I spoke to my mother who lives in another state briefly last night and some things she expressed to me have me once again shocked and dismayed. I feel like I have to vent. (I’m now allowed to contact them since my father is in serious ill health). My parents are good people (life long JWs) but in my opinion, the many of JW policies that adherents must follow are divisive and destructive to families and violate basic human rights in the very worst and are rude in the very least. Ultra right wing conservatives say that gays pose the biggest threat to family values, but in my opinion the greatest threat are Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Apologies Danny, no offense I hope.
Just to clarify, although the news articles doesn't mention it, on the news broadcast, they showed the guys "church" ID card which identified him as a Bethelite. Also, Middletown, NY is near the WT farms.
Regards,

My thoughts go out to you. Your description of your meeting with the P.O. had me on pins and needles, you did well. From my perspective however, the most important and unfortunate aspect of the scenario is when your wife made it clear to you that the first man in her life is Jehovah (my mother recently expressed similar sentiments). I've found that once it becomes clear where our family stands (in this case your wife), we can then better grasp the situation and put ourselves back in control.
What I mean by this is that knowing where your wife stands and what she's capable of (for example ratting you out), you can learn how to manage the relationship. Unfortunately this will take alot of energy on your part and I don't see any other way of dealing with the situation other than in playing the part (you're still in control because you know what you have to do)...or I'm sad to say, eventually you may need to reassess your relationship.
Its excruciatingly infuriating but we are dealing with robotic clones and it takes some careful maneuvering.
Best to you,

This Past Sunday My Wife Took Me To The Elders!
by enlightenedcynic inearly sunday morning, around 1:30 a.m., my wife wakes me and says that she can't sleep and needs to talk with me.
i say ok and she proceeds to tell me that she wants a seperation.
i was hurt, but not shocked, because our relationship is not that close at this point after 14 yrs of marriage.

I'm so sorry to hear about what your wife has done. Your situation opens floodgates of emotions and anger for me, but you certainly don't need me to spout off. No doubt the situation is very emotionally complex for you. So much for "death do us part."
Hang in there and I hope your situation works out for the best.

This is a step in the right direction. However the press needs to understand how the religion destroys familes with their shunning practices and intolerance towards those who leave the religion (the article implied the religion destroyed families because of their beliefs regarding blood transfusions).
The Russian article reminds me of the JW documentary my mother forced me to watch when I visited last month regarding former Soviet Union Witnesses who were sent to Siberia. It mentioned 40 or so Witnesses who were sent to Siberia for practicing their religion while under ban. Some were released after a few years some were forced to stay for several years. While it was an interesting review of a very small segment of the Russian population that was sent to Siberia, I pointed out that hundreds of thousands of Russians were forced to live and work there becasue of their political beliefs. As usual, she and the documentary minimized any victims other than JWs.

Decline to add to their numbers
by NYCkid ini stopped going to memorials a few years ago, partly since it was such an inconvenience but partly because i don't want add to their numbers of attendees.
now, it's solely for the reason that i don't want to add to the numbers of attendees (plus the talk is always the same: why only 144,000 partake, what's the role of the great crowd, why [a fake passover] is the only religious commemoration true christians should be observing, what's the meaning of the bread and wine...blah blah blah) .
at least i closed that chapter with fond memories.

At least I closed that chapter with fond memories. The 2nd to the last time I went to the memorial was at the Jersey City assembly hall, when Prince flanked by his body guards walked in and sat down in the row in front of me. The last time I went I brought my partner.
This Sunday I'll be attending the very enjoyable and enlightening Easter services at my local Episcopalian church. I'm not an active member but I've gone there for Easter the past 5 years or so. I'm agnostic but it's a chance to commemorate the practical lessons of Jesus' life (I really like many of his parables) and to celebrate the renewal and rebirth associated with Spring.

1. When it became known that I was leaving my rural congregation for the city life, an elder told me that I shouldn't go around hugging sisters so much, especially when I move to a larger city congregation since it would be in appropriate especially since the brothers in the new congregation wouldn't know me right away...I was a flaming gay teenager.....helllloooo, I'm more butch now of course, but I always thought that was odd.
2. I was around 15 or so and an elder approached me before the meeting and asked me to welcome back so and so who just came in since he was going to be reinstated at that meeting. Of course I replied that I will wait until after the meeting and after the announcement of his reinstatement, but he kept pressing me to go welcome him back. So I followed Br. Elder's advice and started talking to him. Another Elder saw me talking to him, then came and pulled me into the back with my Elder Dad. I explained that the other Elder brother told me to go speak with him, that I hadn't felt comfortable doing it. I was counseled that I shouldn't do everything I'm told and should only follow Jehovah's arrangement. To this day I don't know if those 2 Elders were F******* with me but it was a bizarre mind trip. On the way home from that meeting, my Dad said I didn't do anything wrong, just to be careful with them and if anything comes up with them again, talk to him first.
