"And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and HE SPIT, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, ephphatha, that is, be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plain." ( Mark 7:33-35 )

"And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had SPIT ON HIS EYES, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly." ( Mark 8:23-25 )

"And when he had thus spoken, HE SPAT ON THE GROUND, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the man with the clay, and said unto him, go wash in the pool of Siloam ( which is by interpretation, sent ). He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing." ( John 9:6,7 )

    Myths.

    Prove it!!

Seriously though. On what basis do you say they are myths?

    - Because of the way he did these healings (you appear to concentrate on the spitting ones)? This manner of 'visual aid' was done by Jesus' contemporaries also. I believe these are well documented within the Jewish traditions. It wasn't the spit and mud that did the healing, it was the 'power' of the healer.

    - The healings themselves? We can't prove beyond doubt whether they literally happened or not. That's where the faith bit comes in.

    - or the combination of both?

We do hear these healing stories in Church quite regularly, so maybe a bad choice this week, Scout! Not so much teaching about physical healing but spiritual. Those who were deaf and blind to the message of the Spirit 'hear' and 'see' it, and their fear of proclaiming the Good News is removed. At the same time however, we don't discount the possibility of such physical miracles.

The written word kills but the Spirit brings life...

Here's a thread that discussed these passages: spit

    That was fascinating peacefulpete.

I never thought about the digestive aspect of spit in relation to these healings before.

Would it be taking too wild a guess to suggest that Jesus' saliva somehow dissolved some blockage in the deaf man's ears and the blind men's eyes. Making mud having a 'drawing' effect maybe.

Elsewhere - if my brain's dissolving what do I do to stop it

Perhaps that was the quasi-medical rational behind the story. What it reveals to Bible literalists however is that at some early level the Jesus stories drew from the larger body of magical/medical legends and theories.

I don't understand all these posts here that try to make believers seem like they are stupid for believing what the bible says and are always trying to disprove the bible.

Why do some people even care what/why people believe what they do?

I mean, do those of you who try to disprove Christianity also go around trying to disprove Judaism, Hinduism, the Muslim faith and all the others?

I think most of the believers on this forum have been very kind and respectful to the unbelivers who keep bringing up the same issues in their posts which basically are meant to disprove or tear down, or make someone look stupid. The believers are only using the bible when it comes up in a discussion in a post, like if someone asks a bible question. But I have not noticed any of them going out of their way using their posts to disprove all the atheists.

If I was to go around trying to prove all the time that Athiests were wrong with their logic, wouldn't they just tell me to mind my own buiness, or ask what business is it of mine? Sounds like good advice doesn't it?

Faith in God or not believing in a God are both personal decisions for each to decide for themselves. And I can't understand why we feel we have a right to question someones beliefs all the time. What is the reason? Are we going to treat a human being different for believing other than what we personally believe? I should hope not. so why does it even matter?

I mean really, get a another hobby!

...and this my friends is where the act called.." a wet willie" came from.

The pagan later corrupted this act of the lord by changin stuff around. They later just put their finger in their mouth and got spit all over it....then stuck that wet finger in some dudes ear and laughed like a bastard.

    "And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and HE SPIT, and touched his tongue;

I wonder why he didn't save all that trouble and just "touch" the man.....or just say "your sins are forgiven"...like he did in other examples of his miracles? He prolly thought this was more impressive or sumthin.
