Question about "good works" ??? ???

not ever having been a jw, i was curious to know something.... are witnesses ever encouraged to do good works for the less fortunate?

(giving to the poor, working in a soup kitchen, helping the elderly, other volunteer work, etc..).

i know scripture states you will know believers by their "fruit".

LittleToe: The practical help that we offered was usually to the elderly. We knew that they, having heard the good news of the kingdom for decades, were highly unlikely to become Witnesses. We helped them because they needed help. Yes, we wanted them to become JWs but if they were never to become Witnesses we would have STILL helped them.

You say that 'SOMETIMES ( JWs ) humanity shines through' and that there are 'SOME' lovely people who remain JWs.' My CONSISTENT experience of 22 years of association with JWs in 4 congregations, tells me that MOST JWs are lovely people, and that their humanity shines through MOST OF THE TIME.

GentlyFeral: I'm amazed at what you say. There was hardly a time in field service when we DIDN'T ask one or more householders ( who we suspected might need some practical help ) if they needed anything done for them. The example of Christ was presented to me at my pioneer school, and at the meetings, who gave people practical help as he went about his ministry. We followed that example. When I read the negative comments about JWs on this site, I find it extremely hard to reconcile them to my actual experience as a JW.

Kristofer: You're right in saying that most JWs are good people, sincerely trying to do what they think is right. I have to say though, that your remark that they are victims troubles me. I never regarded myself as a victim whilst I was a JW, and I certainly don't view myself as HAVING BEEN a victim. I had a happy life as a JW. I see many, many ways that being a JW benefited me. When I realised that the Bible is the work of man, I stopped being a JW. I have no complaints. No victimhood here.

Honesty: I feel that you DO need to say more. Your portrayal of JWs staggers me. I have no desire to ever go back to being any kind of religious believer, but I have to say that my long years of experience with JWs is COMPLETELY at odds with your representation of them. Throughout my time as a JW I was SURROUNDED with countless lovely Christian people. They genuinely loved God, Christ and their fellowman ( as I did too ).

JWs follow the Scriptural command at Galatians 6:10, which states: "Let us do good unto ALL men, ESPECIALLY unto them who are of the household of faith." So, whilst doing good to fellow Christians is the PRIORITY according to Paul in this verse, believers are not to RESTRICT their good works to fellow believers.

When I was a JW we would often 'do good' to non-believers as we went about our preaching work ( which we regarded as the ultimate way of doing good to our neighbours ), We used to ask the householders if they needed any practical help such as shopping or the collection of a prescription, etc. As they knew JWs to be honest people they were quite happy to let us help them. I remember being presented with a long shopping list by one old lady, which I took to the shops and bought the things on her list. Many experiences like this can recounted by JWs.

RevFrank: If the WTS does misrepresent the writers that they quote, maybe they're following the example set by the gospel writer Matthew, who BLATANTLY misrepresents the OT writers that he quotes in trying to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. Compare Matt 2:15 with Hosea 11:1, and Matthew 2:18 with Jeremiah 31:15. If Jesus really was the Messiah why did Matthew have to resort to such obvious 'spin'? Are you going to criticise Matthew just as severely as you criticise the WTS?

RevFrank: You bemoan that you weren't given an answer to the question of whether Christ is Jehovah. You quote Gen 19:24, which tells of god INCINERATING the people of Sodom with FIRE and SULPHUR. Maybe a more pressing question might be: Is Christ just as psycopathic as Jehovah?
