A Paduan: So, when I, "TASTE" my dinner this evening, will I be doing something different to when I, 'tasted OF' my breakfast this morning? If so, what is the difference?

by scout575 in"and he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, ephphatha, that is, be opened.
and straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plain.

Lovelylil: Please know that I mean NO disrespect to Bible-believing Christians in making these weekly posts. I don't mean to make them look stupid or to tear them down. I'm making these weekly posts in the ( slim ) hope that I may, 'sow a seed' in the mind of some JW 'lurkers', which may eventually lead to their viewing the Bible as the work of man, rather than their viewing it as the infallible 'word of God'. I sincerely wish that someone had done the same thing for me years ago.
Just as you share your view of the Bible with people in the belief that doing so is in their best interests, so do I. Just as your doing so is done with no intention of making them look stupid or tear them down, neither is mine. I certainly WOULD NOT tell you to 'mind your own business' if you were to try to disprove the claims of atheists. On the contrary, I would welcome it.
It may come as some comfort to you to know that when I have exhausted the 'iffy' texts from the New Testamant, I have no intention of starting on the even, 'iffier' texts from the Old Testament. If I were to do so, I suspect that the, 'Son of man would have come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory' ( Matthew 24:30b ), before I ever completed the task.

Sad emo: I fear that you may be taking a too literalistic view of the title of this weekly thread. Maybe a more liberal view is in order?
I was reading a miracle story from the Koran the other day. As the Koran is an ancient religious text that is viewed by millions upon millions of sincere Muslims the world over, as God's infallible word, should I view this miracle story in the Koran as historically true, or as mythical?

"And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and HE SPIT, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, ephphatha, that is, be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plain." ( Mark 7:33-35 )
"And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had SPIT ON HIS EYES, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly." ( Mark 8:23-25 )
"And when he had thus spoken, HE SPAT ON THE GROUND, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the man with the clay, and said unto him, go wash in the pool of Siloam ( which is by interpretation, sent ). He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing." ( John 9:6,7 )

A Paduan: That verse ( Lev 24:16 ), comes straight after the account of the man who had committed the crime of blasphemy. His punishment is recorded in verse 14, which says: "Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him LAY THEIR HANDS UPON his head, and let all the congregation STONE HIM." After having stoned this man, would those Israelites have interpreted verse 16, in anything other than a literal way? Does the literal stoning of verse 14, become 'spiritual' stoning in verse 16?

A Paduan: Hebrews 2:9 says: "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the SUFFERING OF DEATH, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should TASTE DEATH for every man." Here, 'TASTING DEATH' is equated with, "SUFFERING DEATH". At Matthew 16:28, does 'TASTING of DEATH', mean something else? If so, what?

A Paduan: I am merely pointing out what the text actually says. If Leviticus 24:16 says: "And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall SURELY BE PUT TO DEATH, and all the congregation shall certainly STONE HIM ", how can that be understood in any other way but literally?

A Paduan: If the British queen wanted to visit Australia, and announced her intention to visit by saying something along the lines of: "Verily I say unto you, there be SOME standing here, which shall NOT TASTE OF DEATH, till they see the British queen visiting Australia", would people be expecting her visit to be in a MERE year's time ( the approx time between Matthew 16:28 and Jesus' alleged post-resurrection appearances )? Clearly, in just ONE YEAR after her announcement, MOST and posssibly ALL of those having heard her announcement would still be alive. but she said that only "SOME" of her listeners would still be alive when she visits Australia. Clearly, she anticipates making the visit in more than just ONE YEAR'S time. -

Sad emo: Under the Mosaic law, capital punishment WAS NOT restricted to blasphemy/apostasy/idolatry. Notice the following texts:
"And they shall say to unto the elders of his city, this our son is STUBBORN, he will not obey our voice, he is a GLUTTON, and a DRUNKARD. And all the men of his city shall STONE HIM WITH STONES, that he DIE: so shalt thou put evil away from you; and all Israel shall hear and fear. And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be PUT TO DEATH, and thou shall hang him on a tree." ( Deuteronomy 21:20-22 )
"A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a WIZARD, shall surely be PUT TO DEATH: they shall STONE THEM WITH STONES: their blood shall be upon them." ( Lev 20:27 )
"Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die, he that smote him shall surely be PUT TO DEATH; for he is a MURDERER: the revenger of blood shall SLAY the murderer, when he meeteth him." ( Numbers 35:21 )
Here we find that the death penalty was prescribed for gluttons and drunkards, wizards, and murderers. Notice that in each case that being 'put to death' DOES NOT mean being 'put outside the camp', but means execution, either by 'slaying' or 'stoning'.

Shining One: Was Matthew 24:30 fulfilled by 70 AD ? This would be part of the, 'all things that would be fulfilled' before Jesus' listeners would die off ( verse 34 ).
