anti-intellectual attitude generally and not addressing the religion's doctrinal short comings specifically. Hopefully we'll start seeing negative growth in the overall numbers very soon (it was already that way in first world countries minus the US even when I was still in).

"Overlapping Generations"... one year later...
by Alfred inwow, it's hard to believe it's already been about a year since this subject was covered in the wt study at kindgom halls around the globe... let's read it just one more time, so we don't forget just how ridiculous this sounded when we first read it.... watchtower (study edition), april 15th, 2010 issue, pages 27-29:.
"this magazine has long been used by the faithful and discreet slave as the primary channel for dispensing increased light.
... what does this explanation mean to us?

Is Your Favorite Kingdom Melody still in the New Songbook? Let's see

My favourite was 155. It's gone. (nice point about the song blondie ).
Not sure why they had to change the songbook, I thought they already got rid of all the songs that had "Christendom's influence" from older versions.
I did notice in watching the World Cup that the German national anthem had an eerie similarity to one of the songs in the newly defunct songbook (can't remember which song though). I guess Haydn wasn't considered a "bad influence".

I'm sure all the Bethelites were feeling uplifted after hearing that.
Like others have stated, you have to wonder what percentage of the story is actually true. I know if there were ever 6am meetings in the USA, attendance would be poor and unenthusiastic.

Antitypes / Greater fulfillments - Where does this concept come from? Is there a biblical basis for it?
by Psychotic Parrot ini've been discussing this recently with my dub family & would like some more information on the subject as i'm not all that well informed on it at present.
i'm not a believer in the divinity of the bible, but i do respect those who feel that bible helps them in their lives.
however, those who claim that certain ancient prophecies will have a greater / larger fulfillment in modern times puzzle me.

The concept comes from an overactive imagination.
