For myself; for the last 5 years, when I meet a new person I almost immediatly inform them that I was raised as a JW.... I've met at least 10 other ex-JW's, that I other wise wouldn't have known for the fact that they probablly would not have brought it up.... &, for everybody else it just clues them into why I say stupid things or why i did not see Star Wars when I was a kid.

Informal (anti) witnessing
by Mysterious inin my social psychology class today we were talking about cults.
the professor mentioned her neighbor was an ex-jw and the woman swears it's a cult but that she wasn't so sure if it was or not.
throughout her lecture i took down all the points on cults and described under it in detail why jws meet each one.

Film Scenes that got burnt onto your memory
by greendawn inwhat were some film scenes that pleased or horrified you so much that they stayed vivid in your memory for a long time?
the one i always recall is the scene where anthony hopkins (playing as hannibal lector) lobotomised ray liotta (paul krendler) cutting off pieces of his brain and giving them to him to eat.
he also took some of liotta's cooked brain in a plane and gave them to an unsuspecting passenger boy sitting next to him to eat.

Why does religion fail?

the site was called "the atheists manifesto", and i think i heard about it from someone on this board.

I believe that spirituallity is what is implemented on an individual basis.... religion is just a legalism combined with spirituality....

Do you think that "Armaggeddon"/Hellfire damnation" is just scare tactics?
by booker-t inmany people have come to believe that the churches, religions or the world today just use "punishment" as a form of scare tactic to get controll over people.
i am beginning to think maybe these people are right.
it is hard for me to believe that a "loving" god would destroy 6 billion people just to save a "few" people at armaggeddon.

by hallelujah inthe big to me is what about jehovah.
after years of calling out to jah, literally, i start to wonder whether jah really helps me or rather it's just a type of mantra.
i have started thinking that i have to look after myself.

Is there a God/supreme being/ or what?!
by DigitalFokus inok, so i was raised luthren, my dad was cathlioc and then i went dub for 5 years and since have been completely turned off religion.
the dub experience combined with world events and my personal ones have pretty much pushed all thoughts of a "almighty" out of my mind.
of course there are times that i think of religion or get into a "2am religion talk" and i wonder wtf is really going on.

Witnesses and child abuse
by MissBehave inthis is prompted by something i read in another thread about jw kids getting beat because they got caught with love letters.
the acceptance of physical punishment within this group is chilling.
"spare the rod, spoil the child" does not mean "beat your kid and leave bruises".

Yup, For Me it got to the point, where I would run outside to make a big scene... Eventually a neighbor would call the cops... When the cops got there and acted like there was nothing they could do, I would then proceed to do something (usually mooning the cops) to get arrested to avoid the ass whooping i would have gotten for the first "offense" + the one for getting the athorities involved...

this week a brother called me, with a stupid tax question that i know he had the answer to.
he had not seen me since last year at the memorial...and said...."are you fatter since i seen you?".

My Dad would always refer to unreceptive people as "Narrow Minded Fools"... I must say that in my late teens I decided that I didn't want to be a "narrow minded fool" for only knowing "Da Troof"....
