  Gilgamesh, thanks for sharing your experience.

  Your comments about the behavior and commentary of the Bethel breakfast "hosts" struck a nerve.

  I never met Ray. But the entire tone of Crisis of Conscience and In Search of Christian Freedom, and Amazing's recent post of Ray's comments, runs contrary to the general spirit I felt as I listened to and watched other GB members. For that I respect Ray.

  I also have never met Bill. But the purpose of SL is noble. And for that I respect Bill.

  imho, these issues should not be a personality contest or a fan club promotion. Take the bad with the good, and move on.

  But, since I've never met either man, I'm basically talking through a hole in my head.

  Crap,,,,,,, now I think I am addicted to cigs...

  i have been smoking off and on for over a year,,,,,,,never smoked before this year in my life.. it all started just for the hell of it.

  then as my hub and i started going out dancing and hitting the town, cig smoke was everywhere.

  i would comehome with it in my hair and all over my clothes.

  Good Lord, Dede, what in the world were you THINKING when you started smoking those pathetic excuses for a cig? LOL

  Me, Winston 100's, about 1/2 pack a day. Started when I was 25, quit when I was 27, started again at about 29, quit again 31, started again 38, quit again 40, started again 48. Seems like I go in 2-3 years phases...thinking about quitting again.

  When I quit, no withdrawals symptoms to speak of, other than a little restlessness.

  WAY WAY WAY easier to quit smoking than to leave the Borg.

  Hmmmm.....now I'm having second thoughts. My ring finger is deformed because of a construction accident, and I can't wear a wedding ring. Bikerchic and I have talked about a ring tattoo, but 1) I have very thin blood (years of anti-inflammatories), and 2) I'm a big wuss.

  Ideas?

  To the excellent advice of the other posters here, I might only add---even sharing your feelings with someone you trust, and under agreement of confidentiality, can lead to an "investigational committee." That's what happened to me. The CO and another elder came over to my house some months after I had decidedly reduced my activity level, and asked me if we could talk. I said sure, and at first the conversation was innocuous enough, but rather quickly veered into inquiring about my thoughts re: 1914 and the FDS. I hesitated and expressed my serious reservations about sharing what amounted, in my mind, to nothing more than my personal and private opinion. They pressed, and (in the case of the CO, I believe with all sincerity) requested that I share my thoughts.

  I EXPRESSLY told them that I wouldn't say a thing unless they both gave me their personal word of honor that whatever I said would be held in the strictest confidence. They both nodded and gave me their verbal assurances.

  Well, you can guess what happened, and I'm now df'd.

  When it comes to JWs, it saddens me to say: TRUST NO ONE.

  Is 1914 date flawed?

  reasoning from the scriptures says on pp95-97 that months consist of 30 days.. years therefore would be 360 days long.. i have calcaluted(sic)that for every year in the `western'calender such a 360 day calender would fall 4/5 days depending on whether it was a leapyear or not.

  now over a period of 2520 years,a 360 day calender would be 9,940 days behind a 364/5 day calender(25 years!

  ) therefore 2520 years according to book of daniel would fall in 1889!.

  Yesterday, as I was thinking about this issue, it suddenly dawned on me...

  THE ONLY TIME I EVER FELT HESITANT TO BE HONEST AND OPEN ABOUT MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS WAS WHEN I WAS IN THE ORG. There was always a price to pay.

  In my business dealings, "telling it like it is" never hurt me, and usually helped me. It was not always well received, but I never got fired for it. Actually, it usually enhanced my reputation...I was not just another "yes" man.

  In my personal dealings, sharing how I felt was only a problem with JWs. "Worldly" people respected me for it; and more often than not they reciprocated.

  Yet another piece of flotsam and jetsam from my being raised as a Witness.

  <<watching it float on down the river behind me...good riddance>>

  Does Our Arguing Scare People Off???

  with so much going on over here, do you think that newbies, lurkers, or potenial apostates could or do get scared off from this place?

  if someone is on the fence and they want to explore the internet and are warned that all you'll see are disgruntled apostates, could these forums make them think the "faithful and discreet slave" is actually right?

  UnDisfellowshipped: The way you juxtaposed "truth" and "honest" made me stop and think.

  Hayakawa comments that "the Old English and Latin words for true, are close synonyms that mean habitually telling or disposed to tell the truth...honest means not given to lying..." (emph added)

  So, then, perhaps a person can be honest, but not compulsively a truthsayer?
